CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Education is a life-long activity. It is what happen to a child from the date of birth to the day he/she dies. In the school, learners are usually exposed to common or vary related programmes. Some how, the attitude or reactions of learners to programme vary appreciably, furthermore, the school is an organized system.

A number of factors in the larger society directly influence education such as political, marital factors, income factors, religious factors, social economic factors etc. These factors and of course many more others, directly or sometime indirectly influence education. This is so because there is no clear cat demarcation between the school and the large society.

Some of the factors have positive or negative or both effect on learning. Again, some of these factors mentioned can demoralize or discourage hard work and drive in, the children while some factors or combination of them can make children to be lukewarm. Recently, a child’s intelligence was considered to be a fixed entity almost at birth-most people thought that nothing in the child’s environment could change his intelligence to any significant degree.

This assumption has become a greatly debated subject for the educators. There are clear signs in recent research that the most important single influence on the academic development of any child is the attitude of his parents towards him. According to Maynard (1970) a reports from United Nation Educational scientific and cultural organisaiton (UNESCO) based on materials collected from countries all

over the world, shows that “between 80% to 90% of all the juvenile delinquents come from homes in which there has been lack of normal parental care. Since the home is the first socializing agent which the child is in contact with this will influence the development of the child either positively or negatively especially in the first few years of life.

The first step of education begins at home before the school takes over. The type of family under which a child lives, influences/affects a child’s academic performance. The academic performance of the student can be traced from the home background (pattern of family setting) of the students, peer-group, early school age, environment and emotional instability (Nature nurture controversy as Omebe S.E (2000)

there is view that environment and hereditary influences students academic performance both present and future. Frank Musgrave  (1976) lends supports to the view that family with high social status and higher education background are associated with higher intellectual capability. The parental background factors of students pose a serious problem to the academic performance of the students.

Also rearing of children is a matter of agreement in the monogamous family. This is a different issue in the polygamous home. By the nature of family size, problem of internal stress and strain are common features in some of the polygamous homes. While all the children in the polygamous home relates to a single father, each mother associates relatively close to her own number of children.

On the other hand, since each mother is interested in well-beings of her children she has to support her children’s need at all cost. In this case children from the same mother side are bound to co-operate with each other so as to attain the set goals socially and educationally. According to longer (1972) these differences exist because of social factors, which invariably introduced in equality in education

opportunities at the secondary school level. Also, Nwuzor (1988) stated that “Streaming in school also affect students academic achievement. This method make it possible for the children to be grouped in one class followed by the next group and so on. This is done purely on merit. It affects learning with positively or negatively.

This is because when all bright ones are grouped into a class, some who are placed in a class meant for pupils of lower ability might struggle to over take the so-called bright ones. This is positive step on the other hand they feel neglected and dejected and will not make any effort to improve, therefore, degenerating into idiot.

Blair et al (1968) reported in Dubey et al (1979:51) “He may even bully counterpart of another rejected child. In a similar line of thought Odetola and Admola (1987) argued that “our societal class reinforce the advantages or disadvantage we have at birth. It’s said that water find it’s own level and According to Ifemezia (undated) “Education which is good and effective cannot be cheap” it therefore means that quality of education available to their children.

Polygamous family size lack of textbooks, or learning materials and ignorance among the parents have negative effects on learning of children. If a child is happy, he learns faster and better. Therefore it is very important to know how such family background factors influence the academic performance of student in Edda East local government Area of Ebonyi state and Nigeria as a whole.

  • STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

It is the characteristics of every parent to accuse the teacher of their children poor performance in the school. This they do without putting other factors that are likely to be responsible for children’s poor performance into consideration. But when the reverse becomes the case, parent aspiration about their children school be to see them proper both in academic and other aspects of life. One does not argue that.

Obviously, when we think about general performance of students in a class  we may discover that, although, all the students were in the same class while the lesson is being taught by the teacher, some will still do better than their colleagues (classmates). One will begin to wonder what exactly will be the cause of the poor performance despite their efforts to attained to school and stay in the class when lecture is going on or on their academic work. Having this problem is mind, this study wants to examine the effect of parental background factors on the academic performance of secondary school students in Edda East Local Government Area.
