CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Audio-Visual materials are tools or materials that aid teaching. These include such teaching tools as, films, charts, overhead projector, filmstrips, phonograph records, maps-mock-ups audiotapes, globes, terrain-boards, and flannel boards. Like all teaching materials, they facilitate teaching and learning process. Researchers in Education agree

that human beings learn faster and more easily by the use of audio-visual material than by verbal explanation alone. If learning is define as the orientation of the organism to new patterns of behaviour that involve both motor habits and language habits, than the use of perceptual materials in teaching is justified. The process involve in the use of audio-visual

materials is very subtle. Audio-visual materials enhances the efficiency of the teacher hence the appeal to the five senses organs of the body. They also help in making communications very clear and vivid. They bear witness to the spoken word and foster understanding between the teacher and the learner. Religions Education Studies is a stabilizing factor in

the individual, personality. Christian religions education trains the children morally and instils in them the desire to be good and be virtuous. Furthermore, the provision of Christian religions education at all levels is necessary for the purpose of inculcating moral and spiritual values into human relationship. Through the teaching of Christian religions

education, the learner achieves the code of conduct, moral discipline, spiritual, required for peace and stability of the society. Children and adult through the teaching of Christian religions education in Nigeria, it makes them become patriotic citizens of this nation. The Bible which is the basis for Christian religions education studies, teachers and emphasizes

all these expectations. Christian religious education studies means the education in Christian religion for the development of spiritual and moral and mental growth of the pupils. It is expected to give children an understanding of the universe and the interpersonal relationship between human beings and spiritual beings. The importance of

Christian religions education or studies with instructional materials at various levels of our formal school system is not for mere academic attainment; But for a wholesome education of the Nigeria child both morally and intellectually and for a better and peaceful society. At the communal level the teaching of Christian religions studies with instructional materials

at all levels of education has been advocated in the individual moral and spiritual values that is required for peace and stability of the society. In the national policy on education, code of ethics and means of ensuring discipline in public life is advocated for. Honesty in both private and public life is emphasized. The resource materials which the researchers

have been carried out in several parts of the country is to find out the usefulness of instructional materials in the teaching of Christian religions studies. Nglan (1986) said that though there are different kinds of teaching aids that can be profitably used by the teacher only very few are provided and therefore used. This is the major problem as it affects the

degree of student interest in and understanding of their work. This also applies to the teaching of Christian religions studies. Some resource or instructional materials that could be used in the teaching of Christian religions knowledge are: chalk board, textbooks, maps, flannel board, Tape, Television, Teachers Guide, resource persons, flowchart, still pictures,

strip chart, models etc. Map is very useful in teaching Biblical Concepts but they are grossly inadequate. Most schools in Nigeria’s have no religious map or maps showing important religions centres and the ones they hare are old and torn. The resource persons are experts in any identified area of knowledge: and they are also available in the societies and schools

for use: but there are sparingly used whereas, in an interesting lessons teachers should involve students in every activities, given them opportunity to acquire knowledge and share experiences. But the problems facing consulting a resource person is their inability to turn up at the appointed times presenting their lessons above the understanding of the students

though in this case the teacher should serve as a moderator to enable students benefits from the wealth of experiences of such experts. Instructional materials or an audio-visual aid is for understanding of the concept of the study to the students. It Highlight necessary ideas not like to be understood, readily available for reuse by teachers. Easier to prepare, thus

both teachers and students prepare them. And they are not expensive to prepare. They also aids teaching, with them, teachers are more confident to deliver their lessons. The interpretation of instructional materials. For example charts makes things easily. Thus economize time and energy. Charts are an excellent means for condensing different kinds of

information in a striking and easily remember form. Good instructional materials can also help the teacher to clarify functions and relationships that are extremely difficult to explain in words. Audio-visual aids are tools in hands of the teachers through which learning can be made more meaningful, and it enable learning to be caught rather than taught. They are

also means of giving students motive to learn. Instructional materials enable learners to have first hand information of what they study. And learning be come meaningful. Instructional materials enhance a better under standing of their environment. These instructional materials or aid are useful because they can make teaching and learning more meaningful and effective.
