CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

It is generally accepted that happiness and satisfaction in ones job influence ones emotional life to a great extent and this could be achieved through careful decision which, if not properly handled may mess the career and the intension of the students. The individual and the nation gain immensely only when they undertake a trade that suits their natural endowment.

But it hardly obtains, unless with a proper choice of subjects and the careers ambitions which is product of career and subject and vice- visa. But the problem of making choice of subjects in senior secondary schools is mostly experienced in developing countries of the world. It is not so in developed countries where the child is free to pursue any course of his choice.

For instance in Nigeria as a developing country, the child may not have a final say on the choice of subject he wants to offer due to some factors which includes the influence of parents on the choice of subject for the child which they feel would lead him to the  career of their own choice in that field because he is not knowledgeable in it.

More also, peer group can also influence the students choice of subjects in senior secondary school especially in countries like Nigeria and some other developing countries. A student may choose a subject because his friends who may be knowledgeable in the line chose them. Hence, he would suffer for the wrong choice of subjects he made subsequently.

There is need to make the right choice of subject leading to future career while in secondary school. And this can be done in conjunction with the guidance and counseling unit of the schools, the principal, teachers and also the students parent cooperation as well. According to super (1961), “career is said to cover the sequence of position, jobs of occupations in ones life.

Therefore, one cannot just engage in a job in the name of attaining a goal, rather, one should choose a subject leading to the pursuit of a career he/she is good at in secondary school. This would help in the statement of both the individual and the society.
