PROJECT TOPIC-  PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH PRE-MARITAL SEX AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IKWO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EBONYI STATE.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1  BACKGROUND OF HE STUDY

Pre-marital sex among secondary schools students has been increasing in our schools for past decades. According to Nwachi (1984), stated that pre-marital sex can be described as having sex outside Wedlock, which usually lead to pre-marital pregnancies that prevents students from completing their secondary education. Added to this, Kristin (1980), posted that premarital sex is that type of sex that exist or occurs before marriage. And also can termed as the indulgence into sex which occurs before marriage and without the consent of the both parents.

According to Grinder (1978), noted that today pre-marital sex has become a wide problem in our secondary schools. He also states that it has been one of the social problem in Nigerian Educational systems militating against the goals and objectives of educational planning today. Beaker (1991) and Herford (1986) presented that many well meaningful personalities in Nigeria are disturbed about this serious ills in our schools and so have concerned themselves very much with ways and means of curbing these influences in our school system.

Robert (1978) stated that the problem of pre-marital sex among students is due to lack of basic information on young people’s knowledge, attitudes and practices restricted to a small scale surveys often questionable validity. As a result the researcher intends to go into this social problem with a view to find its causes in secondary schools in Ikwo local government area of Ebonyi State, and suggest some useful measures that will help check it’s further spread that however, it has motivated the researcher who is a native of Arochukwu in Abia State who lives and was brought up there, to be interested in the study. The

researcher has witnessed the rate that students get indulged into sex and the consequences that follow it, which leads to high rate of school drop-out in the area. Apart from the problem faced by the students themselves, their parents and the society in which they find themselves have enough reason to encourage the researcher to initiate this social problem into his research findings of pre-marital sex. The experience of this mishope includes the failure of these students to complete their secondary education programme as a result of the consequences attached to sex. The failure to assist their parents

financially, when the get old, the difficulties it brings upon educational planning, and then together add to the problem of unemployment in this country. The problem of  pre-marital is a serous social phenomenon that should be left without our concern parents, teachers, and members of the public have complained bitterly about the difficulties in situation that this has created. The problem has limited the achievements of social educational mobility. Heasman ( 1998) Also, Costin (1980), added that the problem of pre-marital sex has deposited the greatest problem on parents who from the onset expect

their children to be responsible and to help then when they are old. The attitude of most Nigerians toward education is guided toward specific ends which includes the acquisition of prestige and financial security. The problems created by the students for themselves in a wastage to the government which provide fund to supply necessary facilities are not fully utilized, they became a wastage in the sense that the involved students, who because of one problem or other, drop out of school could not make of their share of the facilities. In Ebonyi State in general and Ikwo local government area in particular, this has been a very serious problem. The occurrences do not only affect the government but also the students’ opportunity to learn and to progress. Indeed several

reasons culminate to this pre-marital sex. The blame may come from the students themselves, their parents, school, or peer group influences. A female student may be pregnant of many things she does, that is to say that she may have many male friends which she eventually engages in illicit sex that will result to pregnancy. This is because the students have no knowledge sex education. To them having male friend and engaging in sexual practice is a natural may of life that they feel many not be neglected. By the time they realize their wrongful activities they are already a mess to their parents, the

school and the society at large. This at times put some girls off their senses because of the humiliations they received of the public. Their ignorance always jeopardize their future, because when they sold their pride before the public or when they get pregnanted hey drop-out of school and the chances of going back to school is very slim. Most sadly, those responsible for their unrealistic act, often abandon the victims without giving any assistance of any form. Some assess students who do not want to study may even use the condition; they put themselves as a reason to go out of school.

The parents also have some share of the blame. Some of them are not educated, as to know the basic requirements for their children. Some are poor and cannot afford all that the child needs. This send the child out looking for such things and the result of this, is always misbehavior is because the child has to satisfy the person who has provided her the needs, with illegal sex, the parents should teach their children sex education before they goes out to meet other people outside. These however are the basic thing parents should do to their children. The school which   is an organ of disseminating knowledge fail in its

measure to prove the child with what is required. The schools are supposed to introduce   sex education and the problems associated with pre-marital sexual acts. These will help the students with lengthy information about sexual relationship, rather than allowing the students going blindly into this practices which the resultant effect is always detrimental to the student, his parents and the society at large.

Every year, there are cases of school drop outs in secondary schools in Ebonyi State due to some problems associated with pre-marital sex, such like pre-marital/ unwanted pregnancies, Transmission of veneral diseases, child abuse and Neglect, Abortion problems etc. This incidence   has become so high in the recent years that parents, teachers and the government have shown concern why students should engage in sexual actions before marriage.

This makes the victims to bring disgrace to his family and the public in general. The student, hence tend to hide himself because of the misunderstanding at home with the parents and his peer-group. Hence, this period suppose to be seen as a problem period. This period is expected to be a stage in one’s life, and must not be overloaded by the parents, relation, teachers and educational planners, it is their duty to assist them pass through this period successful, letting them know the implications involved in their sexual acts on time.

1.4  SIGNIFICANCE  OF THE STUDY

The findings of this study will help the parents, teachers, educational planners, communities and even the students themselves fight against this social ill, because the trend towards pre-marital experiences and problems are proceedingly with extra-ordinary rapidity. It will be no small interest to see how long the cultural ideas of virgin marriage will survive as a moral code after its observations has passed into judgment. The causes of pre-marital sex experiences are attributed to societal values by the students themselves

In addition to this, young   girls  frequently  have  little  knowledge  of , or access to family planning information and fertility management service, this contributes to the continuing high maternal and infant mortality and mobility. Therefore, with the findings of these studies, it will help the secondary school students with factual information towards problems associated with pre-marital.
