  CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Secondary school dropouts  has given great concern to the state and nation especially in Oji-River Local Government Area of Enugu State. Hornby (1976) in his dictionary of current english saw  dropout as a person who leaves school or college before they have finished their studies. That is to say, a student who did not complete his years of study in an institution. Michgan (1970) said that School dropouts have been on the increase after the civil war in Nigeria.

Today, the rate at which students dropout from school cannot be attributed only to the financial position of parents, but investigation reveals that student are also the cause because, some students especially those that did not have focus can be seen hawking along the road, pushing wheel barrows at various market places, pick-pocketing at the stadium and public places. These constitute  obstacles to their development, not only in the field of education, but also in societal issues.

Daniel (1961) said that the rate at which secondary school students dropout from school is   increasing and  has been described as the fastest growing industry in  country like Nigeria now. Asche (1993) said that the high incidence of dropping out from school poses a serious problem to the social and economic health of the country and negative consequences for the individual dropout. As the pool of

dropouts continues to grow, employment opportunities for them are more limited because to-days economy requires strong labour force, increased literacy, more education, enhanced technological skills, and life long learning. The rate of engagement in high-risk behaviours such as premature sexual activity, early pregnancy delinquency, crime, violence, alcohol and drug abuse, and suicide has been found to be

significantly higher among dropouts. The National Center for Education statistics and primary organizations have identified two types of factors related to dropout which is those with families and those related to  individual experience in school. The implication of dropping out from school could lead to acts capable of ruining their lives. The future of this great country Nigeria belongs to the young people of

today and generations yet unborn. Our duty is to lay a foundation for our youths or students on the right educational direction and we must act to ensure that students are not left behind.
