PROJECT TOPIC : THE INFLUENCE OF THE YORUBA MOTHER TONGUE ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE

ABSTRACT

This paper has covered four aspects of the influence of Yoruba mother tongue on the English language, although the second and the third aspect can be seen as belonging to the same general issue-Error Analysis and contrastive, the four aspects concern: instances of phonetic and phonological influence of the mother tongue  (Yoruba) on English language and Bilingualism. We have been able to identify the aspect influencing the Yoruba learner of English in his/her acquisition of the target language.

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Language is as old as humanity. It is a method through which an individual expresses his feelings and thoughts in a way that could be understood by another person. Language is part of cultural traits which includes things and events, a system that explains almost all the details of human existence in a given linguistic society.

Hence, it is regarded as a vital property of culture which makes communication cheap and easy in our society.

  1. Christopherson (1965:14) affirms that

“… a structure system of arbitrary vocal sounds and sequence of sounds which is used or can be used in interpersonal communication by an aggregation of human beings catalogs the things, events and process in human environment”.

PROJECT TOPIC : THE INFLUENCE OF THE YORUBA MOTHER TONGUE ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Language has the ability to make the production and construction of sentences, ideas and opinions. These characteristics suggest that human language is open and alive. Language is the screen that views culture while culture is the mirror of the language which defines how the language is used.

Therefore, a Yoruba native speaker mostly uses his mother tongue which he has acquired as his first language to demonstrate his linguistic identity. This also means that all Yoruba learners of English will become bilingual, but we know that adults who succeed in achieving  native speaker’s competence in the second language should to an extent reactivate what Lennebery call “latent language structure” (Baldeh 1990:20).

The influence of mother tongue on the English language is part of the development of the learners’ personality and intelligence. This further narrows the scope of this study to the basic linguistic parameter in language acquisition and its usage, these include ethnic, educational and linguistic. Under ethnic environment the dialect variance in Yoruba ethnic groups do not just manifest in their mother tongue but also in their learning of English. Psychologically, the proper development of the child is closely with the continuous use of his mother tongue which is his first language. To ignore this familiar language (MT) and begin to teach the child in a foreign and unfamiliar language, second language (TL) takes the child from home thus, putting him among strangers.

Language whether in the form of speech or writing or any other medium, is an abstract notion which involves a speaker or a listener. The speaker who has a message mentally translates his ideas, words within the code he shares with his intended hearer. Then, he further chooses the appropriate letter combination from the orthography to present his message phonetically or graphologically as the case may be, and expects to be understood. Where the speaker fails to present his message phonetically, logically and correct in his target language, it then means that there is an error. This is the case of mother tongue (MT) influence in a second language (L2) acquisition, such as the use of the English language by a Yoruba speaker.

1.1 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The main purpose of this study is to identify the influence of Yoruba mother tongue on English language. It further explores the depth of Yoruba dialect as a case study.

1.2 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The researcher made use of textbooks, library, internets, as well descriptive method in her format.

1.3  PLAN OF STUDY

This research paper has five chapters. In chapter one, the introduction takes a look at the background to the study. It further exposes the relevance of language to the passed society.

In chapter two, the researcher uses literature review to showcase her framework, it also reveals the influence of Yoruba mother tongue on English.

In chapter three, the researcher showcases error analysis and bilingualism.

In chapter four bring to line light the instances of phonetic and phonological of Yoruba mother tongue on English language and contrastive Analysis whereas chapter five is the final conclusion and bibliography.

1.4 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
