ABSTRACT

This research titled, “Perceived Impediment to Family Planning practiced Among Parents in Izzi Local Government area of Ebonyi State” this research is aimed examining if religious be perceived impediment of family planning practice among parent in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, if cultural practice be perceived as impediment family planning practice among parent in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, if level of education be perceived as impediment family planning practice among parent in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, if affordability be perceived as impediment family planning practice among parent in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The researcher adopted descriptive research design and data ware collected and analyzed based on the analysis it was recommended that it is thus advocated that campaign should by carried out to parent to sensitize them on the implication of culture, religion, education, and affordability to family planning, government should try and formulated health policy that will enable family planning, the Ministry of Health should try and implement the government health policy so that the rural dwellers can also benefit from it and government should enlighten non-educated parent on the needs of family planning.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Family planning has attracted attentions all over the world due to its reverence in decision making, population growth and development. Samuel (2010) defined family planning as the practice that helps individuals or couples to attain certain objectives such as avoiding unwanted pregnancy, bring about wanted babies at the right time, regulating the interval between pregnancies, controlling the time at which birth occurs in relation to the ages of parents and determining the number of children in the family.

Family planning is a means of reproductive health (Okor, 2002). In-spite of the cry in and out Nigeria about family planning or birth control, many people are still confused about its meaning, the methods involved, the disadvantages and the factor hindering it’s wide application in Nigeria (Ezeah, 2004). According to free Encyclopedia (2013) family planning is of birth control and other techniques to implement such plans which include sexuality education prevention and management of sexuality transmitted infections, preconception counseling and management of infertility.

It further conceptualizes that family planning is educational, comprehensive medical or social activities which enable individuals to determine freely the number and spacing of their children and to select the means by which this may be achieved Brown (2006). Practices because they are linked to the world communication and transportation network which carry ideas and messages on conceptive use.

Family planning has been helping mankind all over the world, but some couples in the societies do not practice family planning due to religious practice, cultural practice, level of education and affordability of the service. Akor, (2002). Son preference in Igbo societies is shown when married couples with female children shun family planning so that they will be able to raise male children who are accorded more importance than females because males propagate family name, property and inheritance laws which limit the right of females and can reinforce son preference Chidi, (2007).

Elegonye (2003) saw culture as a determinant of family planning practice, community norm prescribe how much autonomy individual has in making family planning decision. Culture is an important factor influencing the choice of family planning among couples. How Women’s level of education determine her practice of family planning. WHO (1993) stressed that most women who are not educated has no knowledge of family planning practice to increased in child mortality and this has been linked to increased in maternal child mortality.

But educated one has reproductive right to decide freely and responsibly the number, spacing and timing of their children and to have other necessary information regarding reproductive right. Chidi (2000) noted that education is a determinant of awareness of family planning practice among women in Nigeria. United Nations (1997) identifies religion as a factor influencing couples choice of family planning.

Dixon M. (1999) opined that religious believers might choose to avoid certain methods of family planning, such as birth control pill, in an effort to lives according to the teaching of their religion which hinder their practices. Akor (2001), stressed on the family planning affordability on the coupes level of income. Obum (2009) noted that some forms of contraception, such as minor surgery (like vasectomy), carry a fairly significant amount of one’s time and is very cost as compared to other options, such as condom to the calendar cycle methods which are less expensive; hence couples engage in them.

Statement of the Problem

The Nigerian annual rate of population growth is high as 3.5% with a total fertility rate of 6.0 lifetime birth per woman (Federal Offices of Statistics, 1990). The choice of family planning depends on a complicated mixture of educational, cultural, religious and Affordability influences. In most developing countries like Nigeria, which Ebonyi State in exclusive remain high with poor health conditions, inadequate food, environment in peril, and economic herder ship.

Only a few couples limit the size of their families against the National Population Policy Objective of No: 4.3:4, that is to reduce the number of children a women has in life time from 6 to 4. (Isiogo 2002) identified family planning problems as “generic” barriers to the practice of contraceptive methods in Nigeria and grouped them into educational, cultural, religious and affordability doctorial prejudice, educational and fear of side effect. Cultural, religious is based sex selection.

In Ebonyi State, especially in Izzi land, it was observed that man have two or three wives and this wives have 8 to 10 children which they cannot care for. Despite the jingle that has been going on, that couples should get children that they can carter for. Most of them do abandoned their wife in the hospital, do not take care of their children probably because they have many wives and many children.

Furthermore, it was also observed that most of the woman in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State do give birth all most yearly. As there are giving birth before 6 months, there are pregnant again. This is worrisome and has led to this present study hence, to found out the perceived impediment to family planning practices among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.  

Purpose of the Study

          The main purpose of this study was to investigate the perceived impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State: Specifically, the study sought to determine:

  • If religious be perceived as impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
  • If cultural practice be perceived as impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
  • If level of education be perceived as impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
  • If affordability be perceived as impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Scope of the Study

The study focused on perceived impediment to family planning practice among parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The study covered all the parents in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. This study equally covered religion, level of education, culture and affordability as variables under this study.

Significance of the Study

The study will be important to the government, non-governmental organization, heath educators, health officers and all the parents especially in Izzi Local Government of Ebonyi State. The study will help government to have more strong policies that make couples to adhere to the policy of having only four children.

It will help non-governmental organization to help to promote the teaching of family planning to married couples. It will help the health officers to teach women especially during antenatal visit, the benefits of the family planning methods. It will serve as a references point to other researchers who may wish to carry out research in this area.
