INTRODUCTION

I . 3 BACKGROUND AND NEED OF THE STUDY

I~~dustrial conflicts could be referred to as a generic cha~.acterization that covcrs a1 l forms of disputes that takes place at the ;\~o~-kpIabcect \vccn cti~ploycrsa nd c~iiployees.W hile industrial conflicts is thc central idea on which any discussion on disputes spins but our focus in this particular instance will bc on strike, effect of management conflict on ind~~stria!l~ xmony,tl iese arc ~najora spects of’ incluslrial conllicts. At this juncture it js necessary to make some conceptual classifications. Mfhilc all strikes are industrial conflicts, all industrial con.l’licts may not be strikcs.

This clarification is necessary as a result of the apparcnt abuse and misuse of these two terms. But for the purpose of this ~.escarxlic iiscussion we use the two terms inter-changeably. Conflict Management consists of diagnostic processes, interpersonal styles, Negotiating strategies, and structural interventions that arc clesigned to avoid wnecessary conflicts,.,red~~cocr resolve csccssivc conl’licts or even increase insufficient conflict. ‘I’hus, the essence of conflict is disagreement or incompatibility and comes in several basic I-iwiis, including goal conflict, cognitive conflict, effective conflict aid pi-oceclirral conflict. 111 this study, the researcl~er cxamines strike, effect of maiiagen~entc onflict on inc1ust1-ialh armony: A case study of selected C;o\ler.nment Companies in PorL I-Tarcourt. Conllict as we Itnow is just like change, is a constant in any relationship, be it intei-personal or in an organization.

The cxistcncc 01′ labour union is Si~ndamcntally the outcome of industrial Revolution of 1930. This movement callcd Labour union is a continuous association of wage earners for thc purpose of maintaining or improving the conclil~on of thcir \\lorking I~ves.” A good example of this was the exploitation of worlters in the case of Nigeria Labour Market, where t rl-eedom Trom compet~tion and absence of wage legislation made powerless the Millers. And as Williams (1987: 132) comments reveal attitudes and conflicts styles play an important role in determining \\~Iietlici sncli conflict will lead to destructive or n~utually beneficial uu tcomcs. Effective conflict management involves more than specific techniques. The ability to understand and correctly diagnose conflict is the lirst step in managing i t Tjosvold ( 1 991 : 13-23).
Ir 1s tlic~.ei’use, on this basis that, this stucly is concerned with examination of the phenonlenon in the Nigerian Context. Ho\vever, Rllcnman, ( 1 96 5: 10) and based on the studies so far made by human ~+elatioll(sh eal-is[, conllict has been ~cgardeda s a “social ill” since the historical clays of industrialization and the labour movement. It is I-egasdcclt o Ix fi~~lclamentmalc l explosive, and any attcnlpt to scmove the cause of conflict or supprcss it, re-occusrence its incseasingly present or manifested.
In li~cl,i t L V O L I I ~ not be jnislalten to mcnlion here too, that we are living witnesses to cases of conflicts in our industrial set ups even today
which have resultantly surFaced in industrial unrest, strikes, and lockouts picketing, \\/ork-to-~.ulcs, toppages, withdrawal of services etc i n both
private and government owned companies all over the world.

 1.2 ‘THE STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM NOT SCIENTIFIC

‘I’he economic growth and ultimate survival of companies especially >w \~c s~i n x not~ vnecI ones is strongly affected by the incidence of cnvil-Continental uncertain~lticso ccasioned by industrial disharmony. This is because all companies exists and survive solely on the basis of an intcr-c1i:mge with thcir environments or public. They exports outputs in exchange, to put it simply, they exchange 01- trade. There has been noticeable increase in the number of firms in Rivers State owned by C;o\~escapement\h at has failed or performed poorly as a result oC industrial clislia~~rnony or conflict, in spite ol’ the efforts of organizational management to clean with conflicts.

This Governmental owned firms that is crisis ridden constituting the majority of companies in the economy hampers the 21-owth of the economy. This is why the economy has not really experienced any remarkable increase or growth in the past two dccadcs. TIii~s Ii)r any C O L I I ItLo ~g~ro w il11cI develop economically politically and socially, there is need for industrial harmony. Hence, the need for conflict 111an;lgement and reducing of youth restiveness to cornp:~nics specially ~ o v e ~ ~ ~ non~ecs n tto enhance performance;
productivity ancl general growth in both sales and profit is a welcome development.
111 l’act, scvcral a1 gi~nicnlsh ave bcen that because of disagreement bet\v\leen the worlws and the companies, there is great problem in
achie\~ingth eir goals. The failure if the government nowadays to achieve rapid economic development through all the sectors is largely blamed on
Iack’of a well articulated mancigeinent of conflicts between these firms and its pitblics. As a result of this, stoppages of work, withdrawal of
services, inlel-personal interest etc. and consequently low productivity and perfolmance have become the order of the day. The view above have

Port Hal-court. This will enable the researcher understand the role of managen~etl, ~i n conflict resolution in organizations and the potential
