PROJECT TOPIC- DETERMINANTS OF ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL LAND MANAGEMENT PRACTICES IN ISHIELU L.G.A OF EBONYI STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

Sustainable agricultural land management practices are a set of management strategies for preventing deterioration of soil fertility. However, adoption of varying soil conservation measures introduced to smallholders is not over whelming. In order to ensure agricultural sustainability as highlighted in the Millemium Development Goals, it has become necessary to focus policies on enhancing sustainable land management practices especially in vulnerable areas of sub-Saharan Africa. Hence, there is need for this study which was designed to analyze the determinants of adoption of sustainable land management practices in Ishielu L.G.A of Ebonyi State. A two multi-stage random sampling techniques was employed in selecting 72 contact farmers used for the study. Structured questionnaire and interview schedule was used to collect primary data from the respondents. Data were analyzed by the use of mean, frequency table, percentage, multiple regression analysis and factor analysis. The findings of the study reveals that 83.3% of the respondent, were males, (79.3%) were married ones and are mainly polygamous and mean household of 7 persons. Majority (91.3%) of the respondents had one form of formal education or another. The mean age, years of farming experience and farm size was 44 years, 20 years and 3 hectares respectively. The result of the determinants of adoption of sustainable agricultural land management practices showed that it had significant influences (p < 0.05) on the determinants of adoption of sustainable land management practices. It was identified that land tenure system and farmers risk attitude were the major determinants of adoption of SLMPs while lack of awareness, low income and land tenure system were the major constraints of adoption of SLMPs in the study area. Based on the findings it was recommended that, there is need to aggressively pursue programmes that will tackle the identified constraints which negatively affects the use of SLMPs in the study area.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Research confirmed that famers engage in practices which promote degradation of land resources, depletion of forest and aquatic resources. This has left diversity of biological resources under serious threats. However, for innovations in sustainable agricultural to yield the desired results, there is need to understand the on farm and off farm determinants of use of sustainable agricultural practices for every region in view of the fact that, no single practice has universal application (Simon et al., 2013).

The major goal of sustainable land management therefore, is to develop economically viable agro-ecological system and enhance the quality of the environment, so that farm lands will remain indefinitely. Thus, specific strategies must be explored which shall take into account topography, soil characteristics, pests, climate, local availability of in puts and the individual growers goals.

In spite of the wide spread knowledge about cropping patterns such as fallowing known to significantly contribute to soil sustainability and remedy soil condition, the situation has continued to be grim and it is uncertain if farmers in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, are taking full advantage of farming practices required for improved and sustainable agricultural production. As such, this study sorts to examine the determinants of use of sustainable agricultural land management practices in the area by providing answers to the following research questions:

  • What are the socio-economic characteristics of farming communities in Ishielu Local Government Area?
  • What sustainable land management practices do the communities adopt?
  • What factors determine the adoption of sustainable soil management practices in the area?
  • What are the constraints to adoption of soil management practices?
  • what are the effects of socioeconomic characteristics of the farmers on the determinants of use of sustainable land management practices in the study area.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The broad objective of the study is to analyze the determinants of sustainable agricultural land management practices in Ishielu local government area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

       The specific objectives of the study include to;

  1. describe the socio-economic characteristics of the respondents
  2. identify sustainable soil management practices adopted by the respondents.
  • analyze the determinants of adoption of the sustainable soil management practices by the respondents.
  1. analyze constraints to adoption of soil management practices in the area.

1.4 Hypothesis of the Study

Ho: Socio-economic characteristics of the respondents have no significant influence on their adoption of sustainable agricultural land management practices in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

1.5 Justification of the Study

The justification of this study centers on the dearth of information on determinant of the adoption of sustainable agricultural land management practices among farmers in the study area. This study will provide information on the level of adoption of sustainable soil management practices in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and provide the prelude to efficient sustainable agricultural land management practices and agricultural land administration.

The study findings will be useful for the agricultural land managers for improving their programmes for effective and efficient land practices to the rural farmers. The Study is also very important as it aims at finding out the determinants and constraints to the adoption of sustainable agricultural land management practices and proffer solution(s) to the problems. Since farming is the main occupation of majority of the people of the study area, the findings of the study will also enhance their management of agricultural land to and improve output.

The Local Government Area, ministries of agriculture, farmers, policy markers and the state will also benefit immensely as it will provide adequate and necessary information for agricultural land and developmental purposes. Finally, this study will be of immense value to future researchers, students and farmers especially those from the study area who may need this piece of work.
