PROJECT TOPIC- INFLUENCE OF IMPROVISED RESOURCE  MATERIALS ON STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN  ECONOMICS

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Sometimes in our classroom teaching, we discover that a particular piece of equipment needed for effective delivery of lesson is lacking. If we are able to devise, or create a suitable substitute for it, the substitute created in improvises materials. We can therefore define improvisation as a technique or originating a totally new tool, instrument, material, devise, or modifying existing ones to serve a particular function.

Improvisation is a long-standing technique in teaching and learning environment or situation. It is probably as old as the classroom teaching learning, Young (1979). However, a more systematic approach to improvisation in social science was development in response to the acute shortage of instructional equipment after the Second World War.

The situation in Nigeria today is perhaps more acute than what prevailed after the second world war as regards scarcity of instructional materials. The explosion in school enrolment and poor state of the Nation’s economy and the falling standard of education in Nsukka local Government Area in particular creates a serious scarcity of teaching aids.

Therefore, there is a great need to provide substitutes for conventional teaching materials. There is, however, an additional reason why improvisation is necessary in effective teaching of economics. Students are likely to show greater interest and participation in economics lessons if they are co-operative in the production of local materials used in the lesson.

Students are also made to realize the interrelationships among the different curricular activities one the timetable. For instance, where materials produced by the students in creative Arts lessons are utilized in Economics studies, they will easily see the relationships existing among these subjects; local profunction involved the teacher and students in realistic problem-solving activities, which stimulates learning, (Jamaica et all 1981).

Bajah (1983) defined improvisation as the act of using alternative materials and resources due to insufficiency of some specific first-hand teaching aids, to facilitate instruction. Improvisation capitalized on the use of local resources from the community to minimize cost of instructional materials. That it enhances creativity and productivity and at the same time contributes meaningful to economics teachings.

Improvised resource materials are very important to the economics teachers and students for the following reasons (Renner 1971) said that practical work in economics assumed an important role in the development of psychomotor domain of the taxonomy of educational objectives. In using improvise materials, a student is more or less investigating on his own, the objective being the develop cognitive  and intellectual skills which are manifest in the manipulative and educational skill, Hurd (1977).

According to Abdullahi (1982), the use of appropriate improvised materials help to focus attention of students on concept being taught. In other words, the use of improvised materials help to keep students on the learning task. Also, they help to stimulate the interest of the students, in the learning process and making them positively disposed in the subject matter.

In spite of it’s importance, many teachers still find it difficult to improvise instructional materials when necessary. Many teachers cannot improvise or use locally available resource in absence of standard resources. To others, the government must provide all the instructional materials. One major problem militating against effective teaching and learning of Economics in our secondary schools today is inadequate provision of basic equipment.

Government determined effort to combat this problem is by importation of equipment which made little impacts. Solution offered by such a measure has been short-lived as insufficient of technical expertise and know how and inefficient use of the equipment reduces the operational efficiency and durability, also funds available for purchasing the teaching materials are not properly used.

  • statement of the problem

Economics is social science, which touches almost all aspects of human endeavour. It uses some concept, which are abstract in nature such as price, utility, demand and supply and soon in the analysis of human activities. Economics teachers has neglected the important instructional materials in teaching economics. And as such most students base their study of economics on cramming.

Most often some teachers uses wrong instructional materials to teaching aid while some of these materials are expensive to provide enough to the schools by the government. It is against this problem that the research wish to identify the influence of improvised instruction aids on the students performance in Economics in our secondary Educational system.

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study that borders on the influence of improvised resource material on the students performance in Economics will be beneficial to the following people. The teachers, students, school Administrators and government.

Firstly, the finding reveals to the teachers the importance of instructional aid in the teaching economics. These aid of properly used males learning easy.

Secondly, this study will also help the students to understanding the subject better, see it as part of their everyday activities and hence have good background knowledge of Economics before entering higher institution of learning.

Thirdly, the school administrator will understand with the aid of this study the need to emphasize more on the use of instructional materials and therefore provide adequate financial resource, motivation to enhance it.

Fourthly, the finding will reveal to the government need to allocate more money to education sector to enhance improvisation of materials in schools.

  • PURPOSE OF STUDY

My concern is to determine the influence of improvised resource materials on the student’s performance. Thus, the broad objective is the impact of improvisation on student’s performance in Economics.

I may consider the following objectives below as specific.

  1. To find out the extent to which teacher’s professional qualification contribute to this ability improvisation of instructional resource materials.
  2. To ascertain the extent to which inadequate finance affects teachers desire to improvise.
  3. To determine the extent to which school environment affects teachers ability to improvise instructional material.
  4. To find out the extent to which improvisation of research materials can solve the problem of poor performance of student in Economics.
    • SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The problem is limited to find out the impact of improvised resource materials in teaching and learning of economics in selected secondary schools. The study is focused at Nsukka Local government Area of Enugu state.

  • RESEARCH QUESTION

The questions, which this research work seeks, answer to are:

  1. To what extent does teacher’s professional qualification contribute to his improvisation of instructional resources?
  2. To what extent does inadequate finance affects teachers desire to improvise?
  3. To what extent does school environment affects teacher’s ability to improvise instructional resource materials?
  4. To what extent can improvisation of resource materials solve the problem of poor performance of students in Economics?
