PROJECT TOPIC- AN EVALUATION OF STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN ECONOMICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION IN ABAKALIK LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF EBONYI STATE

Abstract

The research into the evaluation of students performance in economics senior secondary school certificate Examination in Abakaliki Local government area was done to ascertain the cause of the success or failure of students in Economics senior secondary school in the local government. In carrying out the research, four question were formulated and validated by the supervisor. During the research work, a sample of nine secondary schools were randomly drawn from the secondary schools in Abakaliki local government area, 20 students were used from each of the schools hence going a total of 180 respondents. The data collected were analyzed which revealed that 1. The causes of poor performance of students in economics are, poor motivation, hawking after school, poor knowledge of improvisation and late payment of school fees. 2. Inadequate provision of equipment in school contribute to students poor performance. 3. Quilting of teachers affect students performance. 4. Provision of education facilities, instilling through seminar, workshop can reduce this problem. Based on this, the researcher recommended that school administrator should employ only qualified teachers mostly those that have the knowledge of improvisation. Parent should care for their children very well and the government equip the school with educational materials.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1: BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

It is known that Education is a patent force, which could be utilized for the solution of social problems and for the fullest realization of the potentialities and aspiration of the  nation. It is the back bone of a nation’s development. Every citizen needs education to develop mentally, physically, socially and psychologically. Thus for a nation to be healthy, Education of the citizens is meutable.

O’ Coeson (1979) asserts that education is a social mechanism designed to bring about a person certain skills and attributes, that are judged to be useful and desirable in human resources which has been discovered as a factor of both social and economic development in all societies. However, it involves the process of importing knowledge, skills values and attitudes.

It is not just about value formation value orientation and regeneration. Education put in a nutshell, is the bedrock or the driving force of every country social economics goods and development. Economics which forms the nucleus of the study is one of the subject in the secondary schools curriculum. Its importance to man and his environment is enormous.

A study of economic is necessary since it is primarily concerned with the use of scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants knowledge of economic help the individual to build up a body of economy principles and equips him with the tools of economic analysis which will enable him to understand current issues and problem comporting society.

More so the study of economic helps the individual to contribute his quota to words increasing the will being of society. Secondary school level is the foundation ground especially for students who will like to further the study of economics in the tertiary institutions. However, the performance of students in economics has been very how in the recent times.

Secondary schools in Abakaliki local government area of Ebonyi State are not an exception. Economics as an academic discipline can be traced to the publication of a book. A unquing in to the Nature and causes of the wealth of Nations by Adam Smith in 1776. Adam Smith was not the first to discuss economics.

Greek and Roman philosophers like plate and Aristotle discussed economies under philosophy, moral laws, ethics and religion. However the most wide acceptable definition of economics was propounded by Robbins (1932) He defined economics the science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between end and scarce means which have attentive uses.

Robbins by this definition emphasized that economics is a science and that economics analysis should be based on. Scientific and logical processes rather than value judgement. Human needs and wants are unlimited but the resources to satisfy them are limited in supply. Hence, the study of economics is very important.

The recent decline in the performance of students in economics especially in eternal exams like WAEC, NECO etc is corrosive. As a matter of fact, a lot of problems had retarded economics teachers and student performance in the society. Among there problems are the quality of the teachers, the unconducive school environment, include facilities/equipment and the quality of personal.

Quality of teachers in Nigeria as an under developed nation burdened education which will help to enhance development thereby encourage production so as to ensure a viable economy. To achieve this, there is the need to employ qualified teachers in our school system. Environment matter a lot in terms of academic excellence.

Students will perform better in a conducive environment as this will offer them an ample opportunity to study in a cool and well structured environment. Facilities/equipment is of students facilities like adequate libraries, well ventilated staff room and classrooms etc. These aforementioned factor would be detailed in the course of this work.

This project is aimed to review how some of these variables and concepts are necessary in our educational system such as the competency of the teacher, their experience attitude to teaching negatively or positively affected the students performance in school. hence the an evaluation of economics teachers and students performance in secondary school in Abakaliki local government are becoming inevitable.

1.2: STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

In recent times student have performed below expectation in external examination especially in economics subject. The performance of the secondary school student have been very low in Abakaliki local government of Ebonyi state. This is not a welcome development as this by extension does not add to the development of the country. Hence an evaluation of economics is necessary, therefore, the researcher set out to evaluate students and teachers performance in economics with the hope of suggestion possible remedy to move the study further.

1.3: PURPSOE OF STUDY

The purpose of this research is designed to evaluate the economics teachers and students performance in senior school certificate examination in Abakaliki local government area of Ebonyi state. Specifically the study tends.

  1. To Determine the causes of low performance of students in senior school certificate examinations.
  2. To determine the extent to which qualified teacher affect student in economics.
  3. To find out the extent to which inadequate equipment/facilities contributed to student poor performance.
  4. To proffer considerable solutions to the problems.

1.4: SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researcher has a lot of relevance to the entire business of education and to different group of people in the society.

  1. It will add to the already existing literatures.
  2. Government school administration the study very important in solving economics problems.
  3. The research will expose the need for motivation/inactive on teachers.
  4. It will also educate teachers on the effects of poor teaching.
  5. The study will help to broad on students view on the concept of economics
  6. The knowledge forms the study will generate intenerate for further research on related issues.

1.5: SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study borders on the evaluation of economics teachers and students performance in school certificate economics in Abakaliki local government of Ebonyi State. Geographically the study covers some selected secondary schools in Abakaliki local government of Ebonyi State.

1.6: RESEARCH QUESTION

          For the purpose of this study the following research questions would be answered.

  1. What are the causes of low performance of students in senior certificate economics
  2. To what extent does qualified teacher affects students performance
  3. To what extent does lack of equipment/facilities contributed to students
  4. What possible remedies could be appropriate in curbing this problem.
