PROJECT TOPIC- PROBLEMS OF TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BUSINESS EDUCATION IN THE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING IN EBONYI STATE

Abstract

This research work was designed to examine the problems of teaching and learning of Business education in the institutions of higher learning in Ebonyi State.Four research questions were formulated to guide the study. The researcher adopted a descriptive survey research design in carrying out this study. The population of the study comprised of 600 lecturers and students in the selected tertiary institutions in Ebonyi State. The sample consists of 342 respondents. A simple random sampling technique was used to draw the sample for the study. A researcher structured questionnaire was used to collect data which was validated by three experts; two from Business Education Department and one from Science Education Department all in Ebonyi State University. Statistical mean (X) was used to analyze the data collected. Findings among other things revealed that; inadequate instructional materials affect the teaching and learning of Business Education in tertiary institutions of Ebonyi State, inadequate manpower constitute problems for effective teaching and learning Business Education in tertiary institutions, lack of motivation affect teaching and learning of Business Education in tertiary institutions of Ebonyi State and that poor funding militates against effective teaching and learning of Business Studies.  From the findings the reader recommended that; Government should assist institution of higher learning through provision of effective and adequate instructional materials for teaching and learning. Governing council should recruit qualified specialists as a manpower needed for improving the educational sectors, teachers should be motivated through the provision of their human needs and Government should increase the educational budget and effectively fund secondary schools in the State. Finally, conclusion and suggestions for further studies were drawn.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Business Education can be described as that broad area of knowledge which deals with an enterprise system which identifies and explains the role of business institutions generally and which provides contents and experiences that prepare an individual for effective participation as a citizen and consumer in the society.  Moreover, Business Education is an integral part of the general education of every individual because it contents aid in developing an understanding of business as an institution in a social process and of the role of business in the economy.

For its importance also in 1970, the federal government directed all Tertiary Institutions to give opportunity to students who aspire to choose a career in business education.   Unfortunately, inspite of the good intention of introducing business education into the general education system in our tertiary institutions, the purely utilitarian approach to its teaching has exited the criticism sometimes made that business education has failed to give its highly practical nature of the training.

Nevertheless, it is believed that if it is properly organized and taught then the question as to its educational value will be forgotten for according to Robbins committee (1963) what is taught should be taught in such a way. Here lies the problem. Business education lacks proper and effective teaching and learning which has provoked the interest of the researcher to find out factor which militate against the teaching and learning, business education in institution of higher learning.

Statement of the Problem

Teaching and learning is an art which depends on many factors. It is however faced with a number of problems which tend to reduce its effectiveness especially in the field of business education.

Recently in Nigeria on the level of performance in the field of business education, many were of the view that the level of education has fallen. This view then stimulated a concern in the research, hence trying to find out the solution to those factors which militate against the teaching and learning of business education in the institutions of high learning.

Teaching and learning therefore can be a powerful instrument in bringing about a revolution in a qualitative and standard of education in Nigeria. A qualitative and standard of educationcannot be actualized unless funds are available for maintenance and procurement of equipment and necessary inputs.

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study is to ascertain the problems of teaching and learning of business education in the institutions of higher learning in Ebonyi State specifically the study sought to:

  1. To determine how the students’ attitude affects the learning of business education in the institutions of higher learning in Ebonyi State.
  2. To ascertain the students’ related factors that militates against teaching business education in the institution of higher learning.

iii.      To find out how adequate the instructional materials are in teaching and learning business education in tertiary institutions of Ebonyi State.

  1. Ascertain the teacher related factors that affect teaching business education in tertiary institutions of Ebonyi State.
  2. To determine to what extent incentives militates against the teaching and learning of business education in institutions of higher learning in Ebonyi State.

Significance of the Study

Business education as a course is faced with many problems in the institutions of higher learning. This research project is a deliberate attempt aimed at identifying those problems affecting the teaching and learning of the course and also trying to suggest feasible solutions to them.

Since the development plan of most Nigeria leaders is to have qualitative education in the country with the common believe that this will go a long way to find a lasting solution to the problems militating against effective teaching and learning of business education in tertiary institutions but the standard of education in Nigeria continued to reduce its value.

This nation moving for standard and qualitative education can be actualized without the development of teaching and learning of business education in Nigeria. Further research prompted the researcher to honestly suggested that future development in teaching and learning of business education must address the basic issues of creating linkage within the Nigeria system of education.

Research Questions

The following questions were raised to guide the researcher.

  1. How does the students’ attitude affects the learning of business education in the institutions of higher learning?
  2. What are the students’ related factors that militate against teaching and learning of business education in the institution of higher learning?

iii.      How adequate are the instructional materials used in teaching and learning of business education in tertiary institutions?

  1. What are the teacher’s related factors that affect the teaching of business education in tertiary institutions?
  2. To determine to what extent do incentives militate against teaching of business education in institutions of higher learning?

Scope of the Study

This study was geared towards investigating the factors militating against the teaching and learning of business education in the institutions of higher learning. There are three institutions of higher learning that teach business education in Ebonyi State. They are;

  1. Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.
  2. Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo.
  • Akani Ibiam Polytechnic Uwana.

The researcher covered two (2) institutions of higher learning. This student as you know is to cover two institution of higher learning. This study as you know is to cover two (2) institutions of haggier learning that teach business education.

Limitation of the Study

The limitation of the study was that the research was not easy because of the obvious reason:

  1. i) Some of the lecturers were not cooperative.
  2. ii) Some of the students also were not cooperative they could not understand the importance of the study.

iii)     Time factor was equally one of the major problems.

  1. iv) Cost of transportation also affected the research work.

Though the research was not easy, some lecturers and students were not cooperative. They misunderstood the importance of the study. Time factor, cost of transportation and the bureaucratic nature of the schools also affected this research.
