CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

One of the primary objectives of every business organization is the production of economic goods and  services  with a view making profit. In fact, no business organization will like to operate at a less. The achievement of these objective depends on the effort and contribution of the managers and subordinates in the organization. Many of the managerial policies and decision are armed at this end.

This is particularly fund in decision making, since they are the plans and strategies for getting the subordinate to accomplish the objectives for which the organization is established. In many cases, these plans and policies involved implicit assumptions about the intrinsic principles at work in organization that could make workers to increase their productivity in order to achieve organization goals.

Indeed, these managerial plans and policies for optimum productivity should be practical as it involves employees in decision making in the organization. In the view of Travis (2007), the essence of company achievement requires that workers be constantly and continuously motivated to put in their best. An important management duty and most relevant to this research work is employee participation in decision making to increase productivity.

This is based on the assumption that workers are the pivot on which every organization involves. The success or failure, growth or stump of any factory depends heavily on the effective involvement of the workers in decision affecting them and their work place. In other words, this will serve as a motivating factor which subsequently induces performance. Every manager realizes that the organizations set goals and objectives can not be achieved if the worker do not perform as much concentration on workers involvement in decision making therefore there is need for involving workers to put in their best, so that, the organization will achieve its objectives among which is the higher productivity or effective firm  performance .

In recent times, there has been an increasing call for workers to change their attitude to work and to increase productivity. This has led to serves of  seminars workshops, conferences, television debates and articles in newspapers and magazines, seeking for motivation factors that will make workers to increase their productivity. This arise form recent observations that there has been high decrease in productivity in an organization in Nigeria. It is seen as sequence of the Nigeria attitudes to work by some authors.

Ejionye (2006), has observed typical Nigeria workers as lazy, indolent and dishonest. While avoiding responsibility, he loves money, wealth and the good thing of life. The view is accepted by some authors who believe that an average Nigeria worker is lously, non_challent and irresponsible. Again Harris (2008), in his speech described the attitude of Nigeria workers “as one of the worst in the world”.

While Arina (2005), emphases that a Nigeria workers is not allergic to work but needed good workers conditions. Many of them have taken into account several interfering factors that have been responsible for lower performance of Nigeria workers. In other words, the most crucial obstacle to effective and efficient employees performance, to a high degree is little or no motivation or total negligence of motivational of employees in decision making.

Wall and Hischeron (2001), employees in decision making is a process by which workers are consulted about and in turn can influence the factor, which shapes their working lives. Employees participation refers to employee involvement in decision making normally made at lower level within the organization. Hierarchy, Wall and Hischeron (2001), this also means the meaningful form of participation in company through which workers are consulted about and in turn influence the factors which shape their working lives.
