CAREER ADVANCEMENT OF WOMEN IN THE INDUSTRIAL SECTOR (A CASE STUDY OF 7UP BOTTLING COMPANY ENUGU)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

          The lack of full- scale involvement of women in industrial activities of this country prior to this time made it impossible to know their roles and contributions to the growth and development of this country.

          Involvement of women in the industrial sector helps to liberate them from full-time dependence on the male for their daily needs. In the past very few women were involved in industries as they were left to the traditional roles of domestic and child bearing.

          The Aba women riot of 1929 helped to expose women to participate in social activities which emphasized that they have moved from traditional way of life to modern way of life. But before now women were said to be relevant only in procreation, cooking and overall family management and were not to be involved in economic, social, political and industrial activities.

          They were poorly regarded in the society and as such were denied most of their human rights. During industrial revolution much was not known of women, it was later that it became clear that women could participate in the formation of the industry and also be managers of any industry as well.

1.1     BRIEF HISTORY OF 7UP BOTTLING COMPANY.

7UP bottling company was firstly established in Nigeria in 1St October 1960 by a Lebaneese. The company was situated at Ijora in Lagos state where it was producing only four crates of drinks per day.

Women there were only cleaners, messengers and clerical staff. This has increased to ten production plants or companies throughout the federation.

7UP 9TH mile corner Enugu was established on 7th march 2003 and was commissioned by the managing director himself Mr Faysal El-khalil who took over management from his father that commissioned the Lagos one who was late as of then.

They now have women at different levels in management and administration of the company working and advancing in the production of new products.

  • STATEMENT OF PROBLEM.

Since the collapse of the traditional rural economy which was as a result of industrial revolution, the traditional roles of women have drastically changed from that of home makers, bearers of children and domestic servants to industrial work. It also suggests that the development of our country could be achieved quicker by the women working in the industry and also keeping them in the higher position in the industry. In the same vein, the duty of women in the industrial sector is very essential.

This research work is therefore geared towards investigating why women in industries especially women working at 7up bottling company Enugu were restricted from being promoted and to what extent their being workers in this industry helped to free them from these restriction.

August Comte (1848) the Apostle of positivism justified the process of domestication of women by the supposed need for men to assure women’s emotional destiny, making their lives more and more domestic and above all detering them from all outside work. The idea that women should not be part of the modern economy and the general belief that women’s place is exclusively in the home, have generated world wide agitation especially from the women.

Accordingly women all over the world are encouraged to wax stronger and disentangle themselves from all socio-cultural, economic or political forces that have tended to delay their emergence into full participation at all levels of activities.

This has aroused the consciousness of women into agitating for liberation. While this is going on many other women are consciously or unconsciously planning on how to indulge in one industrial activity or another.

Industrialization, modernization and urbanization in any country affect the lives of its inhabitants including women. The effect and consequences of women in the industry especially in Enugu zone is geared towards progress.

1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

From the problem stated above, the objectives of this study are as

follows:

  1. To determine the contribution of women to the growth and development of Enugu 7UP bottling company.
  2. To know their experiences in the performance of their duty.
  3. To know the proportion of the women being promoted from junior staff position to management staff position since they joined the industry.
  4. To offer policy recommendation that will encourage more women involvement in industries.
    • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

As my interest in career advancement of women in industrial

Sector increases, it became very obvious that many reasons and problems are militating against the aspirations of women involvement in the industry.

          This research work attempts to make contributions in sociology based on the career advancement of women in the industrial sector which geared to know the roles which women in the industrial sector performed. Secondly the proportion of women promoted since they joined the industry and thirdly compare the women with their male counterparts in the industry similarly promoted.

    • SCOPE OF STUDY

The research work is the study of career advancement of women in the industrial sector using 7UP bottling company Enugu as a case study.

          The study tries to look at the population of women working in the industry and also seeks to determine the percentage of the population of women workers in the company that occupy different cadre. It also look at the population of women in the administrative and managerial level and the performance of the women who have attained high ranks as against their male counterparts.

1.7 STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESES

          This study is guided by the following hypotheses.

  1. The degree of stability in an organisation depends on the level of interaction between management and workers.
  2. Management policies as they affect women guaranty them effective job performance.
  3. The contributions of women in the industry depends on the level of opportunities given to them.
  4. The position women occupy determines their performance.
  • DEFINITION OF CONCEPTS.

Considering the importance of this topic as regards the scope. It is important to dwell on adequate clarity to enable easy understanding of the entire work and its dimension. Therefore, certain terms used in this paper shall be given definitions.

WOMEN: An adult female human beings getting out of men to be a helpmate.

INDUSTRY: The section of an economy concerned with manufacturing a specific type of manufacturing.

CAREER ADVANCEMENT: career advancement is defined as the movement of men and women from junior staff to management staff positions.
