CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

Background To The Study.

In the last century, there are many ways of teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools, like traditional way of teaching in this method of teaching, teachers teaches through sound, native reading, some methods pf mix phonics and whole word, this refers to a process whereby teachers teaches by reading together with the learners. Reading workshop is base on the promise that readers need time to read and discuss their and they are provided with variety of reading materials of their choice. During reading workshop, the teacher models a whole-group strategy lesson and then gives students large blocks of time to read and to practice the strategy. This practice can occur independently, with partners or in small groups with a book or text chosen by the room and confers with the students about their reading, at the end of the workshop the whole groups come together to share their learning. These are some important strategies that all readers must apply in order to read and understand the text content; Making connections, Creating mental image, Making references/ Drawing conclusions, Asking questions, Ronette ( 2011).

     Economics is said to be the study of how scarce resources are or should be allocated. The aim of economics activities is the production of goods and services for the satisfaction of human want, but broad aim of economics policy maybe regarded as ensuring that as many as possible of those wants are satisfied Okwor (2005)

The rate of change brought about by new technology has had a significant effect on the way people live, work, and especially in the school. New and emerging technologies challenge the traditional process of teaching and learning, and the way education is managed. Internet is one of the components of information and communication technology, it is used in the field of study to receive and access binformation in making teaching and learning more easier Owolabi (2008).

According to John (2005). Internet is defined as a global network connecting millions of computers. More than hundred countries are linked into exchanges of data, news and opinions. He also states that internet is a massive network of networks, a net working infrastructure. It connects millions of computers together globally, forming a network in which computer can communicate with any computer as long as they are both connected to the internet. The world wide web (www) is a way of accessing information over the medium of the internet, it is information sharing modem that is built on top of the internet.

According to national Center of education (2005) stated that over the past five years schools have been rapidly acquiring access to internet telecommunication. Over 90% of schools now have some sort of access to the internet, some place in their buildings. He also stated that the type of internet access that schools had was limited to individual telephone modems connected to single computer laboratories.

According to Naggy (2005), stated that the ways in which teachers of economics use information for improving teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools includes the following;

-Student information gathering (student research):

Just as information gathering for lesson preparation is the most common use of the internet by teachers, student use the internet for “research” or information gathering, more than any purpose. Infact, in the past two years web searching has become the third most common use of computers by the student at senior secondary schools, after word processing and use of compact disc, Read only memory (CD- RAM). Web searching even slightly surpasses skills practice by computer drills and learning in terms on how frequently teacher have students use computer in that way Offorma (2009).

   According to Meller (2008), states that only a majority of teachers had students use wed browser during the last school years, the effect of having classroom located internet connectivity seems to have been large, at least in terms of base line levels of use. He also stated that among teachers with modems in their classrooms, nearly half had students use web browsers on at least three occasions what mighty be called “Regular” use.

-Project and publishing:

beyond the traditional activity of using information sources to write assignment, contact other individual to collaborate with classes in other schools. As of 1977-98, however, very few teachers had student uses internet to do their assignment and allow their students to get involved in internet based activities.

   According to Charles (2007), States that the reason why teachers of economics use internet in improving teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools as follows:

   -To make tomorrow’s work force for economics students competitive in an increasing high- tech word, making use of internet more effective and efficiency.

   -To use internet bring student valuable connections with teachers, other school student and a wide network of professionals around the globe.

According to Seltzer (2005), stated that as a global network, connecting millions of computer together can be a source of data for both economics teachers and student. He stated that student normally go on internet information based on the research they carry on. Internet is one of the fastest way to get information. In any society and it’s also less time unlike other means of getting information. In the economics classroom the economics teacher may sometime find it difficult to get all the need in the textbook, that is why he normally gets information from internet to make his teaching easier and effective.

   –use in planning of economics lesson note:

most economics teacher make use of information and other resources on the internet, E- mailing with teachers at other schools and posting information, suggestions, opinion (www), Nicholls (2005).

     According to Karrier (2005), stated that majority of economics teacher 68% use the internet in their effort to find information resources for use in their lesson, and more than one quarter of all teachers reported doing this on a weekly basis or more often is 28%. Teachers who use the internet or classroom access are almost equal related to use and teacher who have the combination of both home and classroom access report the most frequent use, with 40% of such teacher reporting weekly or more frequent use of course, it’s also likely that teachers who want to use the internet may go to some extent to acquire either home or classroom access, but it also maybe that presence of technology increase utilization.

Despite these findings, it is also true that even among teachers with both home and classroom internet access, more teachers report only “occasionally” use of the internet for lesson planning than report use on at least a weekly basis.

Statement Of The Problem.

Things are changing globally, and there are different and modem ways of doing things if the essence of the educational policy is aimed at producing manpower which can cope with the ever changing modem world, and the part of the global village. The textbook and talks method hardly bring information needed in the classroom, it need to give way to the use of newer information from internet.

   In the present classroom condition now, information from the textbook is not enough to make teaching and learning easier and effective that is why the economics teachers need the best way to collect information to make his classroom lesson more effective, so this research is aimed at evaluating the best means of using internet in improving teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools in Anambra State Local Government Area.

Purpose of the study.

The Purpose of this study is to find out     ;

  1. The ways the use of internet influence teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools in Anambra West Local Government Area.
  2. The possible measures that could be adopted in improving teaching and learning of economics via internet in Senior Secondary Schools in Anambra West Local Government Area.
  3. The impediments of improving teaching and learning of economics via internet in Senior Secondary Schools in West Local Government Area.
  4. The ways the use of internet contributes towards enhancing the academic performance of economics students in Anambra West Local Government Area.

Significance Of The Study

Significance of the research will be useful to both cur curriculum planners and all stake holders in educational administration on the needs to train economics teachers in the best of using the newer method of getting information from internet to improve teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools.

   Paradoxically, there is a change in the global world, the traditional method of teaching and learning are now modernized by the technology, use of textbook in getting information is now outdated because the newer technology had made it easier for economics teachers to get new materials needed in making teaching and learning effective, so the finding of this research will help economics teachers to adopt the new method of using new information from internet in teaching and learning of economics in Senior Secondary Schools

Finally, internet is been so important to some people and they includes, teacher, student, school.

     Internet provides benefit to teachers is different ways, as follows:

  • It’s easier to updater learning materials into their responsibility in accordance with the demands of economics developments that occurred;
  • Controlling the learning habits of students;
  • Allows the interaction of learning from anywhere and at any time;
  • Reaching students in a broad rang of (potential to reach a global audience).

The main benefit of internet for students is the flexibility of students learning a more optimal, where he could access the materials by reading or downloading learning materials at anytime and repeatedly. Students can also communicate with the teacher at anytime.

Internet model also provides great benefits for schools, mainly in term of:

  • Providing teaching materials that have been validated by experts based on their fields so that every teacher can use with ease for effectiveness and efficiency of learning as a whole increase;
  • Learning content development will be compatible with subjects;
  • Encourage foster attitudes of cooperation between teachers and teachers, teachers with students in problem-solving learning.

Internet is also import to the societies, it’s refers to the devices used to communicate between computers, internet has greatly impacted and enhanced global socialization and interactions, infact internet has taken over nearly every aspect of our daily lives from commerce ( buying and selling ) to leisure and even culture. Today, mobile phones, desktop computers, hand held devices, emails and the use of internet has become a central part of our culture and society, these technologies play a vital role in our day to day operations, it has made global social and cultural interaction very easy, and also made a major contribution towards the elimination of language barriers-people speaking different languages can connect and socialize or trade in real time via the internet, Schoolnet (2012).

Scope Of The Study.

This study is intended to cover Anam High School, Great sailor Int’l College and some other public Senior Secondary Schools in Anambra West local Government, Anambra State.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances like time and constraints as well as bureaucracy that makes accessibility of information difficult or nearly impossible, certain modification had to be made.

Research Questions

For effective and efficient presentation of research works, this research is aimed at answering the following question:

  1. What are the ways the use of internet influence teaching and learning of economics in senior secondary schools in Anambra West Local Government Area.
  2. What are the possible measures that could be adopted in improving teaching and learning of economics via internet in Senior Secondary Schools in Anambra West Local Government Area.
  3. What are the impediments of improving teaching and learning of economics via internet in Senior Secondary Schools in West Local Government Area.
  4. What are the ways the use of internet contributes towards enhancing the academic performance of economics students in Anambra West Local Government Area.
