CHAPTER ONE

 Introduction 

Background of the study

Going by the current situation in the country today it is no more news to hear of many workers losing their jobs due to unproductively and inability to live up expectation. But it always left you in doubt when they narrate to you the various problem they experience in their workplace which affected their performance. You then begin to ask yourself what are these problems, how are they aliment them and what effect do they have on their performance. Stress is a problem experienced by every employee in a work setting. In Nigeria today there is a growing awareness of the effect of job stress on the performance of the employees.

Facts bays emerged of organizations going out of business due to the inability of the workforce to live up to expectation but little has been done to find the root of the low performance of the workforce. Many workers complained of the degree at which job stress affect their performance but it is always a sad story that nothing has been done to control the trend. There are various sources of job stress which affect the performance of the employee in the workplace such as role overload, role ambiguity role conflict, fear of job loss, promotions, lack of adequate information just to mention a few.

The level of employees performances varies in accordance with his perception of the stressful situation, for instance there is the tendency for an employees who perceive a task as stressful to perform very high while some will perform very low. However some organization have come to realize the detrimental effect job stress has on the performance of their workers by making use of employee welfare package to enhance his performance.

It has also become a critical importance for some organization to consider the condition of service given the nature of the job in determining the job performance among employee. Jones (1983) it has always become the order of the day for many firms and organization to write boldly on their advertisement for vacant position that a certain number years of experience is require from interested applicant.

They are doing these because of their desire for high performance and due to the notion that inexperience would not be able to cope with the stress from the job. While some organization prefer to employ male instead of female with the believe that the male employee will be able to cope with the stress from the job than the female employee. Bye and large, one thing is certain that is, every organization has its own stress and job stress is inevitable for every employee but its effect on their performance varies. This study will examine the effect of stress on performance and to what extent does it determine performance.

Statement of Problem

Job stress in organization has been said to have most severe effect. It has been found that some employees do break down in many situations when performing their task or due to stress or hazards of their jobs. But several questions need to be answered in relation to job stress. Does job stress really affect the performance of the employee. Does it have effect on the females than the male ?

Does working experience control stress from job?

Is it the job stress or they do not ordinarily posses the required skill or the job is not meeting their needs that resulted in low performance.

It is a problem that needs to be addressed urgently and critically because it poses a threat both to the organization and the economy of the country at large.

Purpose of Study

The main purpose of this study is to identify the Job stressors among the employee in an organization and to examine its effect on their work performances as to examine the interactive effect between sex, position of the employee in an organization and their work performance.

This study will also bring out possible stressors that lead to reduction in performance among employee and offer suggestion as to check to the trend.

Relevance of Study

This study may serve relevant especially at this point in time when management of every organization are engaged in finding ways of reducing job stress and enhancing work performance among employee from this study organization will gain more insight into the problems of the employees and the stress they are going through hence the need to give serious consideration to alternative strategies of work design and organizational change.

       Findings in this study will help in ensuring that widespread stressors are not allowed to reduce and hinders the performance of the employees in an organization.

       Any stressful situation inherent can bee hanged from negative to positive by adding or increasing rewards and reinforcement thus enhancing the employees performance and motivation of employees.

Operational Definition

–      Job stress: This refers to disruptive or disquieting. Influence of certain conditions (stressors) existing in the Job

–      High job stress: The participants that score above the mean of all the participants on the job stress rating scale.

–      Low Job stress: The participants that score at or below the mean of all the participants on the job stress rating scale.

–      Stressor: This refers to some identified conditions/ factors, variables of situations that causes or induce mental or emotion disruptive influence.

–      Status: – In this refers, to both skilled and unskilled employees.

–      Performance: Performance in this study refers to the outcome or the result of the input of the employee after as demolishing given task in the workplace.

–      Sex: Sex in this study refers to both male and female employees.

–      Unskilled: Unskilled in this study refers to employees that have low status.

–      Skilled: – In this study refers to employees that have high status.

–      Employees: – Employees in the study refer to worker in Afikpo North local Government Area.

CHAPTER TWO

Literature Review

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical orientations relevant to this present study are: psycho physiological stress theory, general adaptation syndrome, Lazarus cognitive model of stress and Spanson model of stress and social support. Fredrick Taylor’s theory of Scientific Approach, Adams Equity Theory, Abraham Maslow’s Need Theory, Fredrick Herzeberg’s motivation –Hygiene Theory of 1959.
