CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Conflict in human society has taken different versions of manifestation in both proponents and affected societies. It is also a multidimensional concept whose nature cannot be limited to one thing. However, the nature of conflict in literature considers the inaccessibility of resources and lack of social mobility in many stratified societies. In most novels and drama texts, conflict is a struggle between one or more

characters. For instance, in Attard’s novel Home Child, there are two main conflicts, one is between Sadie and her mother, the other is between Arthur and Mrs. Wilson. Here, conflict serves important purpose because without it, the story could not exist. Readers would not learn anything about how the problems were created or solved. It is the conflict and how they are resolved that makes a novel or drama great

reading . if usually begins early in the novel after or as soon as the main characters are introduced. For instance, in . It is the conflict and how they are resolved that makes a novel or drama great reading .it usually  begins early in the novel after or as soon as the main characters are introduced. For instance, in Home Child, as soon the story progresses, friction between the characters locked in and it increases. This

enables the author to weave an interesting and suspenseful tale. It also keeps the reader in suspense. At some points in the story, a conflict reaches a point where it has to be solved. Writer often solve the conflict by creating a happy ending. An ideal conflict is the one which involves at least two individuals. The first individual is the one who cheats and the other being the poor who is being exploited. In so far as

the business of conflict it concerned, the stronger person mentioned above is always referred as to as the one who uses his economic power against the second person usually referred to as the poor and the less privileged, who feels intimidated and thereby tries to resist, in essence, both individuals are guilty of conflict instigation and ought to be punished by the law of the society. But for the fact that conflict is

taken to be part of life in human society, the perpetrators are indirectly permitted to celebrate with impunity and thereby propagate the erroneous impression that conflict is a value to be cultivated and appreciated in human culture and in the world. Due to the high level of the desire to get rich quick which is prevalent among human beings conflict becomes and everyday affair. It is no longer news to hear that

the capitalist and the manager of the economic power can openly and unashamedly try to exploit the poor ones before they could do what they are supposed to do for the development and progress of  their country. Considering Karl Marx’s view that; stratification has to do with situation whereby working class people are not likely to advance socio-economically, while the wealthy man continue to exploit the

proletariat generation after generation, we can see that social class are stratified based on their connection to the means of production. And this results to the bourgeois being in control of many aspects of social life. Then, it is this economic inequalities and the poor management of resources by the ruling class that causes the poor ones in the society to always react. This can be seen as the predicament the

whole world is facing today. Therefore, we have to go for every available means of getting to know what is happening including the use of meager resources which the bourgeoisie have monopolized. This implies that some societal members are serving and others being served, some getting what they want and others not getting, some saying what should happen while others are carrying instructions. In agreement

to the above view, stratification however has a highly psychological dimension since it often breeds a feeling of inferiority and unfulfilment among those who occupy the lower rungs of the stratification ladder. Finally, social stratification produces an intricate web of social relationships. This means that your position in the society determines the type of people you interact with. Arms And The Man and She

Stoops to Conquer which are the subject of our study are explored with a view to highlighting how Shaw and Goldsmith have contributed to the discourse of the motifs of conflict and individual classes in their society respectively. The multiple paths that I followed include a thorough examination of the society and the contexts within which the work was produced, the consideration of the expression of disenchantment

, pain, conflict and social stratification and wide spread decadence in the two plays and the analysis of its literary styles. All leads to the unmasking of the play as a socially symbolic act, that is a reflection of the problem of the play wrights immediate society. Reacting to the degree of conflict and social strata in the society, Oliver Goldsmith and Bernard Shaw wrote She Stoops to Conquer and Arms and The Man

respectively to indict the ruling elites for not following the power of classless society. Bernard Shaw’s conception did not just indict the ruling elites but described a society where conflict has escalated and eaten deep into the fabrics of the society. He alerted his society on how conflict has penetrated all the facets of the society both in private and in public sectors. Generally, my focus in this research is on the depiction of the menace of conflict as a result of social stratification.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The problem to be tackled in this research will consider why conflict which came as a result of social stratification in the world has continued to defy all the possible solution that have been taken by the leaders, philosophers, economic and social critics, to eradicate the menace of their problem; why has social stratification escalated so much in the world despite her culture of innocence and belief in moral

life. Today, we have kept the materialism and thrown away spirituality which should have kept it in check. For things have fallen apart. What is the fundamental basis of the tendency for these changes that resulted to uncontrollable conflict in both religions, political, social and in economic bases in societies.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The primary objective of this study is to critically show that for the fact that society exists, and human beings exists, there is bound to be conflict because it is inevitable in the lives of man. According to Marx, societies are spit into two groups according to the ownership and organisation of the means of productions. These two groups are bourgeoisie and the proletariat. And one of the characteristics of a

mature group is its willingness and ability to bring suppressed conflict to the surface where there may be discussed with a greater opportunity of resolving their conflicts parse are not bad to good organisation. It is neither to be deprecated nor feared. Conflict like sex, is an essential creative element in human relationship. This is premised on the awareness that the dramatists were mainly realistic in their view. It

is not just based on a conjectured imagination but must have an overwhelming and glaring bearing on reality. It is hoped that  this study will go a long way in helping to establish the fact that literature is indeed committed to the prevailing situation of the society.

1.4 The Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to bring to the mind that since societies are stratified according to their individual status, since material acquisition has become prevalent among human beings, there is bound to be conflict from the opposed groups because they will always resist being intimidated by those who claims superiority, And to show that conflict is inevitable in the life of man because it brings a sort of

forwardness to every society who knows how to control and manage it, but any organisation without opposition or conflict remains static and dwarfed. So this study shows that conflict is inevitable in the live of man when it is managed well, it brings development to societies. And since social stratification is an issue of standard, nobody will like to be a sub-standard thereby, it continues to bring problem in the society.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Some countries have suffered a great loss of integrity and dignity as a result of the prevailing situation of conflict which results from the hands of the ruling class. Most foreign investors have refused to invest their money in these countries because of their bad report in the international community. Recently, an international organisation that fight corruption have rated them as the first on the list of the

problematic countries of the world as a result of material acquisition because the wealthy ones has used their economic power against the lower class but government degree of social stratification continued to increase. Therefore, this research will critically look into the menace of conflict as cause by individual classes in the society. It will reveal the bottom-line of the problem and guide both the leader and the follower to understand how the menace of class inequality and its consequences can be eradicated in the world.

1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study

Basically, I have relied on Bernard Shaw’s Arms And The Man and Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops To Conquer as my primary source in order to unmask all the menace of social stratification in the world and in this two texts in particular not going beyond this drama texts in establishing my points.
