PROJECT TOPIC- EXTENT OF USE OF COMPUTER LABORATORY IN THE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF COMPUTER STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS

Abstract

This research investigated the extent of use of computer laboratory in the teaching and learning of computer studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Ezza North Local Government Area. The aim  of this study was to determine   extent of use of computer laboratory in teaching and learning of computer laboratory in junior secondary school class two student, For the study, five research questions  where formulated.  Survey research design.    was  use Simple random sampling was adopted in choosing eight junior secondary school students out of which, 100 junior secondary school where selected from the sampled school,  Based on the findings four point likert rating scale was used to analyze the result. It was discovered that students in Ezza North Local Government area of Ebonyi state lack teaching aids (computer laboratory and its related facilities). Lack of dedication to the study by the teachers is also discovered in the research work on the basis of facts and figure obtained from the conclusion drawn,  The researcher recommended that facilities should be provided in schools for easy computer teaching and learning and the conclusion is drawn.

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Every society, whether simple in terms of it’s infrastructural cultural and ethnic diversity or complex with regard to it’s technological advancement and quest for modernization has a system of education. This advancement brought about computer education. Computer have touched every part of our lives, the way we work, the way we learn, the way we lives, even the way we play. It almost is impossible to go through a single say without encountering a computer, a device dependent on a computer, information produced by a computer or a word that was introduced or whose meaning has changed with the advent of computers. Because of the significance of computers in today’s world, it is important to be a computer literate. Being computer literate means that you have knowledge and understanding of computers and their uses. Secondly, computer studies as a newly introduced subject in the school curriculum. This study revealed how computer as an electronic device will be used to make teaching and learning more interactive. Computer is an electronic device which accepts data in a prescribed form process the data and produced the result as an output.

Umeh (2004:5) define computer as a “kind of electronic machines that assists mankind to solve different types of problems. He further stressed that computer is an electronic device that is capable of accounting data, processing data, and displaying the result..

Ezeali (2005:1), define computer as “an electro-mechanical devices used to aid calculations with little mental and manual effort. He explained that computer is an electronic device or a machine that is capable of performing calculations and other manipulation data. Computer can further be define as “an electronic machine capable of carrying out services of arithemetic and logical operations with a well structured instructions. It is a machine capable of presenting information to it’s users when programmed for this purpose.

  • To expose the students to the basic rudiment of computer and its workings.
  • To lay solid foundation in computer science at easy stage of education exposure.
  • To encourage and stimulate the interest of student towards computer science.
  • To create a way for easy application of computer knowledge in other disciplines.
  • To encourage literacy in computer sciences at secondary school level.
  • To meet the demands of our time, to keep up with the changing strides in technological development.

In the light of the above, in order to achieve all these aforementioned objective, there is need for proper and adequate provision or establishment and use of computer laboratory in secondary schools, to enhance teaching and learning of computer studies.

Furthermore, recent publication by educationist and related associations advocate for a more meaningful use of a computer technology in schools. This suggests integrating the computer skills into the content areas that should not be taught in isolation as separate “computer classes” as this do not really help student learn to apply computer skills in a meaningful ways.

Ezeorah (2008) stated that computer laboratories are important factors to all purpose machines. The roles of computer laboratory is a very crucial research work, which required carefulness in order to use computer  laboratory in teaching and learning of computer education and teachers.

Uduosoro U.J (2006) stated that effectives learning take place when science is taught through the medium of practical work.

According to Oroke (2013) computer laboratory is a room which contain many networked computer for public use. He further stressed that computer laboratory environment is intended to:

  • Build students skills and enjoyment of crucial thinking, problems solving and their ability to handle unfamiliar situations.
  • Enhance students technical language skills with emphasis on interpreting and writing.
  • Encourage positive attitude towards technology and promote flexibility, in students responses to technological change.
  • Provides opportunities for students to make creative use of computer for course related research and study purposes.

Davis and Shede (2005), Federico (2007), Watson (2008), argue setting in superior to computer laboratory in promoting and integrated curriculum and maximizing the benefit of computer usage to improve learning. Davis and Shade (2005) inter that the use of computer directly in a classroom will maximize the availability of usage. They further argues that “in computer laboratory, student have access to about 1/50th of computers in school, far from the crucial level needed for this technology to have a major impact on education practices or learning experience of children.

Watson (2006) observes that computer in classroom are more “easily managed resources”. As a result computers are more accessible to students during instruction and promote more interactive kind of teaching. Federico (2007), pointed out the need for computer laboratories as follows:

  1. Increase time in using computer for various developments of skills.
  2. Supporting student who may benefit from more individualized help.
  3. As a way to decrease school truancy.

Therefore, the use of computer laboratories in teaching and learning of computer studies, play a vital roles in increasing students skills in research and inquires. It encourages and stimulate interest in learning of computers. It improve their performances in computer studies etc.

Therefore, for effective teaching and learning to be achieved, there is need for proper use of computer laboratories and facilities. The extent of use of computer laboratory in the teaching and learning of computer studies in Junior secondary school.

  • Statement of the Problem

Over the years, efforts have been made to provide computers to Junior secondary schools, workshops and seminars has been organized to train teachers in order to improve their skills and knowledge of computing and computer application to better the production competency and efficiency in the course of their lessons delivery, but these could not go down without some problems. Thus; the problem of Junior secondary schools education today ranges from low level of “computer literacy among staff and students” “inadequate computers for practical lessons” “lack of power supply in schools where there are computer laboratories and in some rural area unsteady electrical power supply. Also in issue of inadequate trained staff/technicians for the enhancement of computer training and teaching, students will past out with little or no knowledge of computer studies. Therefore, the problem of study is how to determine the extent of use of computer laboratory in teaching and learning of computer studies in Junior secondary schools in Ezza North Local Government Area.

Purpose of the Study

The main   purpose of this study is to find out the extent of use of computer laboratories in teaching and learning of computer studies in Junior secondary schools;

Specifically, the study ought to find out:

  1. If the secondary schools in Ezza North Local Government Area have computer laboratories and other related facilities.
  2. If there are adequate computer laboratory facilities, that will improve the understanding of computer studies.
  3. The availability of a qualified teacher in junior secondary schools.
  4. If government can provide the needed laboratory facilities in junior secondary schools.
  5. Do principals organize seminars/workshop for computer teachers and students in order to improve their skills and knowledge in computer studies?
  6. Significance of the Study

this study would be of a this study great sea to the  following group of person:

The student, classroom teaches,  parents, and  government.

To the student; the result of the finding will  provide  with the students some basic skills acquired  from the use of computer laboratory in the teaching and learning  of computer  science in which  these skill    would  be applied in other fields of human  endeavors. also, the (students  )  would get enough  computer knowledge as they learn computer by doing.

To the  class room teacher, the study would help them to inculcate in every child the real knowledge  of computer using the practical approach which will make them happy when they see a credible  performance of their students as a result of their handwork. teachers will also see the need to use computer laboratories in their day to day lesson delivery  in other to achieve a predefined  learning  outcomes.

parents and sponsors  frown at the poor  performance of their children in any subject which computer science is one  of them. the result of  these   study   would put smile on the parents  faces as they will see  you children doing well in computer studies and such, achievement  would be enhanced. they will desire joy and be ready to  sponsor their children in the field of  computer science in tertiary  institution in time  to come.

To  the government, the result of this study would help to find out those schools that Lack computer laboratory and teachers for immediate provision. in this way the aim  and objective of the government In   introducing  the subject would  be achieved.

  • Scope of the Study

The study is delimited on the extent of use of computer laboratory in teaching and learning of computer studies in the public Junior secondary schools in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

  • Research Question

The following research questions were formulated to guide this study:

  1. What is the extent of computer laboratories in the schools in Ezza North Local Government Area?
  2. What type of computer system accessories do you have in your school laboratories?
  3. What is the level of availability of computer system by the students and teachers in your schools?
  4. What are the usage of computer system by student and teachers in your school?
  5. if principals can organized seminars for computer teachers and students in order to improve their skills and knowledge in computer studies.

Does government sees the provision of the needed laboratory facilities as their priority?
