CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

BusinessEducation connotes different things to different people. Some people perceive it as an education to produce goods and services, while some view it as an education for profit, some even perceived it as teaching of shorthand and typing. Whatever the meaning one gives to business education, it should be emphasized that business education affords its graduates the opportunities to acquire necessary skills and competencies required in the business world (Oboh, 2013).

Business education is a programme of instruction which consist of two parts; (1) Office education – a vocational programme of office career through initial, refresher and upgrading education. (2) General business education – a programme to provide students with information and competencies which are needed by all in managing personal business affairs and in using the services of the business (Osuala, 2004).

Njoku (2007) further posited that business education is educational programme that equip the recipients with functional skills, knowledge and attitude/value that enable them operate in the environment they find themselves. The operational statement buttress business education as a study that provides the skills, knowledge and competences needed for managing any successful business outfit. Also, it makes the recipients of business education programme to be self-reliant/employer of labour.

According to Akibu (1998), the objectives of business education is as follows;

  • To prepare and expose students to career opportunities in the world of business.
  • To provide students with a broad orientation to their contribution to the expectation from business organizations.
  • To prepare operators for the production and distribution of goods and services.
  • To provide recipients with facilities and skills for enhancing efficient job performance in business and industry.
  • To prepare students for making logical and sensible socio-economic decision as rational members of the society.

The National Policy on Education stated that for the benefit of all citizens, the country’s educational goals shall be clearly set out in terms of their relevance to the needs of the individuals and those of the society (FRN, 2004:4). Business education cannot afford to be static when its environment is experiencing continuous change, especially the change that is highly propelled by information explosion engendered by Information Communication Technology (ICT) development.

Egwuelu, (2013) defined ICT as the technology of creation, processing, storage, retrieval and transmission of data and information, including telecommunication, satellite technologies, electrical and electronic hardware and electronic computing software, the internet and global systems of mobile communication (GSM), DSTV, DVD player, etc.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is defined as a system designed to acquire, analyze, synthesize, store and distribute appropriate information required by managers to perform their duties (Odiari, 1997). It implies all technologies employed in order to facilitate the collection, storage, retrieval and communication of information by the fastest possible means.

Thus, the teacher using ICT equipment in his class will be able to present a well planned set of lessons and the students will experience these lessons in an exciting environment (Egwuelu, 2013). The misconception that the computer will replace the teacher and thus render him redundant does not arise. All the computer does is to reinforce and enhance the teacher’s lesson. ICT can help students to become independent learners capable of developing critical thinking and problem solving strategies, collaborative work and inquiry (Egwuelu, 2013). It allows for information search, computer modeling, team work, brain storming and revision. Teachers can use computers to make learning experiences more effective and to offer students’ access to a variety of learning tools, expert opinion and alternative viewpoint.

Business education encompasses a number of specialist areas, for example; Secretarial studies, Accountancy, Management, Marketing, etc. Modern information and communication technology (ICT) trend indicated that even more urgent attention to the integration of ICT into Business Education programme is required now (Ihimekpen, 2005). He focused on three topics that are particularly noteworthy because of their pervasive impact on business practices.

The topics are Electronic Commerce, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and Knowledge management (Ihimekpen, 2005). This development reaffirmed the emphasis on ICT knowledge and skills being part of the business education curriculum. Enterprise resource planning systems are company-wide information systems that integrate information throughout the business functions from manufacturing operations through logistics accounting and payroll. These special areas can only be properly covered if adequate attention is paid to the availability and utilization of ICT equipment in every tertiary institutions offering business education in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problems

Abstract learning has often posed much difficulty to learners. Information and communication technology (ICT) is a platform for any nation’s growth and development in a rapidly changing and competitive environment. However, education in Nigeria cannot be relevant without effective preparation of new generation students to effectively use the new information and communication technologies in their professional lives. In Business Education today, modern computers are out-leaving typewriters, making the implementation of its programme easier and innovative (Igberaharha, 2009). Information and communication technology is spreading across all frontiers of education and complex equipments for implementation of business education programme are on the increase. Therefore, issue of availability and utilization of ICT equipment/facilities in business education department is a crucial subject that calls for urgent attention.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) holds the key to most modern business, but the question is how far is the department of business education,EbonyiState University giving their students the corresponding orientation to meet the trend in office requirement of today and the future?Chibuike and Igboke (2009)observed that most of the business education graduates cannot boot the computer let alone work with it, they cannot even search for an information or obtain one from the internet. These graduates are turned out every year to face the labourmarket;theyrather turn out to become an embarrassment to the employers of labour because they get to the modern offices confused and ignorant of the new technologies of the period. This study therefore, intends to find out the extent of availability and utilization of ICT equipment in imparting ICT knowledge and skills to business education students in Ebonyi State University.
