CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Research on students’ hooliganism has beingthe interest of educational sociologists andpsychologists experts. An examination of theNigerian Tertiary Institutions especially Ebonyi State university students today would reveal theuse of dangerous weapons, sexual harassment, dwindling in the standard of the undergraduate, uncommitted and less dedicated lecturers to mentionfew. Raufu in Pemede (2000) reported that the problem of secret cult with its associated problemlike killing, extortion, rape, maiming, stealing andother social vices in our tertiary institutions havepermanently imprinted the issue in the mind of theaverage Nigeria. Odubunmi (2008) pointed out thatmany members of the society including the highplaced one tend not to worry about these twopathogenic and virulent school diseases and so on.

The question is, if education is regarded as theprocess by which the new members of the societyare equipped with acceptable skills, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, moral and values of the society then what model of moral standard are weinculcating through the process of education? Since hooliganism is the order of the day among students in Nigeria tertiary institutions especially in Ebonyi state university.

In line with hooliganism amongst students, Ogunsanya (2000) reported that Cultism on campusemerged as a result of social unacceptable behavior of media explosion, importation of foreign culture, the internet and junk magazine inclusive whichoverwhelm the Youths so that they fall prey to their effect. In view of this Mohammed (2004) assertedthat the level of hooliganism among the students oftertiary institutions has risen very highly. It is acommon phenomenon to see our students (male andfemale) conducting themselves in manner notdifferent from what tout do. In the same vein,Badejo (2004) quoted Oyediran (1996) opined thatsecret cult menace in our universities might not beunconnected with drug which some students use.

Oni (2005) in his thesis reported that aggression hasthe second high effect on cult membership. Thus, aggression account for 0.5% ofthe total effect of cult membership. On this note,Holloway (2009) explains that the view thataggression or violence is mindless, random, orinexplicable, has been seriously questioned. Twoalternatives but opposed conceptions of humanaggression have been offered instead, one suggeststhat human violence is based on evolutionarymechanism for regulating social conduct. The otherproposes that human societies impose stresses whichin turn produce aggression as an abnormal response.

According to Udoh (1999), moral decadence, an act of deviance in Nigerian tertiary institutions system has reached a worrisome state that all stake holders in the education industry are in the search for possible solution. He opined that cultism amines partly from lack of opportunity for sporting activities. A reflection of the colonial school years reminds of an ideal school environment where students were well behaved according to laid down norms. Tertiary institutions were places where the character of the adolescents was modeled. The adolescents in school were trained to develop self-control, character orderliness and efficiency.
