PROJECT TOPIC- IMPACT OF EFFECTIVE PLANNING ON TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESS IN AGUATA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN ANAMBRA STATE

Abstract

This research titled, “Impact of Effective Planning on Teaching and Learning Process in Aguata Local Government Area in Anambra State” this research was aimed Examining the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning process in Aguta Local government Area, examine the beneficial effect of planning on teaching in Aguta Local government Area, evaluate how planning affect learning in Aguta Local government Area and also to identify the problems militating against planning in schools in the area of the study. The researcher adopted descriptive survey research design in carrying out the study. Population of the study comprises of teachers in the ten (10) secondary schools in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State with population of hundred (100) teachers. The sample technique used for this study was simple random sampling of ten (10) secondary schools in Aguata Local Government Area Five (5) schools were randomly selected with a population of ten (10) teachers from each school totaling fifty (50) teachers. A researcher constructed instrument was used to collect data which was validated by one expert two from Educational Foundations and two expert from Measurement and Evaluation option of Science Educational Department in Ebonyi State University. Statistical means (x) was used to analyze the data collected. The findings revealed that effective planning on teaching and learning has a great impact in Aguata Local Government Area, effective planning in teaching and learning is beneficial to Aguata Local Government Area and effective teaching and planning has a great effect on Aguata Local Government Area. Based on the findings it was recommended that seminars should be organized for secondary school teachers especially those with little or no professional training, regular and surprise inspections of schools should be intensified to help check teachers who serve, as bad models to their student, in keeping the National policy on education (1977) trained counselors who should be posted to secondary schools and workshops on counselling should be provided with well equipped counselling centre and should be organized for teachers to equip them basic skills of counseling, provision should be made for adequate materials resources and government and parents should not interfere with principal or teachers.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Planning in the context of education entails the process of setting objectives and determining the means to achieving the objectives. It entails deciding in advance what to be taught how, to teach, when to teach, who is be taught, and the evaluation of recipient. Planning is the beginning of teaching and learning process, before a teacher goes to the class to deliver any lesson, he plans such lessons while education administrators make policy and plan the curriculum for the school to implement them.

Through planning for a lesson makes the teaching-learning encounter valuable and productive impact. Conversely, no planning leads to a wasteful and unproductive lesson. The motion pervades education at all levels and in all subject areas (Egbe, 2008). There appears to be widespread agreement not only on the value of planning, but also on the substance and format of plans. The plan that enlisted universal acceptance contains the purposes, experiences and their organization and evaluation.

If a lesson is to be effective, the teacher needs to make decision in these areas before the lesson. He needs to identify the objectives he intends to develop, the knowledge or subject-matter, objectives as well as the process and effective objectives. He needs to select and organize students learning experience that will develop the objective. He needs to make decision about activities to be used, materials to be gathered, amount of time to be spent, and other matters.

Finally, he needs to decide what method or instrument to use to determine whether the teaching accomplished the objective of the lesson Elegonye (2002). Teachers determine how content and skills are delivered in the classroom. School district curriculum, state standards, and national standards play a role in what students should learn (Jackson & Davis, 2000), but it falls to the teacher to structure how students should learn it.

Planning is a deliberate process that results in teachers being well-prepared prior to walking through the classroom door for the day McDonald (2000). Organizing time and preparing materials in advance of instruction have been noted as important aspects of effective teaching. Individual and team planning are beneficial to creating valuable learning experiences for students. Team planning allows teachers to collaboratively examine important issues and to develop a collective approach to instruction Davis (2000).

Both the organization of time and the preparation of materials are components of the broader practice of planning carefully for instruction. Once the plans are developed, evidence suggests that effective teachers follow the instructional or lesson plan while continuously adjusting it to fit the needs of different students. During their instructional planning time, effective teachers assess or recall students’ preconceptions and misconceptions about the subject matter.

Pre-assessments can help gauge students’ prior knowledge of the material. Effective teachers take into account the abilities of their students and the students’ strengths and weaknesses as well as their interest levels. A study of teacher expectations revealed that teachers who had high classroom standards also planned in response to individual student performance, which was then linked to student achievement Fuchs (2001). Teachers who plan instruction based on student performance and interest levels meet both the affective needs of students and their cognitive needs.

Statement of the Problem

Since students learn at different rates, effective teachers plan academic enrichment and remediation opportunities for students. Through the teacher’s knowledge of the students, it is possible to offer alternatives to a student or a small group of students who have mastered the material faster than the rest of the class. These students can study the concept on a deeper level or apply the concept in a different way.

Students who may lack the prerequisite knowledge or skills need the teacher to give them time to learn the foundational material on which to build the new piece. Providing meaningful experiences for all students to learn is a goal of planning. By planning a unit that takes into account the students’ prior knowledge and prior performance as well as their learning styles, a teacher can implement effective vehicles for instruction.

Teachers tend to teach in the manner that they themselves learn best; however, effective teachers stretch beyond that comfort zone to incorporate different learning styles. This ugly development has been attributed to many factors such as effective planning, poor attitude to work, poor infrastructure, lack of qualified teachers, truancy, poor motivation, neglect of instructional media by teachers, hence the need to investigate the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning in Aguta Local Government Area.

Purpose of the study

The main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning process in Aguata Local Government Area: specifically the study sought to:

  1. Examines the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning process in Aguta Local government Area.
  2. Examine the beneficial effect of planning on teaching in Aguta Local government Area.
  3. Evaluate how planning affect learning in Aguta Local government Area.
  4. Identify the problems militating against planning in schools in the area of the study.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will also be of great benefits to the students, as the total improvement in effective planning on teaching and learning, especially in training and development of teachers will help to inform right behaviour in teachers and consequently, improve the quality of education of the students.

The general public will also benefit from the findings of the study. The investigation on the extent the principals of public and private secondary schools on effective planning since the students who are the recipient of the secondary schools curriculum will get the right skills and behaviour that will enable them to contribute effectively to the development of the society.

The theoretical significance of the study is enormous. The findings of the study will hopefully contribute to the existing knowledge on effective planning on teaching. The knowledge to be derived from the result of the study can contribute significantly in the advancement of theoretical works on schools on effective planning.

Scope of the Study

The study covers the impact of effective planning on teaching and learning process in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. The aspect of human resources development that were looked into, include, induction and orientation, training and development, performance appraisal, delegation and assignment of duties of teachers, reward and compensation and supervision.
