CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  Background of the Study

The rapid evolution of the information communication technology (ICT) constitutes one of today’s major phenomenons with catalytic effect on numerous aspects of social and economical activities. The changes owed to revolution of the information communication technology expansion affect significantly the labour market which is growing continuously (Anastasiadis (2000)).

This revolution has made information and communication technology to be very important to organizations, this why corporate survival is enhanced by information technology revolution (Nwosu 2000:197). These changes diversify the ICT enterprise, occupation areas and affect the professional profit. This gradual development of revolution of the information communication technology has led to the corporate businesses in the developing countries like Nigeria.

The banking sector is also another category of study examines the ICT effect and evolution in a particular business environment like commercial banks in Nigeria, which have seen the deregulation of the banking industries, realized the need to adopt modern information technology. In other for information and communication technology to be effective, it must be trained together with human resource in banks so as to acquire the skills necessary in the banking industries.

For banks to get the best out of their employees, the employees have to be trained and highly skilled work-force in modern information technology. The ever increasing challenges of information technology are met by training and development of requisite skills (Ajaja, 2002:21). Most corporate organization had easily focused only on the changes in technology at the expense of human resources which is paramount. These organizations require the latest model of computer hardware and software and also product machines for the production of goods and services.

They also develop various operating system such as accounting operating system, administrative operating system, engineering operating system etc, in other to achieve corporate goals. With all these, they still achieve corporate goals but with little success because they did not make provision for human resource training and development which lead to the examination of the impact of ICT on human resource development in Zenith Bank plc Enugu. Without training and development, the changes in technology would not make for increased productivity, but rather affect corporate goals (Onodugo, 2000:168)

Statement of the Problem

There are some factors that contribute to human resource training and development in ICT

The problem of human resource training and development in respect to ICT in the banking sector.

The problem of improper ICT training program design as it effect bank human resource development.

The problem of unavailability of a well advanced ICT trainers.

The problem of epileptic power supply with respect to consistent ICT trainers.

  • Objective of the Study

The main objective of the research work is to examine the impact of information and communication technology on human resource in Nigeria banking system on how it can satisfy the customer best.

The specific study objectives are

  1. To evaluate the prospects of ICT on human resource development in Zenith Bank plc.
  2. To evaluate the impact of ICT on human resource in Zenith Bank plc.
  3. To examine weather information communication technology has the fortune of the bank, which means planning for the future.
  4. To find out how ICT impact on human resource compensation.
  5. To determine the impact of ICT on human resource productivity.
  • Research Question

Due to the fast growing impact o information communication technology in Nigeria banking system, the following question will be addressed in the study.

  1. What is the impact of ICT training and development?
  2. What is the impact of ICT on human resource productivity?
  3. What is the impact of ICT on human resource planning?
  4. What is the impact of ICT on recruitment and selection of human resource?
  5. What is the impact of ICT on human resource compensation?
  • Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis was formulated to guide the study.

  1. H1: ICT does not impact positively on human resource training and development.

       H0:  ICT impact positively on human resource training and development.

  1. H1: ICT does not impact positively on human resource productivity.

H0:  ICT impact positively on human resource productivity

  1. Ho: ICT does not impact positively on human resource planning.

H1:  ICT impact positively on human resource planning.

  1. Ho: ICT does not lead to effective recruitment and selection of human resource training and development.

       H1:  ICT lead to effective recruitment and selection of human resource training and development.

  1. Ho: ICT does not make positive impact on human resource compensation.

       H1:  ICT make positive impact on human resource compensation.

  • Significance of the Study

This study contributes immensely to the growth of an organization. Interestingly, it will make customers happy because of the services that would be rendered by well trained human resource and customer care services. Those that will benefit from this study are the, staffs and organization, the students and the customers etc.

The beneficiaries of this study are:

Business Organizations

ICT combines information, knowledge, processes, and technology to provide a foundation for driving efficiencies and fuelling innovation. It is the key to helping organizations of all sizes to connect, collaborate and compete more effectively.

ICT can contribute to business organization as follow: It can:

  • Improve business performance, productivity and profitability through improved system performance.
  • Reduce administrative and back-office operational costs through the convergence of voice, data and video over IP
  • Enable and improve the quality, quantity and access to services from any location by allowing remote access, monitoring and management of systems and applications.
  • Improve customer satisfaction, loyalty and service through the safe and secure deployment of customer-facing solutions.
  • Enhance collaboration and networking among employees, customers and partners by removing the barriers to real-time communication and effective information sharing.
  • Ensure enterprise security and compliance more efficiently at less cost.
  • provide opportunities for businesses to outsource non-core activities so they can focus on their core competencies and reduce in-house technical support requirements.
  • Enable the mobile workforce.
  • Improve work/life balance for employees.
  • Contribute to environmental responsibility.
  • Meet expectations of the new generation of employees in adapting to their communication habits.

*    Also, the business organization will benefit because their management will see the need to train their staffs in modern ICT, not only for the benefits of the staffs but also for the organization. Also, the management and government will also see the need to make human resource training and development an effective result-oriented experience. To this end, they will see the need to provide adequate ICT training program for their employees. An organisation is a group of people who work together towards the same goal.

*     ICT has many uses within organisations, specialised use depend on the nature of the organisation. However, common uses can include:

*     Creating advertisement and promotional materials.

*     Letters

*     Storing customer, stock, membership, employee details

*     Building management

*     Mailing lists

*     Accounts

*     Payroll

Some organisations can require specialist equipment. For example, a supermarket requires the ability to scan barcodes to allow quick stock checks, receipt creation, etc.

Students

The study will also be useful for academic purpose. It will serve as a data bank to those who will carry out related studies in the future. Also, the research finding can provide the basis for further studies.

Customers

Reliability:      Reliability means confidence, it means insurance. It means that customers can trust the product they are receiving is designed, tested and proven to operate under the most demanding conditions with the use of technology.

  • Scope of the Study

Here attention shall be focus on information and communication technology on human resource implementation. In order to conduct an empirical investigation into the adoption of ICT on human resource in Nigeria and will also examine the nature of ICT operation in Zenith Bank Plc Enugu.

1.8  Limitation of the Study

Here are the limitations of the study below:

Inadequate Finance

The study could have been made more extensive if the researcher has included more banks inn the study, but because I cannot afford the additional cost, that is why the study is restricted to Zenith bank plc Enugu.

  1. Another is the attitude of the bank staffs that refuse to complete the questionnaire, which in turn affect the collection of data.
  2. Time Because of the academic work of the researcher, there was no enough time for the study. That is the reason the why study could not be accomplished with the expected time

Information communication is the process of transmitting information from one person to the other.
