CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

       Education is the greatest tool for the development of any nation. The major objective of sending our children to school is to help them learn some basic concepts, skills, knowledge and beliefs necessary for the development of some specific goals. Observations have shown that in even level of schooling, whether at the primary, secondary or tertiary level of education, there are basic facilities which make it possible for the school to attain her desired goals. School facilities can also be referred to as school plant.

       According to Costaldi (1977), school facilities are those materials of education which enables a skillful teacher to achieve a level of instructional effectiveness that exceeds what is possible, when they are not provided. The materials of education or educational facilities are numerous whatever materials or services that help to facilitate teaching and learning fall under the term school facilities. They consist of land, buildings, play ground school farm, laboratories, libraries, assembly halls, workshops, classrooms, audio visual aids (radio sets audio cassette/tape recorders, television sets, video sets, tapes) slide projectors and slides flip charts etc, graphics (charts posters, pictures) photographs, cartoons, graphs, maps etc). Display materials (chalkboard, flannel boards, magnetic board) and many others.

       According to national policy on education (2004), it listed the following as part of national education goals.

v    The training of the mind in the under standing of the world around.

v    The acquisition of mental, physical and social abilities and competences as an equipment for the individual to live in and contribute to the development of his society.

The above stated educational goals no doubt suggest that the school plant is an important means through which these goals could be achieved. School facilities are necessary in the school for effective teaching and learning operations. The availability or unavailability of school facilities, insufficiency and bad condition of the available ones influences the achievement of secondary school student’s performance in both internal and external examinations. It also influences teachers instructional effectiveness and their ability to implement continuous assessment. Available researchers have shown that the school heads or administrations on the other hand encounter some difficulties in the general administration of the school due to lack of school facilities and bad condition of the available ones, hence the need to investigate the impact of school facilities on teaching and learning in secondary schools.

Statement of the Problem

       Investigations have revealed that there is poor performance of secondary school students in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in both internal and external examinations. This may be as a result of inadequate school facilities. Teachers find it difficult to carryout effective instruction in schools. They also encounter difficulties in the implementation of continuous assessment and this also may be linked to problem of school facilities. The administrators on their own side encounter a lot of difficulties in the administration of the school due to lack of school facilities and poor condition of the available ones. A school with poorly planned environment will find it difficult to achieve the educational objectives.

       This study is therefore faced with the problem of exploring the influence of school facilities on the academic achievement of students in secondary schools facilities on the academic achievement of students in secondary schools in Ikow Local Government Area.

Purpose of the Study

       The purpose of this study was to find out the influence of school facilities on the academic achievement of secondary school students in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Specifically, the study investigates the following;

  1. The influence of school facilities on the performances of students in examinations.
  2. The influence of school facilities on the teachers’ instructional effectiveness.
  3. The influence of school facilities on the teachers ability to implement continuous assessment.
  4. The influence of school facilities on the general administration of the school.

Significance of the Study

       This study is significant since it is aimed at improving teaching and learning, and also improving the performances of the students in both internal and external examination. Teachers who carryout instructions will find it easier and more interesting with the aid of school facilities.

The school administrators will effectively carry-out the general administration of the school.

In addition, it is hoped that recommendations from this study will be useful to the entire society; also students will be properly instructed thereby making them efficient and useful to the study.

Finally the study will be useful to younger researchers who may wish to use it as a reference material.

Scope of the Study

  The study is limited to impact of school facilities on teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ikwo Local Government area of Ebonyi State. In terms of scope and content, the study covers the influence of school facilities on the performance of students in examinations. The influence of school facilities on the teacher, instructional effectiveness, the influence of school facilities on teachers ability to implement continuous assessment, and the influence of school facilities on the general administration of the school. Principals, Teachers and students in government owned secondary schools in the area were use for the study.

 Research Questions

    The following research question guided the study;

  1. How does school facilities influence the performance of the students in examination?
  2. How does school facilities influence the teacher’s instructional effectiveness in school?
  3. How does school facilities influence teachers ability to implement continuous assessment?
  4. How does school facilities influence the general administration of the school by the school heads?
