PERCEIVED EFFECTS OF STRESS ON PRODUCTIVITY AMONG WORKERS OF MICRO – FINANCE BANKS IN ENUGU STATE.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of Study

It is a common feature that people as individuals or groups interact with their environment. These experiences when carried into the organizations, may help to increase or bring about decline in their productivity and performances. Stress has generated a great deal of interest in recent years. It has been a great concern to employees who experience it, information from the United State of America. Puts the cost of stress related problems at between 10 and 20 billion dollars (Faragher, Cass and Cooper 2005).

American Medical Association (AMA) (2004) revealed that Stress related disorders include hypertension, ulcer, migraine and back pain, disturbance in sexual functioning, menstrual irregularities, skin problems and respiratory system related problems. Stress is abound in places or homes where there is no love, where there perpetual strive and diverse obstruction in the way of achieving ones goals or satisfying one’s desire either biological or physiological, social or self-needs. Stress is present in abound in communities where there is lack of safety or security, war, famine, hatred, communal fights, confusion, poverty or lack. Stress is the deviation of an individual from a normal state of health to abnormal. Man’s response to a particular stressful situation makes stress good and bad. When there is a good response to a stressor then, you are on the positive side and when there is a harmful or bad response to a stressor, then you are on the negative side. Your ability to cope with life situation will make the same stressor to be either positive or negative. Faragher, Cass and Cooper (2005) asserted that, people are stressed up in communities where there is insufficient essential services and poor leadership which cannot provide adequate jobs, housing, shops and places where people can buy what they need in sufficient quality, recreation centers and other basic amenities like water good road, electricity all of which provide people with good homes, a life work, a sense of belonging and contentment necessary for a mentally healthy state and stress – free life.

Stress however is a psychological health related problem which must be given a great attention in our society today, as it’s perpetuity can lead to psychosomatic disturbances and mental illness like anxiety, depression, phobia, hysteria, emotional problems neurosis psychosis, aggression, heart attack, post-traumatic stress disorder, sudden death and even accidental or non-accidental death (suicide) to mention a few.

In this regard, the present study seeks at finding the causes, symptoms, effects and the relationship that exist between Job stress and employee productivity and finally to recommend stress coping strategies to management

Statement of Problem

Stress in our working places today, is a very common issue. Employee’s are confronted with a lot of social and economic problems, which impinge on their mental and psychological well-being. However, marketers that are being used by LAPO microfinance bank are not truly marketers because they do not really pass through proper coping training strategy to enable them to overcome the stress they face in their job. From findings in micro finance banks in Enugu State, it was observed that the major sources of stress were role overload, poor salaries, lack of promotion, lack of motivation, long working hours, role ambiguity, non delegation of work and role conflict. The major symptoms by which it was recognized was ill-health, poor job performance, lack of concentration, hindered career progress and stress was always leading to job performance.

Purpose of Study

The purpose of the study is to identify the perceived effect of stress on productivity among workers of Micro-Finance banks in Enugu State. Specifically, the study seek to.

  1. Determine perceived effect of work overload on productivity among workers of Micro-finance banks in Enugu State
  2. Determine perceived effect of Job ambiguity on productivity among workers of Micro-Finance Bank in Enugu State.
  3. Determine perceived effect of Job conflict on productivity among workers of Micro – Finance Banks in Enugu State.

Scope of the Study

The study was delimited to Micro Finance Bank workers in LAPO Micro – Finance Bank in Enugu State through  the use of self structured questionnaire as instrument for data collection. It was delimited to 200 respondents for the population of the study. Inferential statistics of chi-square (X2) was used to analyze all data collected.

Significance of Study

The study when concluded will be of paramount importance to micro-finance banks in Enugu State in the following ways:

It will be beneficial to the micro-finance bank workers by exposing workers to stress related disorders like hypertension, ulcer, migraine and others and how to cope with such life treating situation.

The study will be of significant value to micro-finance bank workers by assisting management on ways that will enhance job productivity.

It will also be of great benefit to workers of micro-finance banks in Enugu State and Nigeria at large that stress can be managed and not avoided.

The management of micro-finance banks in Enugu State will also benefit by delegating responsibilities and increasing individual autonomy where the situation calls for it.

It will also be of great benefit by setting and enforcing policies for mandatory vacation and reasonable working hours. Clarifying goals and decision criteria in order to bring about increase performance and productivity.

This study will serve as a reference material for others in the future.

Research Questions

The following research questions were formulated to guide the study.

  1. What is perceived effect of work overload on productivity among workers of micro-finance banks in Enugu State.
  2. What is perceived effect of job ambiguity on productivity among workers of microfinance banks in Enugu State.
  3. What is perceived effect of job conflict on productivity among workers of micro-finance banks in Enugu State.

Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis was specifically tested:

  1. There is no perceived significant effect of work overload on productivity among workers of micro-finance banks in Enugu State.
  2. There is no perceived significant effect of job ambiguity on productivity among workers of micro-finance banks in Enugu State.
  3. There is no perceived significant effect of job conflict on productivity among workers of micro – finance banks in Enugu State.
