FACTORS AFFECTING CHOICE OF ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS UNDERGRADUATES OF TECHNOLOGY AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY

PROJECT TOPIC- FACTORS AFFECTING CHOICE OF ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS UNDERGRADUATES OF TECHNOLOGY AND VOCATIONAL EDUCATION IN EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting choice of electrical/electronics among undergraduate students of technology and vocational education in Ebonyi state university and suggest some possible solution. The scope of the study concerns itself with a survey of all variable and extent to which they influence undergraduate choice inclinations. Parents, students, and personal influence are perceived as highly influencing choice of electrical/electronics. Teacher and gender are perceived as poorly influencing choice inclination of undergraduate in Ebonyi state university department of technology and vocational education. (the perception of the factors that affect choice perception among undergraduate of technology and vocational education in Ebonyi state university. The total number of the sample size stood at 27 which consists of 20 students, 4 teachers and 3 technologists. Consequently, 27 questionnaires were constructed in order to ascertain that fact. The responses elicited from the respondents was presented on a table using frequency and mean. A number of findings were made at the and of the analysis. Among these findings were that parents have influence on their students choice of Electrical Electronics. It was also found that parent occupation have a relationship with the children’s choice of career. The research concludes and recommends that the child should be allowed to choose his or her choice of career. Parent whose knowledge of career counseling should only guide where the child is indecisive on which choice to make and vocational guidance should also help in making choice.)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

There is a continuous process of change and development in Nigeria and in the economics order. The tempo of change in work life is growing and requires a through understanding of student competencies and work of future career. Prior to the review of the Nigeria new policy on education in 2008, the educational system in the country had paid little or no attention to the acquisition of skills by students.

The emphasis was on academic competence based on cognition, rather than on the total development of the child. This posed an imitation in the career options available to student whose competencies were in order areas that required skill. Choice is the intention of selection or decision to settle on a course of study, or work in an area of knowledge which and individual perform continuously throughout his life span and from one educational level to another for the students to earn a living.

Student enrollments in course and choice in vocations that have no relevance to their interest and competencies have resulted to some of the students’ failure in their examination. If these continuously occur in school, it may lead to frustration and dropouts. Electrical/ Electronic is the field which acquaints its graduates with knowledge and skill which enable them solve electrical electronics technology, problems, services and information system, IEEE (2001).

Since choice has been a regular topic among Electrical/ Electronics undergraduates in our conferences and seminar. It is worthy to note that everyone is born with talent. If such talent are discovered early enough in an individual and if he is rightly guided he will be successfully employed and contribute meaningfully to national development. Thus, the need to dictate the factor affecting the choice of Electrical/Electronics among undergraduates in Nigeria became increasingly pressing as economic and educational strides are being made in the country. These factor will help to strengthen students abilities to make wise choice and to face problem encountered in the technology and vocational education (society)

Statement of problem

Over the years, findings have shown that students’ attitudes toward Electrical/Electronics have really affected their performances either negatively or positively.  In agreement with Anagbogu (2005), who pointed out that with the increasing complexities in the society, industrial and technological development all going hand in hand, youths of the succeeding generation find it difficult to adjust themselves both to the society, work and school.

The above, stimulated the researcher to carryout a research work on factors affecting the choice of Electrical/ Electronics among undergraduates in technology and vocation Education. Thus, this has created a lot of problems to both the student, parents, teachers, educational in the field of Electrical/ Electronics.

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of this study was to find out the factors affecting the choice of Electrical and electronics among undergraduates in Technology and Vocational Education, specifically, the study sought to:

  1. Find out the extent to which parents influenced the choice of Electrical/ Electronics among the student’s undergraduates in technology and vocational Education.
  2. Ascertain the extent to which teachers influence choice of Electrical / Electronics among undergraduates in technology and vocation Education.
  3. Determine the influence of students on the choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education.
  4. Determine the effect of gender-differences on the choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education.
  5. Find out the personal qualities that influence students’ choice.

Significance of study

From the findings, the benefits that shall come up are many, specifically the factor affecting the choice of Electrical/ Electronics among undergraduates in Technology and Vocational Education would be identified and possible solution given. It is hope that the student will find the work of immense help and thus be aware of the factor affecting them on their course of making choice in Technology and Vocation Education.

It is hope therefore, that the finding or outcome of this study would be documented and made available to the department of Technology and Vocational Education, policy makers, administrator in the field of Electrical / Electronics.

If this is done, the researcher’s desire, to contribute positively to the overall development of Electrical / Electronics under Technology and Vocational Education would have been achieved.

Scope of the study

The research work focused on the factors affecting the choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in Technology and Vocation Education. The study was delimited to the students in Electrical Electronics unit (2006 session) and some Lecturers in the department.

Research question

The following research questions were formulated to guide the study, and find out the possible factors affecting the choice of Electrical/Electronics undergraduates.

  1. What extent are the parents influence on choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education?
  2. What extent are the teachers influence on choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education?
  3. What extent are the students’ influence on choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education?
  4. How does gender- difference influence the choice of Electrical / Electronics undergraduate in technology and vocation Education?
  5. How does a personal qualities influence students’ choice?
