ABSTRACT

This study examined the effect of broken homes on the academic performance of secondary school students in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. A descriptive survey design was used for the study. Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The population of this study was made of 120 teachers of which 120 teachers were sampled using simple random sampling techniques. Data for the study was collected using a self-designed instrument. Instrument was face and content validated by 3 experts.

A Test-retest method of reliability was used and the reliability, coefficient yielded 0.67. The data collected were analyzed using statistical mean. The result of the study showed that, broken homes influence pupils’ academic performance. The casual factors of broken homes are poverty, childlessness divorce terminal ill health and difference in religious believes, broken home contributes to juvenile  delinquency and the in disciplinary problems exhibited by children from broken homes are fighting, stealing, truancy, drug abuse etc.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

The family which is the bedrock of the society is made up of a man (father), his wife or wives and their children, who collectively make up a home (family). In the modern society, most families are faced with stress, pressure and misunderstanding that tend to break homes. Karl Zunsimester (2005:1) said “there is a mountain of scientific evidence showing that when families disintegrate children often end up with intellectual physical and emotional sear that persist for life”.

Broken homes have brought a lot of problem on the society and the country as a whole. The tradeding of the issue as that the children bear the negative effect. Moreover, Karl Sunsmester (2005:1) opines that a broken come affects the physical, emotional and academic life of the child affected. He argues that students from broken come find things very difficult most especially their educational pursuit and these variably affects theirs performance in school.

Each parent has individual roles to play in the life and up bringing of his children of wards and failure on them causes problems in the psychological development of the child. In a case where the responsibility of bringing up a child is left in the hands of a single parent the essence of the other half will be borne  on the character development of the child.

This is because the home as the primary social institution of the child need to be stable for health and balanced development of the child or student who needs a proper state of mind to count to his/her academics. Adeyemo (2006) observed  that the home fails to provide the child with proper place in the society for future career, then the child’s future is in dismay. There are also convincing face and evidence from single parents constitute problem to the school administrator. They are also mostly not disciplined.

Bachelors (2007) affirms that that discipline  of a child needs co-operation of the complimentary role of two parents, but in broken comes, where one bears that responsibilities of that family alone, discipline is lacking which heaves the child in annuity which manifest in the other forces of lies daily life. Discipline can be instilled in a child in school but when lacking gets to a single parent home, maintaining it will be difficult  suite no man can confidently do two men job at the same time.

Little wonder Lace (2005) principal of the resurrection school in Harken states that one don’t believe that he can educate a child without the co-operation of the parents. The come is faced with the task of instating in the child developmentally, spiritually, socially and otherwise. Apart from being a model the come offers that first education (informal education), a firm for expression Ogundele (2002) writing on the west Africa formal education sees the home whether extended or nuclear as one of the most effective agencies of socialization he stated that: socialization is the process by which a child is trained to control and channel his basic needs action and expectations in order to become a full member of the society.

Against this background the researcher intends to investigate extensively towards identifying the effects of broken homes in the academic performance of student in secondary schools in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Statement of the Problem

“A sound mind is a sound body” and vice versa. Children from broken homes are left at the merely of their relations. Sometimes they are often denied the  privilege  of going to school on time because their task master always insist that all the domestic jobs must be finished before they can think of going to school. And they go to school; they go late looking Worn out, and very unhappy. Given the above situation, it becomes difficult and impossible for the student to understand anything in the class. How does this condition affect the academic performance of students from broken homes?

A fly that does not have an adviser follows the corpse to the grave. A twelve-year-old boy who was caught stealing said during interrogation of watched videos and forms and I saw people doing it, I thought it was firm, I tried it and they caught me”. The statement of this child shows that he lacks moral home training and guidance. Is this condition true of student from broken homes?

The researcher is also interested in finding the effect of broken home on the dropout syndrome.
