FACTORS AFFECTING INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) USE IN TEACHING ECONOMICS IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN IJERO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EKITI STATE

                                                                        INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Information and communication technology (ICT) include all automated means of teaching with the aid of computers and web- related resources. The age of automation and technology has added a vast array of instructional materials and media to convention of Education. The integration of ICTs into teaching of Economics in secondary schools has been the subject of a good deal debate in Nigeria.

It is unfortunate that here in Nigeria, most teachers at ail sectors of education have minimal or ICT skills and hardly use existing opportunities to develop them.

According to Nweke (1989) “teaching is a strategy which guides students to secure certain amount of qualities and experience that promotes maximum counseling development.

Simkins (1999) viewed ICT as a medium through which students can observe the real life implications of Economics theories. The introduction and involvement of ICT in Education, especially n reaching of economics in secondary schools has facilitated the performance of students and teachers tocontrol, manipulated and contribute information 10 teaching and learning environment as interactive books, journals and linke are usually made available on the internet.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have been viewed as the backbone of knowledge of Economics and in recent years it have been recognized as an effective tool that has affected both teachers and students action.

Information and communication technology lias enhanced the performance of teachers in terms of subject materials delivery and provided, maximum attention The use of ICT has enhanced the teaching of Economic and equally enhanced teacher’s commitment to the teaching profession. It has helped teachers to tit into the social life of the community and society as a whole to students as they could need through e-mail feedback facilities.

A lot of factors have been found to confront teachers while trying to use Information and Communication Technology (IC) to teach Economics in senior secondary schools, these factors include lack of u k s to buy equipment lack of funds to hire personnel trained to use ICT and he rancharlant or unconcerned attitude of teachers, poor or non existence of internet connectivity as well as poor and unsteady power supply.

These factors might be social or technological the factors said to be social when it emanates from the teachers’ inability to interact effectively with student while trying to put across the knowledge to the subject matter to them while it is technological when it arises from the teachers’ inability to make use of devices specifically designed to be used in such areas to put across knowledge of the subject matter to the students.

The disparity in access to internet and ICT in general is occasioned by many diverse factors which include how to access internet, lack of funds to embark on full scale computerization irregular power supply, inadequate functional telephone lines and other infrastructure facilities needed to support the efficient and effective introduction and development of the technology.

Nigeria is also short of manpower for effective utilization of software and for maintenance of qualified programmers, engineers and technicians.According to Yusufu (2005), the potential tool for addressing the factors affecting teaching and learning has been neglected. At t lis end, government tries to restructure, redevelop and reinforce Nigeria Education policy to integrate ICT in Nigeria educational system.

Statement of the Problem

In a complex society like Nigeria, many factors affecting ICT use in learning Economics in Secondary Schools, the factors affecting ICT use in teaching economics include lack of funds to buy equipment, lack of funds to hire personnel trained to use ICT and the unconcerned attitude of teachers when it comes to embracing modern computer methods of teaching, poor or non existence of internet connectivity as well as poor and unsteady power supply, compounding ail of this is the fact that most teachers in Nigeria do not have the experience and competence needed to adequately use computers tor educational purpose.

The knowledge and use of computers is a necessity for all teachers if Nigeria is to be relevant in this modern computer driven age. The main problem of this study is to find out factors affecting ICT use in teaching economics in Senior Secondary Schools in Ijero local government area of Ekiti State.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to find out factors affecting ICT use in teaching economics in senior secondary schools.

Specifically the researchers’ work intends to find out the following;

  • To determine the level of teachers’ interest in ICT in senior secondary schools in fjero local government area of Ekiti State.
  • The ICT materials that is available in the schools to aid the teaching and learning of economics.
  • To find out if teachers are trained to properly teach economics through Information and communication technology (ICT).
  • To ascertain the level of exposure of the students to ICT materials and their usefulness in learning economics.

Significance of the Study

This research work looks at the factors affecting the use of Information and Communication Technology ICT in teaching economics. Findings of the study will be significant on several levels.

Firstly, it will help education policy planners and school administrators at various tiers of government to evaluate existing policies on ICTs teaching economics in secondary schools with the aim of amending these policies to meet present demands,

Secondly, findings of the study will be significant to teachers as they will benefit in terms of a new knowledge and appreciate on of the advantages of using

ICT to make the teaching of economics in secondary schools easier and more effective.

Lastly, students will benefit from the finding of the study as they will fully understand the automated means of knowledge acquisition.

Scope of the Study

This research work is limited to five selected schools in Ijero local government Area of Ekiti State. The students in SSI were also given questionnaire so as to elicit information on the factors affecting ICT use in teaching of Economics in Senior Secondary schools specifically covering ijero local government area of Ekiti State.

  1. What is the level of teacher interest in Information and Communication Technology in senior secondary schools in Ijero local Government Area of Ekiti State?
  2. What ICT materials are available in schools to aid the teaching and learning of t Economics in Senior Secondary Schools in Ijero local government area of Ekiti State?
  1. To what extent are teachers trained to properly teach Economics through Information and Communication Technology (1C T )
  2. What is the extent exposure of students to ICT materials and its usefulness in the learning of Economics?
