PROJECT TOPIC- FACTORS AFFECTING THE EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF TECHNICAL DRAWING IN EBONYI, STATE TECHNICAL COLLEGES

Abstract

This study titled “Factors affecting the effective teaching and learning of technical drawing in Ebonyi, State Technical Colleges” was aimed at finding out method/Techniques normally employed in Learning of Technical drawing in Ebonyi State Technical Colleges, to determine student level of interest about Technical drawing as a subject and the nature of the environment for the teaching and learning and to access the availability of the instructional materials. The researcher adopted descriptive survey research design, the population for the study will involve 150 student, 28 teachers and 3 principals at the technical colleges selected in Ebonyi State, the sample of forty students, four (4) teachers and a principal, total of forty-five (45) sample cash from the three selected Government technical colleges. The findings revealed that method/techniques employ in the teaching of technical drawing have no effect. Those student do not put serious interest in technical drawing, many students have wrong perception about technical drawing and all the teachers are professionally qualified and competent in teaching technical drawing. Based on the findings it was recommended that   government should motivate and positively reinforce all the technical teachers to put their best. As this would ginger them to employ their wealth of experience and technical know-how to captivate students interest in technical drawing and other related subjects, good drawing rooms and instrument should be provided by government and school heads to stimulate students and teacher interest. As the presence of instructional material enhance learning and effective teaching and more technical drawing teachers should be employed and send to the technical schools, since the school do not have handful of enough teachers in this subject area.

Background of the study

The National Policy on Education (2004) stated that the benefit of all citizens of the country’s Education goals shall be clearly set out in-terms of the relevancy to the society, consonance with the relative of our environment and modern world. The attainment of scientific and technology, cal advancement would be if technical Drawing is effectively and properly handled on our Technical College.

Once our Technical college achieve this the nation can then be sure of bringing up youths of admirable behaviour, who rather than being liabilities to the government and our generation will contribute positively to the social, Economic and Technological development of the nation. Technical Drawing enhances skill acquisition which will make the implementation of the 6-3-3-4 system of Education successful.

This is possible if Teachers are able to make students acquire the desired vocational skills, because Technical Drawing is important and highly contribute to the establishment and maintenance of Technical Colleges. Most Technical college have Technical Drawing studio to enable the student prepare well for their self reliance and upliftment (Nwachukwu 1995), A justification of the general philosophy aims and objective of Technical college for the nation as stipulated vividly in the national policy on Education (2004) is to provide trained manpower in the applied science, technology and Business, particular in Craft advancement and Technicians, Provision of Technical/skills necessary for commercial and economic development and to give training and impact the necessary skills to individuals who shall be self reliance economically.

The current effort in establishing new technical colleges, new polytechnics and new colleges of Education across the country is to meet the needed technical manpower. The Technical teachers to be trained under this programme are expected to provide the needed Technical skills for industrial, Agricultural, Commercial and Economical developments. Consequently. It becomes a matter of necessity to conduct as study of this kind on the factors responsible for ineffective teaching and learning of technical Drawing in Technical Colleges of Ebonyi State.

However Technical drawing is a core subject as far as Technical College is concern hence emphasis must be put in its effective teaching and learning. Terence Driscoll (1999) defined Technical drawing as the language of the Engineer and a blue print which shows and analyses the structure design and networking of any Engineering material, product or manufacture goods in the drawing board before taking to the work.

According to language Basic Technology (2008) Technical drawing is a means through which Technologies pass on information among themselves, before any product is produced or manufactured such as building, Car, Television etc. the idea of their various parts are first formed in the mind of the designers through the form of drawing.

Statement of the Problem

The national policy on Education is emphatic on Technology and vocational Education and call on all Nigerians to find a solid base for the acquisition of scientific and Technological knowledge and skill necessary for a lasting and purposeful development. It has been noted that, there are factors that are responsible for this recent call for Technological development (Okoro 1999).

To be able to answer this national call, Ugnabo (1999) has alert the Nigeria nation in particular that they should have cause to begin to ask question about the Technological future of this country within the context of the national policy on Education. In Ebonyi state today, there are some negative factors militating against effective teaching and learning of Technical Drawing which is a core course in the study of other Technical and Engineering courses some of this factors includes:

  1. Determine how quality of teachers affect the study of technical drawing.
  2. Determine the influence of facilities/Equipment/Tools on the study of technical drawing.
  3. Determine students’ perception about technical drawing.
  4. Determine the motivational and incentive on the part of government

Technical Colleges produce students that are not skillful and knowledgeable. If care is not taking there will come a time that there would be a total collapse in the aspect of Education while the nation will continue to depend on foreign made goods and product.

Purpose of the study

The Purpose of this study is to ascertain the factors behind the low student’s concentration, participation and turn up of students and teachers in the teaching and Learning of Technical drawing. The specific objectives of this study are:

  1. To find out method/Techniques normally employed in Learning of Technical drawing in Ebonyi State Technical Colleges.
  2. To determine student level of interest about Technical drawing as a subject and the nature of the environment for the teaching and learning.
  3. To access the availability of the instructional materials

Significance of the Study

 It is hoped that by the end of this study, there should be a change in student perception about technical drawing, there by developing a healthy interest in Technical drawing, and increase their constructive and manipulative skills, which Technical drawing impact.

This study should also be of significance to the curriculum planners, as they will be able to plan the curriculum and the scheme of work and method of teaching technical drawing base on the Child age and level of Education. The Stakeholders in teaching profession will also benefit from this study. Moreover the emphasis to make Nigeria self reliance nation and for the individual to become self employed has been in vanguard in recent past.

The aim of this study is to increase student participation in Technical drawing which would in turn increase their proficiency for constructive and reduce unemployment problems in the country at large, providing the nation with Technical experts who would maintain our infrastructures and improve the nation Technological growth and broaden our hope for the realization of the industrial revolution.

Research Questions

        The following questions are formulated to be answered by this study.

  1. What method/Techniques are employed to increase student’s interest in Technical drawing?
  2. Do student have the right perception about Technical drawing?
  3. Does qualification of Technical drawing Teacher affect the effective teaching and learning of the subjects?
  4. Do the above facilities affect the teaching and learning of Technical drawing in Technical Colleges in Ebonyi State?

Scope of the Study.

The study covers only the Government technical college in Ebonyi State which includes Government Technical College Abakaliki in Ebonyi Local Government Area, Ehugbo Technical College Afikpo in Afikpo North Local government Area and Girls Technical College Agba in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state respectively.
