introduction

Background of the Study

Before the 19th century, activities in learning situation that was capable of increasing human knowledge formed part of the general field of philosophy. As time went on, different branches of philosophy began to apply different methods for impacting knowledge. The natural science, social science and later Administration which had earlier enjoyed the wide description of moral philosophy, all gradually took off from here and pursued their different methodologies and ways of approach for dissemination of knowledge. It was from Administration as a science of human behaviour that adult Literacy as an academic discipline took off Anyanwu (2002).

Adult Literacy is a type of education with planned programs and formal features. It is the same with formal education since both have well defined mode of operation or rigid boundaries and are the more usual engagement type of education. Adult education is a process where by persons who no longer attend school on a regular and full time basis undertake sequential and organized activities with a conscious intention of bringing about in himself or herself changes in knowledge, understanding or skills, appreciation and attitude for the purpose of identifying and solving personal or community problems Lweright and May (2009).

Alta (2002) emphasized that education on its own is the process of learning of the more usual type which has fixed organizational principles, fixed curriculum, pedagogy and so on. Adult literacy is offered under the nation’s conventional educational system through primary, secondary and tertiary levels. It does not matter who runs this type of education since schools of various categories run by the army, navy, ministry, individuals, missions qualify to give adult literacy education. What is important is that they meet the criteria required by the federal ministry of education Alta (2002).

Ukeje (2001) emphasized the types of education given to the adults in formal situations at primary, secondary, colleges of education, polytechnics and universities. It is the same as adult education even though the former refers to basic literacy while the later is referring to education generally, both of them mean the same. However, out of these forms of literacy education, the one that bothers this study is adult literacy. This is because no one talks without first of all analyzing or knowing the concept of adult literacy.

Basically, literacy is taken to be the ability to encode and decode symbols. Literacy enables the adult learners not only to communicate with others but also to record previous or present experiences which they may wish to re-examine and use in the future. They carry out operations with numbers which could normally take far long time. According to Anyanwu (2002) adult literacy takes the form of either basic literacy that concerns reading and writing to be used in every day discussions. Functional adult literacy has to do with reading and writing used in skill acquisition in some given occupations or trade. The interest of this study is to investigate the impact of adult literacy on the social responsibilities of rural women in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The international organization like United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the conference of Africa ministers of education have recognized women empowerment especially in areas of Adult literacy as an enabling force and essential tools for realizing social responsibilities and for achieving social, economic and political democracy. According to Anyanwu (2000) adult literacy in terms of reading and writing either English language, Arabic Language or both are two subjects that were introduced in Nigeria by Muslim and Christian religious agencies to the young and old ones. This was to help their converts know how to read and write on their own. It has to do with the ability of one to meet with essential social demands which may include relating well with others, attending public gathering and ability to mix up with people, taking part in community works, applying an acceptable method of dressing, mobilizing into developmental projects, and good manner of approach among other things.

From what has been said so far, Adult literacy is expected to be an essential tool for the attainment of these social responsibilities. There are clear manifestations of a functional literacy. This is why the researcher has interest on the influence of adult literacy on social responsibilities of rural women in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Statement of the Problem

There is a strong perception among illiterate rural dwellers in Ohaozara Local Government Area that the cause of high prevalence of most of the social vices which their youths are involved in is as a result of influence of western education. Some of these men and women also believe that women education is not important because such could expose the women/young girls unduly. Their assumption therefore is that women are going to marry and live under their husbands, and so exposing them to western education could so empower them that they may become disrespectful to their prospective husbands. Another view is that since women are made to be married off, they do not require much expenses, and so the earlier they are married off the better for their family. This view point also considers women education as an economic waste.

It is therefore against this background that the researcher attempted to find out if there exists any influence of adult literacy on rural women of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
