1.1  BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Social change in colonial Africa brought about largely imposition of western economic force and western political structures and ideas of these new force the effects of Christianity education would appear to have been more revolutionary than any other and although the two were fore most part intimately linked, in the chapter education will be treated

separately from Christianity. Ejikeme (2001) emphasized that the introduction of western education into Africa at least to the coastal regents of the continent, preceded the imposition of colonial  rule, though the later event helped to  create conditions and incentives which accelerated, its spread. It is now known that in Ghana western,

educational institution were introduced as early as 1644 but the real beginning of modern education in Africa lay in the nineteenth. Century and came a part of the evangelical and humanitarian drive to “civilize” Africa and to destroy the slave trade through planter western Christianity and spreading genial western civilization. To such on extent was the

The way the achieve this

was through creating a local Africa elite through an imaginative and energetic educational programme the missions remained and important bastion of western education the throughout colonial Africa.

1.2  STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

The advent of western education  through Christianity has left no staone  unturned in changing  the unique culture of people, particular Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state. Culture has been defined as the totality of the ways of life a people. It has to do with the mode of dressing, sport music, dance, technology, learning and other attributes

of life. But surprisingly enough colonialism has tremendously changed our cultural heritage and imposed a foreign cultural. The western education has uprooted every aspect of Ngbo culture. It is regrettable to note that body remembers the culture wrestling dance, music, saving pattern respect of elders and various activities  that unit people of Ngbo together our

youths after acquiring western education migrate in mass to urban area and forget their contribution in the village. Although education has brought position change in Ohaukwu culture, yet a lot of damage has been done as well in our cultural heritage. The traditional societies been disrupted. A new social order is emerging partially out old and as a response

to the new contact with powerful external change agents. The centre is no more hold, which made Chinaa Achebe (1960) to write that things have fallen apart, change are taking place positively and n negatively in our society. this made to wonder whether it will be possible again to review our culture considering the pressure of western education in our societies.

Has western education left any atom of our culture to be revived or has it total destroyed it who again may recall some Ngbo culture since elderly men and women in every segment of Ngbo land has been carried away by western culture. The above problem left much concern and prompted this study for solution.

1.3  PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study was to find out the effect of western education on the culture of Ohaukwu L.G.A of Ebonyi state. The study aims to determine the following

  1. The extent western education has affect the social life or people of Ohaukwu,
  2. The extent Ohaukwu practicing their culture before and after the advent of western education
  3. The extent western education has contributed to the development of Ohaukwu.
  4. the extent western education has contributed to rural migration of youths in Ohaukwu.
  5. The extent peace and community relationship are maintained in Ohaukwu through western education

1.4  DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The area  covered by this study was Ohaukwu L. G. A. the researcher covered the whole community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

1.5  SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will benefit everybody  both youths and adults in Ohaukwu Local government and education  authority as well as Christianity the content of this study will educate every body in Ohaukwu on the background in Ohaukwu on the background history Ngbo and her culture, from this the youths and adults will contribute to revive some of the good culture of

their communities. This study will help to reduce Ruralurban  migration and encourage youths to practices their culture. The adult as well will put hands together to trace their heritage and to teach their culture to young ones in Ohaukwu government as well help the people of Ohaukwu to embrace western education by establishing more schools, and  at the same time help in reviving Ngbo culture education authority and Christianity. Further researcher will find this study very useful.

1.6  RESEARCH QUESTION

The following research questions were constructed to guide the researcher.

  1. To what extend has western education affected the social life of Ohaukwu people?
  2. To what extent Ngbo people are practicing their culture before and after western education?
  3. To what extent has western education contribute in developing Ohaukwu culture?
  4. To what extent has western education contributed to rascal-urban migration among youths in Ohaukwu?
  5. To what extent peace and community relation are maintained in Ohaukwu through western education?
