In trying to choose a topic “Effect of Conflict” emerged as the priority of the researcher’s interest because of its necessity in business organizations. A research was conducted based on the research objectives and existing literature. This was accomplished through the use of questionnaire and personal interview. CHAPTER ONE

1.1 INTRODUCTION

Many writers have said much about the concept of conflict as it affects any organized group. The growth or success of any organization depends largely on effective and efficient management and the level of understanding between management, union and employees. However, in peaceful atmosphere and where a great level of compromise exist, high productivity is always witnessed. The emphasis is on the need for

the cooperation of workers for the smooth running of any business organization. In addition to this, an organization is apparently made up of individuals and groups to accomplish certain goals and objectives by means of differentiated functions that are intended to be rationally coordinated and directed through time on a continuous basis to achieve the aims of the organization. More so, people entering the

organization carry with them their individual or personal objectives, some of which are the reasons for their actions and, the organization, as well has its desired profit and corporate goals to achieve. Reasoning along in the same line, Edwin Flippo (1982) argues that “just as the employee has certain wants that the organization is expected to supply, the organizations have certain types of behaviour that it wishes to get information from the employee” that, if this is not achieved conflict is likely to arise in the organization.

John Daft (1986) also argues that the very nature of organizations invites conflicts, because organizations are eloquently composed of many groups that have their conflicting interests. Kornhauser (1954) argues that: any definition of conflict should take account of the total range of the attitudes and behaviour that express opposition and divergent orientations between individual owners and managers on the one hand

and working people and their organizations on the other hand. He further argues that all elements that result in conflict should be considered and not just strikes alone. Therefore this study has been undertaken to examine the factors responsible for conflicts in business organizations, the forms of conflict manifestations between individual workers and individual manager, between individual worker and management and between work groups and management.

1.2 BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

This company cited in Emene, Enugu state has been doing its business for more than 25 years in Nigeria. As any other manufacturing company, it has been weathering through hard times but with efficient management has survived while other competitors had folded up. Furthermore, the company is noted for the production of roofing sheets, ceiling-boards, ceiling tiles corrugated roofing sheets, etc. With positive changes since 1994, the company has continued to improve in sales, machine and equipment replacement, and in overall level of output.

1.3 ACHIEVEMENTS AND METHODS OF OPERATION ARE:

  1. Production: To ensure that production continues in the face of non-too-dependable infrastructures, the company has recently acquired a new dependable generating plant. Sales are nearly 100% production, and the company is producing to maximum of installed capacity.
  2. Industrial Peace: With proper application of total quality management (TQM) principles, the company has thoroughly understood the behaviour of its staff numbering four hundred and twenty (420), its stake-holders, distributors, the host community, the beneficiaries has always enjoyed peace, cooperation and harmony. Industrial unrest has never been its problems, and its workers’ welfare scheme cannot be faulted.
  3. Recognition: Having been lately awarded the International Standard Organization (ISO) certificate, EMENITE has qualified as a great company to reckon with both nationally and internationally.
  4. Social Responsibilities: The company while thinking of corporate profits, has also thought of the comfort of the general public. It pays her taxes appropriately, offers employment to qualified indigenes, trains and retrains its staff, recognizes long service with commensurate awards, demonstrates honesty to all its publics (staff, customers, etc). EMENITE clearly illustrates its genuine concern in managing environmental hazards; prevention of industrial accidents, promoting and maintaining environmental sanitation.

 1.4 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Conflict has been seen as having a demoralizing effects on the performance of business organizations. John Daft argues that conflict has to be effectively managed for the organization to perform effectively and achieve its goals. This argument tends to portray the detrimentality of conflict. Conflict is disastrous and creates unnecessary economic loss that the organizations and the society has a whole must bear.

Sometimes, conflicts result in strikes, stress, frustration and blackmail. It’s pertinent to note that the cost of conflict is not expressly stated in a company’s account and in most organizations management is unaware of the causes and consequences. Awareness of true cost of conflict will stimulate management to take appropriate action to reduce the cost. Conflict is an inevitable result in any type of business organization.

Hence, Richard Hyman (1983) says that conflict is endemic in the society. That you can not stop it. Therefore, an attempt will be made to determine or explore how it has affected the operations of business organizations concerning the successful achievement of their desired corporate goals.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objective of a research work is a necessary precondition to the development of any good research work, for not until the purpose is established can the requirements for meeting the objective be established. From this standpoint the researcher has the following objectives in his research study:
