PROJECT TOPIC- PACKAGING AS AN INSTRUMENT OF EFFECTIVE SALES PROMOTION A CASE STUDY OF SOME SHOE MANUFACTURING FIRM IN ABA

ABSTRACT

This research work investigated as an instrument for effective sales promotion in the marketing of some shoe manufacturing firms in Aba. It is obvious that the Nigeria economy is experiencing problems. The complexities and intensive competition in promotion and distribution policies among firms in a depressed economy has resulted in a backlog of inventories that means sales are low. These firms are constantly faced with survival strategies and all aspect of marketing mix contribute to this survival and packaging plays the most important role. Therefore, the researcher tried to investigate what appropriate packaging strategy the firms would sue to minimize damages along the channel of distribution, with stand competition and increase their sales volume. The researcher use simple percentage in research methodology in chapter three and administered six questionnaires which served as the sample size. The analysis of the study was based on the research questions which based on relationship of packaging and sales volume, packaging and product identification, packaging and damages along the distribution channel. The findings were that packaging increases sales volume and profitability and that packaging assists in the product identification and reduces damages and reduces damages and distribution cost along distribution channels.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Education sector in Nigeria is a big industry. Big in terms of number of people who work in it. The value of persons served, the amount of works involved, the amount of money spent and the purpose it serves. But education unlike other industries is not profit making venture specifically and therefore equipped entirely by Federal, State and Local Government Areas and other private bodies or individuals, and community as well. All governments worldwide recognize and thus appreciate the invaluable role education play in national development.

Towards this end, various policies and programmes aimed at the advancement of education are being developed by many nation a cross the world. In Nigeria therefore education has been adopted as an instrument of excellence for achieving national development. The period between 1930 and 1950 may be regarded as the age of voluntarism in southern Nigeria education. Many communities and individuals in southern Nigerian saw western education as the key to human development and they were determined to send their children, wards and

relations to school at any cost. Many village or clan unions were formed by young men who left big cities in search of white Kola job.  These unions were able to raise funds for Local or Community Schools at their various communities. As these efforts continued, some communities assumed direct responsibility for the provision of equipment like staffing and managing community schools without turning to the missions for assistance. There is no doubt that this community participation in education, which took the form of establishment of schools and provision of equipment, granting of scholarship awards and as well motivating teachers contributed greatly to the expansion of education not only in Eastern Nigeria but in the country as a whole.

Moreover, the participation of various town unions, communities and ethnic groups in the provision of equipment to secondary education during this period was an indication of the zeal with which the Nigerian peoples were pursuing education, secondary education do not operate under the profit motive, the same competitive spirit which private enterprises should, is lacking in those who manage and administer the school. The only possible competition which may be observed amongst school administrators is that which attempts to improve the condition of service, thus, enhancing the educational performance for the boys and girls under their charge.

The idea of provision of equipment in secondary education is generally concerned with the provision of equipment for effective and efficient teaching and learning. The equipment includes provision of infrastructural facilities like conducive classroom, chalkboard, personnel, conductive environment, well equipped laboratories, art studio, home laboratories, music auditorium, security of the school plant, paying for the electricity, water supply, transportation, communication, provision of the general administration of the educational

programme, payment of salaries of tutorial and non-tutorial staffs and payment of other facilities and services such as purchasing and supplying of laboratories and general maintenance. It also includes provision of bursary units; scholarship scheme and academic research centers especially for post-graduates and under-graduates students as well as lectures in university and other institution. The provision of equipment in secondary education in Ebonyi state depends on the number of factors namely: the financial capability of the community, the

motivation of the community, the infrastructural, financial and manpower development of Federal, state and local government, the competition of other sectors and the nature of the sources of revenue for educational system. The financial resources allocated to the educational sector represent a cost of the economy because they would have been used for purposes. If the equipment provided lags behind the demand for education, then the standard of educational system will not achieve it desired objectives and therefore, leads to the falling standard of education.

The community and the general public own and support the school, so, there is need for them to be regularly informed about the progress of the educational programmes. At the same time, the government whose representative on the spot are the school administrator and the teachers that controls the school. They interpret and implement government policies on educational matters. It is therefore necessary that the community recognize the role of the teacher and the school. The public and the school collectively influence and shape the behaviour of

the youths. For this reasons both the school and the community should realize the need for co-operation and mutual understanding. Opportunities should be created for the two parties to exchange view on policies, means and ends. Their will only be possible if there is a good community relationship for security and other purposes. In Ohaukwu Local Government Area, the community is composed of numerous smaller, communities with various facilities that affect education. These communities include: religious and civil organizations

like “age grade” clubs and associations. These may provide recreational health and sanitation facilities in the area. The adult members of these organization also provide really, role models for behaviour modification in the youth. The school therefore, needs to study these communities, collect some relevant data on them and use them for planning the educational programmes. Ukeje, et al (1992), maintained that school administrators should seek information about community. Population it is also necessary to know the numerical strength of the

community as well as their population structure. What proportion of the members of the community are children of the school age? What proportion belongs to the middle and productive age bracket? And what proportion are old men and women who have passed the productive period of their lives. This data will help the administrator to make realistic expectation of the community and also understands the strain and pressure that will affect their ability to support the school. Financially and in the provision of equipment. They cannot give

that what they do not have Rather, poor community will have problems in providing their school with the basic facilities that they need. A fairly accurate knowledge of the equipment provided by the community will help the school adjust its demand on the community.

Statement of the Problem

In a formal educational setting, the child is trained to serve the community. Therefore it is expected that the community should help in training the child according to the need of the community. According to Ezegbe (1991), the community in the spirit of co-operate responsibility (Esprit De Crop) can serve the school through offering protections and security, school board, scholarship, provision of equipment, transportation services, provision of infrastructure and educational facilities. After the Nigeria civil war, both primary and

secondary schools in the former East central state were taken over by the East central government. Along with the control of schools, the government has greatly encourage different communities to build schools in their areas. Many primary and secondary schools have therefore been set up in response to government directives and their support among other factors is required for effective administration. There is doubt in some minds as regards to the degree or extent of community participation or involvement in the provision of secondary education to enhance teaching and learning in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State in particular.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to find out the extent of community participation in the provision of secondary education equipment to enhance teaching and learning in Ohaukwu L.G.A. This study specifically ascertained:

  1. The extent the secondary education in Ohaukwu Local Government Area relate with the community were there are located or sited.
  2. The extent of community provision of equipment to secondary education.
  3. The role of the government in the provision of secondary education equipment.

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in the fact that a fairly accurate knowledge of the equipment provided by the community will help the school adjust its demand on the community. These infrastructures and facilities, which enhances effective teaching and learning in classrooms, libraries, laboratories workshop, play field, school farms, gardens, as well as provision of water and sanitation. Emphasis should be lead to ensure that these facilities are provided in the appropriate quantity, size, and quality to meet the minimum standard for promoting any meaningful teaching and learning in secondary education system. Government could assure full responsibility for the provision of equipment in secondary education.

Research Questions

The following research questions were generated to guide this study:

  • What are the forms of relationship that exist between the school and the community?
  • What are the contributions of the community in the provision of secondary education equipment?
  • What are the government’s efforts in the provision of secondary education equipment?
