PROJECT TOPIC- ASSESS PESTICIDE CONTENT OF SOILS AND VEGETABLES GROWN UNDER PESTICIDES IN ABAKALIKI, SOUTH EASTERN NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE

1.0       INTRODUCTION

Soil as a medium for plant growth and management has been identified as vital for sustainable high yields of crops (Sobulo, 1994). The worker attributed the failures in Nigerian agricultural system for over three decades to poor knowledge of soil management and poor adaptation of foreign technology to Nigerian conditions. Vegetable production known as olericulture consist of deverse plant species with considerable agronomic, economic and morphological characters.

The major fruit vegetables are: Pepper (Capsicum annum) Egusi (melon) Citrullus launatus Thumb; Okro Abelmoschus esculentus; Tomato Lycopersicon esculentum; mile; others are leafy vegetables such as Amaranthus; Celosia; Solanum macrocarpon; Corchorus Olitories .L., and Telfairia occidentalis Hook. F (Deuton and Olufelaji; 2000). The Dictionary of Biological Terms (2000) defines pesticide as general term for any chemical agent that kills animals pests.

The list of mercury and persistent organo-chlorine compounds are DDT; Aldrin, Endrin, Dieldrin, Chlordane (RSC, 2001). Most of these pesticides are still used in checking pests of vegetables like ants, weevils, files, nematode, downy mildew to enhance yield of leaves and fruits. Most of the indigenous vegetables like okro, gardenegg, tomatoes, cucumber, cabbage, melon, onion, amaranthus exist in home gardens or in forests where they are collected or sold for food.

Denton and Olufolaji (2000) reminded that such pesticides contribute to nation’s nutrition and rapid attainment of food security. The authors reported the characterization of the vegetables and their reaction to diseases and pest as very vital for agronomic and genetic uses. In Abakaliki vegetable forcing and production is part of agriculture of the people during rainy and dry seasons, with more pests infestation during the rainy season.

The farmers resort to use of traditional and chemical sprays to control vegetable pests including ash, DD-Force, aldrin dust. Most of the chemical pesticides are known for persistence in the food productions via uptake or in the soil environment where they remain undegraded for long time (RSC, 2000). There are also incidences of food poisoning arising from consumption of raw vegetables or fruits or improperly prepared ones; attributed to pesticide residues. Hence, the motive of present research is to explore some areas of concern to growers, consumers and regulators.

The main objective of the study was to assess pesticide content of soils and vegetables grown under pesticides in Abakaliki, South Eastern Nigeria.

  • SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
  • Include to determine the residue of chloride and phosphate that are active ingredients of DD-Force pesticide in vegetable crops namely: Okro, Garden Egg, Amaranth.
  • To measure the residue effect of the pesticide in some soils of Abakaliki.
