INTRODUCTION

Background  of the study

A g r i c u l t u r e is a field of human endeavor t h a t stigmatizes N i g e r i a a s an a g r a r i a n economy and has the unique r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of p r o v i d i n g employment o p p o r t u n i t i e s t o more t h a n 70 p e r c e n t of h e r p o p u l a t i o n ; supplies food and f i b r e p r o d u c t s f o r our exploding p o p u l a t i o n ; s u p p l i e s rnrJ m a t e r i a l s f o r t h e development of i n d u s t r i a l and housing s e c t o r s and e a r n s s u b s t a n t i a l f o r e i g n exchange f o r s o c i a l , p o l i t i c a l and economic development.

 

For about two decades now both S t a t e and Federal Governments i n t h e c o u n t r y have been showing much concern i n a g r i c u l t u r e as w e l l a s developing v a r i o u s p o l i c i e s and programmed towards an wholesome a g r i c u l t u r a l development.

Many e d u c a t i o n i s t s have been e x p r e s s i n g t h e i r b e l i e f s t h a t th.2 development o f t h e c o u n t r y ‘ s a g r i c u l t u r e is dependent upon conscious investment i n education. Thus it is argue t h a t t h e p r o v i s i o n of e d u c a t i o n i n a g r i c u l t u r e is a s t r a t e g y i n e n r i c h – i n g youths with knowledge, s k i l l s and a t t i t u d e s t h a t would ensure t h e t r a n s f o r m a t i o n of their environments, This goes t o b u t t r e s s t h e o b s e r v a t i o n IKOKU (1990) made, t h a t the c e n t r a l f o c u s of educational p o l i c y v i s – s a – v i s a g r i c u l t u r a l e d u c a t i o n is on t h e development o f t h e r i c h human r e s o u r c e s of t h e c o u n t r y s o t h a t t h e m a t e r i a l r e s o u r c e s could be f u l l y tapped, Education i n a g r i c u l t u r e is :IS o l d a s h i s t o r y of c d u c n t i o n i t s e l f .

It s t a r t e d as nn a s p e c t of t r a d i t i o n a l v o c a t i o n a l educ a t i o n w i t h its e d u c a t i v e process largely on a p p r e n t i c e s h i p viced, The would-be f a r m e r s got t h e i r t r a i n i n g by understudying ceders who were themselves~s t r a d i t i o n a l competent f a r m e r s (~Alfred, 1901), Agriculture is today o broad f i e l d of s t u d y i n a l l levels of e d u c a t i o n a l programmer, a l t h o u g h it was f i r s t i n t r o d u c e d as an i n t e g r a l p a r t of r u r a l Mancunian and nature s t u d i e s i n N i g e r i a n Primary and S e c o n d a r y S c h o o l s , J u s t r e c e n t l y , r e v o l u t i o n a r y changes had o c c u r r e d i n t h e country’s e d u c a t i o n a l system so much t h a t a g r i c u l t u r e becomes an academic s u b j e c t a t a l l levels of e d u c a t i o n i n N i g e r i a under t h e New N a t i o n a l P o l i c y on Education.

Today, a g r i c u l t u r a l s c i e n c e is a compulsory academic s u b j e c t o f f e r e d by a l l p u p i l s i n both Primary and J u n i o r Secondary Schools i n Nigeria. In Primary S c h o o l s t h e t e a c h i n g of a g r i c u l t u r a l Science is t LI acc12mplish th e  following oh j e c t i v c s : ( a ) To e n a b l e t h e p u p i l s t n p a r t i c i p a t e and i n t c r p r e t emt h e i r environment i n a s c i e n t i f i c way; (5) To develop i n the s c h o o l c h i l d r e n a p o s i t i v e a t t i t u d e and i n t e r e s t i n a g r i c u l t u r e and an a p p r e c i a t i o n f o r t h e problems i n v o l v e d ; (c) To expose primary s c h o o l p u p i l s t o modern methods of c u l t u r e ; (d! To develop an understanding of t h e c o n t r i b u t i o n nf a g r i c u l t u r e t o the ccononl\/ of t h e c o u n t r y and the community;

(c) To develop an u n d e r s t a n d i n g and approach::nation of a g r i c u l – t u r e a s a v o c a t i o n a l as well a s an a v o c a t i o n a l i n t e r e s t ; (f) To develop t h e i n t e r e s t of the p u p i l s i n creative a c t i v i – t i e s (Grade Two Teachers’ S y l l a b u s , 1974).

T h e r e f o r e t h e achievement of a g r i c u l t u r a l Science objectives a s at-lined above weld i n p a r t go a long way i n centralizing t h e o v e r a l l o b j e c t i v e s of primary e d u c a t i o n i n the c o u n t r y which a r e as f o l l o w s :

Hence, a g r i c u l t u r e cannot be l e f t out of effect t e a c h i n g i n primary s c h o o l s i n t h e country if we a r e t n s u r v i v e i n f u t u r e . The amount of modern technology available i n t h e areas of a g r i c u l t u r a l p r o d u c t i o n is s o s o p h i s – t i c a t e d t h a t t o d a y Le age Lon~t r a d i t i o n n l me hods are Tar becoming o b s o l e t e . An e f f e c t i v e u n d e r s t a n d i n g , a p p r e c i a t i o n and use of t h e vr!riots modern t e c h n o l o g i c a l i n p u t s such as h e r b i c i d e s , i n s e c t i c i d e s , f e r t i l i z e r s , etc,, t o i n c r e a s e agricultural product nativity r e q u i r e basic a g r i c u l t u r a l e d u c a t i o n.

It is t h e aim of t h e government t h a t a l l primary s c h o o l s i n t h e countryside j o i n t h e c u r r e n t nation-wide programmer of mass p a r t i c i – p a t i o n i n an o r i e n t a t i o n ta~nrd:; fond p r o d u c t i n n , hence, an improvement i n t h e roaching of a g r i c u l t u r a l s c i e n c e at p r ma r y s c h o o l l~bevel comes imp e r a t i v e (Na t i o n a l P o l i c y on Education – Revised, 1981).

Suffice it t o note thnt if proper t e a c h i n g of a g r i c u l t u r a l scintilla is t o be given t o primary s ,,,loo p u p i l s f o r a Chan ir, n_tit.~lea n d inters t , thr? ,2,,tiers must d e m o n s t r a t e sound knowledge, s k i l l s and a t t i t u d e s i n agriculture. According -to Torrie (1905) i n s t r u c t i o n can BO e f f e c t i v e only when handled by t r a i n e d t e a c h e r s w i t h t h e r i g h t a t t i t u d e , knowledge and s k i l l s .

A t p r e s e n t , a l l t h e scratch i n primary s c h o o l s i n Akwa Ibom State are grade two teachers and the bulk af thcsc3 t e a c h e r s a r e females. It is n o t an over statement s a y i n g t h a t they are t e c h n i c a l l y and professionally incompetent i n t h e t e a c h i n g of a g r i c u l t u r a l science as they were only t r a i n e d i n Home Economics i n a l t e r n a t i v e t o a~agricultural s c i e n c e w h i l e i n Teachers1 T r a i n i n g Colleges, It is g l a r i n g t h a t t h i s category of Te~chert e a c h a g r i c u l t u r a l science c o n c e p t s a n d p r i n c i p l e s based on t h e i r p e r s o n a l Spencerian and t r a d i t i o n a l beli2fs and s u p e r s t i t i o n s .

T h i s s i t u a t i o n is most l i k e l y t o make primary s c h o o l t e a c h e r s have more problems w i t h t h e t c n c h i n g of a g r i c u l t u r a l s c i e n c e , It is t h e r e f o r e freemasonry t o f i n d ways nf h e l p i n g both the per-and in-service priory school t e a c h e r s a c q u i r e and/ n- improve t h e i r knowledge, skil-1s and a t t i t u d e s i n agriculture u r c t o enhance e f f e c t i v e t e a c h i n g of t h e s u b j e c t i n line w i t h the o b j e c t i v e s o f t h e ~?E[J[ Cincinnati P o l i c y on Ed u c a t i o n .
