PROJECT TOPIC- MOTOR PARK ACTIVITIES ON SELECTED SOIL AND AIR POLLUTANTS IN ABAKALIKI

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Global industrialization and human social and agricultural activities have an effect on environmental pollution and the global ecosystem. This corruption of the ecosystem has a negative effect on human health and on all living organisms. Growing industrialization and environmental pollution form technology have started to affect human health (Azan et al., 2000). Air pollution is aesthetically offensive and can be a genuine health hazard to humans as well as to vegetation (Hall, 1972).

Pollution of the environment with toxic mental has increased dramatically since the onset of the industrial revolution (Earth Summit, 2000). Soil pollution by heavy metal is also a problem of concern. Air pollution is one of the greatest shame of the city. No environment is safe as particulate matter and harmful gasses travel distance through the effects of biotic and abiotic factors (RSC, 2001).

Motor parks activities have the potential to generate a substantial amount of pollution. In some cases emission, from combustion engines represents the largest air quality impact associated with motoring. The prominentair quality issues related to motor parks are C02, N02PM and H2S. Although carbon dioxide is non toxic to human but is a major green house gas and motor vehicle emission are important contributor to the growth of C02 concentration in the atmosphere which causes severe environmental impact (Sax, 2001)

The motor park activities that will adversely affect the environment include, motor vehicle movement which continuously burn fossil fuel such as petrol, gasoline with exhaust waste like C02, C0, PM, N02, this raises air pollution and affects human health (Akpan and Ndoke,(1999). Hawking activities in motor park areas are contributory factors to waste and anthropogenic green house gas emission.

Housekeeping and vehicle movement trigger dusts which can be allergic to ma. Some particulate matter also occur naturally from tornadoes, volcanoes, dust storms, forest and grassland and other ecological niche (Perry, 1984). Uneducated smoking by motor park workers and other passengers are significantly associated with higher odds for great impact in air quality.

PROJECT TOPIC- MOTOR PARK ACTIVITIES ON SELECTED SOIL AND AIR POLLUTANTS IN ABAKALIKI

1.1    MAIN OBJECTIVES

The main objective of this work is to evaluate motor park activities on selected soil and air pollutants in Abakaliki.

1.2    SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

–        To measure the air concentration of C0, N02, NH3, H2S in motor park

–        To assess heavy metal concentration in soils within the vicinity of motor park.
