PROJECT TOPIC- ASSESSEMEMNT OF THE AVAILABILITY OF LABORATORY FACILITIES FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS SUBJECTS IN TECHNICAL COLLEGES IN EBONYI STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to assess the availability of laboratory facilities for teaching and learning of electrical/ electronic subjects in technical colleges in Ebonyi state. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The study made use of survey design. The area of study was government technical colleges in Ebonyi State. The instrument used for data collection was check list. The instrument was validated by three experts in technology and vocational education department Ebonyi State University. The data was analyzed using mean and percentage. The major findings made, out of 35 items only seven were adequate and 28 were in-adequate. As a result of findings, it was recommendated that government should provide fund for electrical/ electronic facilities in technical colleges to avoid depletion of skill acquisition.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The quality of education and training given to youths depend greatly on the ability of institution to adjust their educational contents to the changing skill requirements of the nation. This can be achieved with the availability of laboratory facilities for teaching and learning especially in electrical and electronics. The institution and government are expected to provide facilities that are necessary to bring about effective teaching and learning. This is true when the available facilities are functional for instructor use for student to acquire skills.

Teaching is the systematic activity deliberatively engaged in by somebody to facilitate learning of intended, worthwhile knowledge, skills and values by another person (Ofor, 2002). The essence of teaching is to give individual what they deserves therefore the available facilities in the institution should be assessed to verify whether it is suitable for the purpose it is intended. Educational facilities are of no value if the student did not use it to learn.

Learning involves the acquisition of knowledge, ideas, skills, values, and experience, which enables individual to actualize his goals. Institutional training is aimed to equip students with useful skills and improve their knowledge and capacities in chosen fields such as electrical electronics. In some institutions, laboratory facilities suit with number of students using it and in other, number of students are much struggling to operate in a particular machine, which will demoralize their zeal in practical work. Learning results from participating in activity that comes up during teaching. It occurs as a result of newly acquired skills, knowledge, perception, fact, principles, and information at hand (Abong, 2006). The students can achieve his goal through the use of some laboratory facilities.

Laboratory facilities are those tools, equipment and materials used for effective teaching and learning in any instructional programmed. This involves electrical/ electronic facilities for practical exercise in the institution. There are different types of tools in electrical electronics such as machine tools, hand tools, cutting tools driving tools etc; different types perform several functions in a practical work – of students.  Students need facilities for better practical work experience situation in order to be proficient in any electrical and electronics job which they have instructed and will do well (Mkpa, 2001). when there is enough laboratory facilities provided in technical institution, effective acquisition of practical work needed by the society will be increasing; and the quality of graduates of the field will also be less in depletion. Assessing electrical and electronics facilities will aid students, tutors, graduates and the nation for future development.

Assessment involves the use of empirical data on students learning to refine, program and improve students’ learning. (Allen, 2004) It is the systematic bases for making references about learning and development of students. It is also the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing, interpreting and using information to increase students’ development (Erwin, 2000). Assessment involves gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse source in order to develop deep understanding of what students know, understand and do with knowledge as a result of their educational experience (Huba, 2000). In the assessment of available facilities in technical colleges, the instructors could be able to guess where they will adjust, and also know skills needed in technical college which differs from other institution.

Technical college is an institution that provides specialized training in a specific career field, trade/profession, including electrical /electronics, metal work, wood work, building, mechanical drawing etc. This is an institution that creates room for skill acquisition for benefits of self reliance of individual. It is different from other institutional programme because more science are require in the training, its base on educational programme concerned with technical means, and production of technicians. An individual needs to create avenue for self reliance in order to meet society’s needs for life sustainable.

 Statement of the problem

It seems that there is depletion in electrical /electronic skill acquisition because most of graduates in technical colleges cannot identify, operate and use the available facilities in their field of study. This could be the background of the study which may be   inefficiency of the facilities and also inadequate of facilities. The graduates in the field of study cannot set/establish electrical and electronics workshop in order to actualize self reliance which is one of the aims of technical colleges. (Umar, 2011) pointed out that the goal of technical education in institution is to prepare students for successful employment in the labour market and this condition can only be met through a well equipped workshop with relevant training facilities.

The effective of teaching and learning in electrical/ electronic cannot be facilitated when such institution is unable to produce good quality of graduates to enhance the programme. In some colleges, facilities are much available to the student and in others it is insufficient. Therefore, there is need for Researcher to assess the availability of laboratory facilities in technical colleges for the enhancement of skill acquisition.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to assess the availability of laboratory facilities for teaching and learning of practical work in technical colleges in Ebonyi state; it tends to

  1. Determine the adequacy of the availability of measuring equipment for teaching and learning of electrical and electronics subjects in technical colleges in Ebonyi state.
  2. Determine the adequacy of the cutting and driving tools in laboratory for practical purposes.
  3. Determine the adequate of the appropriate safety materials available in laboratory for teaching and learning of electrical electronics subjects.

  Significance of the study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to students, graduates, the Researcher, the institution and the society/nation.

The finding of this study will guide the student to acquire specific skill in a particular facility, the pattern and equipped in psychomotor domain. The student will also know the lapses in a skill acquisition and the classification of facilities for easy practical situation as they are the central focus of the entire educational efforts.

If the deterioration and obsolete of electrical and electronics skill has been amended, the graduate will benefit from it by establishing his/her own workshop. This will provide him gainful opportunities for employment in the society which he will be further trained and re-trained.

The Researcher will be certified and reorganized when the observations are been published for its amendment/correction. This study will also aid the Researcher to know the appropriate strategies in carrying out research work, and differentiate institutions that are more/less in electrical /electronic facilities.

The findings of this study will motivate the implementer in institution to re-activate the deteriorations of electrical and electronics skills by amending the curriculum, and existence of facilities in the institution.

When federal government invested in electrical/ electronics in technical colleges after the investigation, the society will benefit from it by reducing the rate of unemployment in the nation if the necessary skills are acquired.
