PROJECT TOPIC- INFLUENCE OF THE HOME AND THE SCHOOL IN CHILD SOCIALIZATION IN IVO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EBONYI STATE
This study focused on the influence of the home and the school in child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The project specifially aimed at identifying the influence and relationship of the home and the school in child up bringing. To carry out this study, the researcher selected two hundred respondents, both parents and teachers. Questionnaire were distributed to this population to sample their opinion. After analysizing the opinions of the respondents the following findings were made- that the home as the starting point of every child has a major influence on the child as well as the foundation of which the school after builds of some degree of training of parenthood and family education seems necessary. That parent needs the assistance of the school in behaviour modification as an agency for child socialization. That child socialization is a joint relationship of the home and the school. That child socialization is one of the factors that determine the health of the nation, the finding above suggest that effective child socialization requires the joint effort of the home and school. This will lead to a a healthy society and our nation in general. In vie w of certain limitations and constraints encountered by the researcher, some recommendations were made.
Background to the study
The issue of the influence of the home and school in upbringing of children has been one of the great concern in our society today. There are controversies as to whether it is the sole responsibility of the school or home to bring up children. One should first of all understand some important words in the expression like, Socialization, home and school.
Home (family) can be defined as a group of two or more persons related by birth, marriage or adoption and residing together, (lasswell, 1997). Family is the primary social invention that shape us into e human beings. It is a prominent feature of every society. Family prepares future citizens and nurture and sustain adults who are engaged in the day to day business of the society.
In every society, the family is the recognized unit that performs the following functions as a group, child, bearing, socialization, economic role, religions orientation, protection, infection, status, civic responsibilities recreation (Igba, 2003). Besides being closely related to the child, they maintain constant physical contact with them than others.
The child learns his speech language, societal morality, respect for elder as well as persons in authority and a number of civic virtues from his parents and family. Hence, the family is refereed to as the cradle of social virtues. The child derives his initial lessons in co-operation, tolerance self sacrfice, love and affection in the family (Lasswell, 1997).
The school according to Ebonyi. (2001) is a place where teaching and learning is taking place. It is also a place of acquiring knowledge by students and tutors. Through the school education a child’s ideas and attitudes are molded. A good education (school) makes the child a good citizens, while a bad education equally turn him into criminal.
The school being an important agencies of socialization of a child, a well-planned and implemented system of education can produce discipline citizens with good morals. The term socialize or socialization have been derived from the French and latin words “Socialis” and “sociius” meaning companion. Socialization is a situation in which human being live and learn together in group relation affecting their common welfare fit for cooperative group living. (Peter 1992).
According to the Ogburu (1997) page 56, socialization is the process by which the individual learns to conform to the norms of the group. Harry (1990) saw socialization as learning that enables the learner to perform social roles. By Lundbery (2001) socialization is the complex processes of interaction through which the individual learns the habits, skills beliets and standard of judgment that are necessary for his effective participation in social group and communities.
In this context therefore socialization according to Peter (1992) means the process by which a child becomes integrated into the society by adopting to its norms and values, acquiring the necessary skills of social interaction and learning to adopt an acceptable roles. The integration of a child in a society may either be of a negative or positive effect to that very society or child.
This gives room to the individual differences in life styles like, having a human feelings, kindness as against meanness and wickedness. While some learn to be antagonistic arrogant segreative and living a fearful life respectively. Another situation is where some individual exhibit respectful and obedient life while some exhibits disrespective always giving us against always expecting most of these qualities of life
styles of among other depend fully on the kind of orientation, training and environment where the individuals were brought up. In respect to these life styles mentioned above our younger ones should be given a kind of education that will enable them adjust themselves into the societal norms and values they should also be made to be conversant with acquiring necessary skills of societal interaction and learning
to adopt an acceptable life in their environment themselves. Taiwo ( 1990) recommended that the kind of training needed in the life of our younger ones are excepted to be done by the four agencies of child education named below. This is presented as the most important of all education agencies because, it lays the foundation on which other agencies are built. The influence of the home is most pervasive.
The school is specialized in the responsibility of imparting certain skills and capabilities of socializing the child. It also afford the learners to needed opportunities of self improvement. This has duty of continuing the process of socialization started by the school in inculcating into a child a sense of duty to himself and others.
It also affords him the opportunity for playing leadership roles of generally helping to make him a more useful citizen. The state: the state provides abundant opportunities and securities necessary for promotion of education interest. The upbringing of children as said before depends much on adults. It is also pertinent to note that the children at the earliest stage of their life usually meet these adults either in the home or at school.
This means that they are met at the first two agencies of socialization mentioned above. Looking at their functions they are as the most important agencies of child socialization since, they are dealing mainly on the aspect foundation laying in the life style of the child. Taiwo (1990). It is really understandable that the orientation given by parents to their children creates a great impact in the life of their children.
They are also taught the use of some polite languages like excuse me, think you, I am sorry, please etc. The act of democracy, neatness the basic religions values and learning to slow love affection are also inculcated in the home. In fact if the correct attitude is fostered at home the child socialized easily at school.
It also helps a child to live a moderate and has no difficulty with himself working as a member of group society. The school as an educational agent has been seen as a favorite tool to social control always linked to the belief that through its use control over the future could be secured. This to the tune of (Gluesson 1997) where he said that for the concerned with the future of individuals, education could be seen as means to liberty to wealth or to social control.
He also held that for the development of the society whether the concern was the reproduction of the present economic growth or social quality, education holdout to more to come. This entails that no matter the foundation in the home, the education (as one of the agencies of child socialization) is needed to correct the mistakes of the foundation in the home. This means that it will be able to strike a balance needed of the child. Betrand (1998) held that an ideal school is better than a home owning that the school in her expertise is meant to supplement for the deficient found in the child from the home.
The function of the school as an agency of child socialization mentioned above not withstanding, the school development as a matter of fact has not reflected social policy expectation. It has magnifies its fluctuations, which affect the fulfillment of the expected dreams. Reflecting in the comments of Denis (2000) as previous confidence in the future of the whole public sector drains away, so education in
security appears most profound. He also believed that some other Maladjustment in the school performance is due to lack of resources for both the needed condiment and its implements. The objectives of child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area are: Socialization creates in the child the hearing behaviour and the ability to learn.
Socialization helps the child understand social roles. The part played by the home in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area is: The home taught economic roles, such as cooking and hurting etc. The part played by the school in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government area is: The school teaches the child in a way to develop cognitive skills as reading and writing. The relationship between the school and the home in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area is: Parents (home) and teachers (school) are co-parents in the education of the child.

Statement of the problem
Looking at the issue of the influence of the home and the school in child socialization in recent days, it could be seen that the child socialization based on the moral, norms and values(culture) is unfair. There is no more acculturated manner in the life of the children nowadays. As a result there is no more respect to the elders, parents and teachers.
However, the researcher does not know if the home lays the appropriate foundation, or the school taking up the responsibility of imparting the necessary skills and capability of socializing the child and affording him the needed opportunities for self improvement. If this problem is not identified and checked, moral decadence will likely be on the increase.
There will be irresponsible children from the home who will likely cause confusion and havoc in the society. It is high time the government, the school and the individual families rose to their responsibilities. It is the existence of the above situation that motivated the researcher to study the influence of the home and the school in child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area with a view to finding out the relationship between the home and the school in the socialization of the child.
Purpose of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to study the influence of the home and the school in child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area. Specially the study is designed to:
- Find out the objective of child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area.
- Find out the part played by the home in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area.
- Find out the part played by the school in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area.
- Find out the relationship between the home and the school in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area.
Significance of the Study
The study is significant because it would help the entire community in understanding the needs and various processes of socializing a child. Also the study when completed will assist both parents and teachers to choose and select appropriate methods of teaching and imparting knowledge to children in order to be socialized and being useful to the society.
The result of the study would also help the interest of the child to be stimulated for effective actualization of a good citizen and created a healthy society. The study will also help to reduce the capes in child training thereby enhancing a well conducive environment for the benefit of both the young and the old. The study will also assist the child (children) in choosing and initiating the right way of respecting,
greeting the elders, through the teaching and learning of morals, norms and values. At the end of the study (influence of the home and the school in child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area) the respective duties of the two major agencies (home and school) of the socialization will be clearly spelt out.
Scope of the Study
The scope of the study covered only Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, it will be delimited to the teaching, learning and training of a child in order to be socialized with others in the home, school and other social organization.
The following research questions are formulated to guild the study.
- What are the objectives of child socialization in Ivo Local Government Area?
- What is the part played by the home in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area?
- What is the part played by the school in socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area.
- What is the relationship between the school and the home in the socialization of the child in Ivo Local Government Area?
