A PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF HAPPINESS AND ITS MORAL IMPLICATIONS

PROJECT TOPIC- A PHILOSOPHICAL ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF HAPPINESS AND ITS MORAL IMPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT

The concept “happiness” is very common and attractive yet it is enigmatic and elusive.  Everybody seek for happiness but ask someone to define happiness and the person will be confused.  This research is a philosophical attempt to explore the concept of happiness in order to generate insights as regards the meaning, nature and source of happiness.  The research maintains that morality is the source of real happiness though it is separate from it.  For a vicious man cannot attain happiness. Apart from this, the research makes a distinction between pleasure and happiness.  This research opines that happiness is intrinsic end, and not an extrinsic end. Thus, happiness is good itself and for one to acquire it, one ought to be moral.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background Of The Study

These popular slogans – Happy new year!  Happy Easter! Happy Christmas!  Happy Birthday! Happy Wedlock! Happy Anniversary!  Happy survival and other happies and the man’s desperate need for happiness. The history and problem of happiness have persisted from ancients to modern philosophers, but the question have not received a general accepted answer.

Happiness is seen as attaining a virtues life, a process through which man seek for the ultimate good. However, the question of happiness is seen in ethics; the branch of philosophy, which try to answer questions as regards what is the moral standard, the end we ought to pursue? etc.  According to the general notion of happiness and of necessity every man desires happiness.

This notion consists of the perfect good. But good is the object of the will and since this is so, the perfect good of a man is that which entirely satisfies his will. Thus, the desire for happiness is the desire for the satisfaction of one’s will. And this is  what every one desired.  We shall observe in his work the extent and limitation at which happiness guarantees individual actions.

  • Statement Of The Problem

This research work is meant to investigate the controversy over happiness which began with Plato and Aristotle and continues at the present time. How far have philosophers given solution to the problem of happiness?  What is happiness?  How is it to be attained? In what does happiness consists?  Is it the same for all men or do different men seek different things in the name of happiness?  Can happiness be acquired on earth, or only here after?  Is the pursuit of happiness a futile quest?  These are the main questions constituting the problem of happiness, which invariably is the concern of this research.

  • Purpose Of The Study

The aim of this study is to explore the concept of happiness and its origin as established by different philosophers. It will also examine the extent and limitation at which happiness guarantees and guards the individual actions as regards the ultimate goal.

  • Justification Of The Study

This project to a certain extent intends to justify the fact that the human mind is geared towards achieving the life of virtue and this is rooted in the concept of happiness. This as a result dismisses the erroneous view held by the hedonist that pleasure is happiness. On the other hand, this work will equally prove that not all actions that seems good bring happiness.

  • METHOD OF THE STUDY

This work is based solely on library research method. This includes the use of textbooks, and articles in edited works including internet materials.  And our method of analysis is essentially argumentative, analytic, expository and critical.

  • Scope Of The Study

This research work is essentially focused on the concept of happiness and its moral implications. However, other concepts relevant to our study both as treated in many works and the views of other philosophers will equally be made reference to when necessary in order to make clearer and more explicit the issue about the aim of all human action.

  • Organisation Of The Study

This research work is divided into five chapters.  In chapter one, we carefully outlined the introduction with methodological consideration. Chapter two exposes the relevant literature, chapter three deals with the explanation of the relevant concepts and equally the causes of  happiness and unhappiness, chapter four considers the place of happiness and its moral implications while chapter five contains the evaluation and conclusion of the work.
