PROJECT TOPIC- PROBLEMS AFFECTING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF READING IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OHAUKWU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Reading is the process of acquiring   language, ideas or thoughts, communicate   as   well   as   the   mutual   sharing   of information.  It is also a complex cognitive process of deeding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning. It is a means of language acquisition, means of communication and of sharing information   and   ideas.    Like   all   languages, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experience, attitude and language community which is culturally and socially situated.

In addition, reading requires creativity and critical analysis, because reading is such a complex process, it cannot be controlled or restricted to one or two interpretations. There are no concrete laws in reading but allows readers an escape to produce their own products introspectively. This promotes deep exploration of texts during interpretation. Readers use varieties of reading strategies to assist with decoding (to translate symbols into sounds) or visual representation of speech and comprehension.

They should also use contextual clues to identify the meaning of unknown words and equally integrate the words they have read into their existing frame work of knowledge or schema. It is not only the ability to recite the letters of the alphabet or to pronounce the words in the text and it does not stop at just being able to answer literal questions, recall stated information, this implies that meaning is not found in the text alone but the reader has to make inferential and critical meaning out of the material.

Therefore, reading cannot take place without comprehension. Reading activity has been used to achieve some aims and objectives and to develop important skills. So, we have many reasons for reading which include; reading to acquire knowledge, reading for information, reading to avoid danger, reading for relaxation and so many other reasons for reading. For one to make a meaningful reading, he or she has to develop the skill that facilitates reading which has to do with the ability to read at specific speed rate, vary it when it is necessary, infer meaning from the context and respond with your own opinion to showcase the view of the writer.

People understand reading in different perspectives. Some may say that it is a means of getting meaning from certain combination of letters; others may’ equally view it as a way of giving the significance intended by the writer to the graphic symbols by relating them to their own experiences including other people’s view. Reading deals with meaningful reaction to printed symbols, an interaction process which has to do with the previous and prior knowledge of the reader and the writer’s idea. Comprehension is determined by reader’s interactive variables with that of the text which has to do with his interest, his reading purpose, knowledge of the topic as well as his ability in foreign languages. It is all about the combined activities of eyes and the .brain (Legge, Mansfield and Chung, 2001).

We   have different strategies of  reading   which   includes, scanning, preview, note taking as well as close reading of the text. Also there are factors that hinder effective reading which Includes; sub-vocalization, lack of concentration, regression and lack of comprehension. So, to achieve the goals of reading, one has to maintain constant focus on    constructing meaning throughout the process, A skilled reader has to reflect on reading process and ask guiding questions such as:

Why am I reading this text?

How close do I need this text?

What information do I want to gain from it?

This can help an effective reader to remain focus in his reading activities.

It is annoying that some teachers are not proficient readers

and cannot teach reading to their students. Though some teachers are skilled but they lack the strategies of teaching reading to their students while most students encounter difficulty in reading as a result of poor teaching of reading by some teachers. The national assessment of educational progress (NEAP 2006) results.

Nationally and for each state, dearly demonstrate we still are not doing what is needed to help our older students build the reading skills they will need to deal with increasingly complex high school courses

Teachers should guide students on how to carry out reading activities as cited in Torgeson(2007)

Literacy instruction at the high school level should support students to continue developing reading fluency; improving vocabulary knowledge; developing higher level reasoning and thinking skills and reading comprehension strategies, and increasing student motivation and engagement with reading and writing.

Tovan, (2000) equally stated that “students need to realize that the skills, comprehension requirements and understanding of text structure involves with and they need to use effective learning strategies.

It is necessary for both teachers and students to make a preparation and have a good knowledge of what reading is about. For one to have a good reading habit, he has to read Exactly what is on the printed  page,  do  not skip any word or one word  for another,  pronouncing  words correctly with per pronunciation of words as they appeared on the passage.

PROJECT TOPIC- PROBLEMS AFFECTING TEACHING AND LEARNING OF READING IN SOME SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OHAUKWU LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Students may find it easier to speak but reading has imposed a lot of problem on some. The technicality of bringing words together  and producing them in such a manner to make a complete meaning is a big problem to students. No matter the complexity of reading, it is expected that one should shy away from it.

So, the problem of this research is a study on the problems that affects the teaching and learning of reading in some selected secondary schools in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this study is to identify the problems affecting teaching   and   learning   of reading   in some selected   secondary schools in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The   study   is   meant   to   determine   the   reasons   for   the uncontrolled rate of reading failure among students, which can be attributed to the following:

  1. Inadequate preparation on the side of teachers
  2. being ignorant to what reading is
  3. The negative effect of technological   advancement such   as Internet, television, videos and games and so on.
  4. Poor teaching and reading methodology.

All these has contributed  immensely to the difficulties as encountered   in   reading   activities   by  senior  secondary  school Students in  some selected schools  in Ohaukwu Local  Government Area. They are the basis through which the research questions are formulated.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study takes care of problems facing the teaching and learning of reading which will help students, parents, teachers as well as curriculum experts to treat reading as an important part of language.

It will also help students to develop a good, habit of reading and have a positive attitude toward reading. It will equally help teachers to employ good strategies in teaching students to learn how to read. Parents will also learn to help their children limit the time spent doing other things rather reading. The finding will be very important to the curriculum planners and the ministry of education to provide teaching materials to guide teachers and equally equip students in their learning of reading seminars and workshops will also play significant roles in equipping students and teachers on the current strategies of teaching learners to read and reading to learn by students.

 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The research was carried on five selected secondary schools in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The students in SSI were used including all the English teachers in those schools were distributed with questionnaires in order to elicit information on the nature and the process of teaching reading habit to secondary school students in Ebonyi State.

RESEARCH QUESTION

To find out the major problems affecting the teaching and learning, the following are the question asked:

  1. Does the knowledge of what reading is in any way affect its reading?
  2. What is the link between the teacher’s preparation and the learning of reading by students?

iii. What is the effect of watching videos and -chatting on the internet on the learning of reading by students?

  1. How does the method of teaching affects it learning?

v. Does the time allotted to the teaching of reading enhance good learning of it?
