CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

This research work focuses on the children’s theatre and the education of Nigeria children. Theatre is one of the means in which information can be passed to the public, particularly to the children who can easily grasp the message that is relayed. Theatre as it relayed. Theatre as it regards to children means a lot for the fact that it can be displayed on the stage that it can be displayed on the stage.

The artist performer helps in creating awareness among the people. This we can do through the intensification of an issue or an even for an immediate audience attention. The engagement of the audience in the discussion of this event in the society will eventually lead to a solution of problem. In Nigeria’s current experiment with democracy where the desire for money controls and dominates the

life of everyone, the performance artist whether on radio, television or video medium provides entertainment capable of absorbing the frustrations and twitching of life. The performing artist therefore brings vitality and beauty to human life particularly to children, by using theatre to educate and broaden their minds.

According to Nwamuo (2002:57) he states that: Since the emergence of the children theatre, director in the last guatter of the 19th century, different scholars and theatre practitioners have expressed several opinions about directing children theatre in Nigeria. Some of these scholars and theatre practitioners have been quite elective in their definitions of what directing entails.

There seems to be as many and varied opinions of the basic concept of theatre directing with children as there are scholars and practitioners. Writing on the children theatre in the Nigerian society, Zulu Sofalu observes that except a few notable directors in the country, the director in the Nigerian theatrical scene today is still referred to anybody who manages to impose himself on the production as

an artistic superint enclent or co-ordinator, or as one selected by the sponsors of the production to mount the play. The scholar laments that such persons may not know the re-creative and interpretive art of children theatre, pointing out that such a director may only fumble as he puts the scripts on the stage blindly and insensitively demanding from the authors an enactment or a dramatization or ill-digested ideas listed from the play script and channeled through child acting and delivery.

The same scholar notes that there has been a new crop of directors in the country especially children theatre, he realizes that the modern theatre is director-centred rather than the play-writer or the actor. Children theatre focuses primarily on the education of Nigerian children by using different modes and techniques such as film show, video, television and other means in these children can be educated through theatre displays.

However, education of Nigerian children embodied the promise of better life for children. But, today more than a hundred million school aged children, the majority of them girls, are out of school. Education of Nigerian children brings together parents, children and government to create opportunities for all children to lean to read, write, solve problems and develop their unique potential.

There are many obstacles to education in impoverished communities, but our experience shows that with knowledge and minimal investment, each community can find solutions and ways to educate its children. Education of Nigerian children mobilizes commitment to education and strengthens the capacities and governments to develop, own and sustain their education programmes.

It is important to note that Nigerian education children are activities that cover a spectrum of ages and activities. Parents education and early childhood development programmes reach children in their early years when brain development is most rapid and the foundation are laid for a life time of learning.

Transition programmes introduce young children to schools to welcome children into friendly classrooms where they can learn at a pace and style that is comfortable for them and harmonizes with them to learn useful, relevant material from local teachers. Quality of learning at our school is very high, typically children from various village schools score better on government exams than children enrolled in government school.

Save Nigerian education children, supports children to transition from primary to secondary school since this is a high risk period for school dropout, especially among girls. At every stage of education it works to make schools safe, accessible and free, eliminating some of the most prevalent obstacles to education.

Its target is to improve the quality of teaching and learning through a variety of community and school inputs, meeting school valuables so that families that want to invest in education and children stay enrolled. Thereupon, young people who have left the knowledge and skill essential for health, productive adulthood in non-formal education programmes.
