CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Good remuneration has been found over the years to be one of the policies organizations can adopt to increase their workers performance and thereby increase the organizations productivity. With the present global economic trend, most employers of labour have realized the fact that for their organizations to compete favourably, the performances of their employees go a long way in determining the success of the organization. On the other hand, performance of employees in any organization is vital, not only for the growth of the organization, but also for the growth of individual employees (Meyer and Peng, 2006).

According to Chaudhary and Sharma (2012) motivation is derived from the word“Motive”, which meansthe needs, wants, and the desire of aperson. Thus, employee motivation means the process through which business organizations inspiretheir employees with rewards, bonuses, etc. for their performance in achieving the organizational goals.

Today, organizations can easily change their material, needs, goods and services to other organizations, or to other countries, but the only one resource which is not easily exchangeable is human resources(Meyer and Peng, 2006). Hence, it is important to note that human resources are the important and most competitive assets of any organization that cannot be exchanged easily. Thus, motivation is the main factor that affects the human resources of the organization. Business organizationsshould motivate their employees for best performance in achieving the organizational set goals. In fact, motivation is the best tool for best performance(Ahmad, 2012).

According to Chintallo and Mahadeo (2013) there are many discussions about motivation and the relationship of employee efficiency and organizational productivity. Motivation will lead to the fact that workers or employees of the organization will seriously do their duties and responsibilities (Azar and Shafighi, 2013). Recently, researchers are more concerned with increased productivity, perfection and working abilities.

Muogbo (2013) noted that motivation is one of the most important terms of psychology and managers who want maximum output and productivity find it useful. They tackle this in a good way and motivate their employees in better ways. Employees’ motivation increases the cooperation between employees and managers, it also encourages their participation and responsibilities towards their subordinates, to take their responsibilities in better ways and also help to oversee other employees and monitor their performances(Ali, Abrar and Haider, 2012).

Motivation in this study will be measured by such factors like wage increase, promotion and training while productivity will be measured by output, profitability and labour turnover. Another way used by employers to monitor employee performance is Performance Appraisal. With performance appraisal, employers can monitor an employee’sperformance. The employers monitor performance by using this broader performance management system that links: Organization objective, day by day activities, professional development, rewards and incentives. In simple words, appraisal is the assessment of individual performance in a systematic way.Performance can be measured with such factors such as job knowledge, quality and quantity of output, leadership abilities, supervision, dependency, cooperation, judgment, and versatility but performance cannot be measured with past performance of an employee(Ahmad, 2012).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The performance of workers has become important due to the increased concern of human resources and personnel experts about the level of output obtained from workers due to poor remuneration, lack of staff training, delayed promotion and other employee incentives such as bonuses and appreciations. It has been observed especially in Highlife Bakery Abakaliki, that workers show poor attitude towards their jobs and when they are interviewed, their explanations border on the issues of poor remuneration, lack of employees’ advancement training and poor concern of the organization towards employees’ welfare.

From the foregoing, and looking at today’s economic trend, it is evident that the pace of change in our business environment presents fresh challenges daily. Despite these challenges, very few research works have targeted to investigate the impact of employees motivation on organizational productivity in Nigeria, this is the gap this research sought to cover.
