ABSTRACT

The research which is aimed at a careful and systematic study of the recruitment and initiation processes among cult group in Nigerian tertiary institutions has Ebonyi University, Abakaliki as its study area. The study focus on selected cult groups operating in Ebonyi State University. Survey research method was adopted in the course of the study and a well drafted questionnaire of its (sample size) were distributed to respondents. Data generated from the field were objectively processed and analysed using simple percentage tables. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made- Parents should be discipline, because, indiscipline on the part of parents has given room for children’s lanolessnes and which must definitely affect their affluence side. Also, the federal government in conjunction with school authorities should set up an agency in the school to investigate the activities of the students such that any one caught or reported should face the music. Finally, school authorities i.e. management both at the upper levels and lower levels, should be accommodating and human when they handle issues concerning students.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • THE BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

According to Ornadaio (2002: 2), the very first manifestation of the confraternity tradition in Nigerian Campuses occurred in 1952 when Prof. Wole Soyinka and Six other students formed the Pirates confraternity at the University of Ibandan. It was, according to Dr. Tanyi Tuli, one time National Capon “because of some social ills and conformist degradation which were exhibited not only by the students, but by the society at large, he also noted that the organization at that time, had idea that were “humanistic”.

Between 1952 and 1997, there have occurred abnormal genetic mutation, which brought into existence a plethora of secret organizations. Most of them have little or no similarities in ideas with the original concept developed by the seven in 1952. Egwu, (2004: 9) noted that the very first mutation occurred in the mid 70s when a member of the pirates, which until then, was still the only confraternity in existence was black spotted’ or expelled from the organization.

One of the aggrieved members, who was later to become a provost on one of the nation’s colleges of education, decided in protest to form a parallel fraternity, which he dubbed the “Buccaneers”. The Buccaneers have been close to the pirates in terms of original ideals except that it had to cope with serious credibility problems that gave rise to complex and a need for constant self-assertion, the Buccaneers were also to be known as the National Association of Sea-Lords, which was an answer to pirated National Association of Seadogs (Igodo, 2002:3).

Kanter (2004:4). Observed that after much struggle for power it now broke into further confraternity groups which included: Black Axe, Vikings, Red Beret, and Double (i.e. 2, 2) etc. As the groups continue to split, they lost their vision and their activities degenerated to unnecessary Carnage in our higher institutions.

In this study, attention will be focused on the some selected confraternity groups in Ebonyi State University such as Black Axe, Vikings, Double (2, 2).

In the main research, attempts will be made to examine the recruitment and initiation processes among the aforementioned cultist groups in Ebonyi State University.
