INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Education is considered as the most veritable tool for nation building. It equips an individual with the skills necessary for being useful to himself in particular and his community in general. Considering this great importance, there is therefore the need for the optimum utilization of available  instructional materials in teaching and learning (Especially English Language in our Secondary Schools.

Instructional materials can be said to be all physical devices whether ready-made aid and facilitate, classroom teaching and learning. To ensure that this learning process is effective and efficient there is therefore the need for availability and utilization of the instructional materials needed. Availability and utilization of instructional material may be defined as the extent of provision and the rate of optimization of instructional materials.

Through efforts have be the teachers and provides of education on the possible ways of the available instructional, there has been a statistical indication  that students have not performed well in their examinations especially in English language perhaps due to unavailability and under utilization of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of English Language.

Nonetheless that the availability and utilization of instructional materials are students gain oriented, but it will also give indication as to the need or other wise of more materials in the school. More 80, its assessment could be extended to the personal especially teachers in order to determine the extent to which the teaching force is utilized. However, this situation varies according of size and type of school upon the background, the researchers saw the expedience to embark on  this study.

Statement of the problem

The importance of instructional materials has been identified as indispensable in the teaching and learning of English language in Secondary Schools. Irrespective of this invaluable importance, the availability and utilization of these instructional materials have posed great challenge to the realization of the objectives of teaching and learning of English language in Secondary Schools.

This situation has provided led to the poor performances of students in English language. At best only  limited number of students attain the academically expected goals set for English Language. Some studies carried out by (Obi, 1996, Uwazuruike, 1998) revealed that the poor performances of students in examinations especially English language was because of the inabilities of the teachers to handle the complex nature of English language therefore making English language lessons become uninteresting, boring, abstract and very complex to learn.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study include the following:

  1. To identify the instructional materials available for the teaching and learning of English language in Secondary Schools.
  2. To determine the extend of utilization of the instructional materials used in teaching and learning of English in Secondary Schools.

iii.       To suggest possible remedies for the improvement of teaching and learning of English language in Secondary Schools.

Significance of the Study

This study significant a number of ways. It is well help the Ministry of Education in the provision of instructional materials so as to bring about a conducive teaching and learning environment for both the teachers and the students, as this will bring his productivity and performance. And for the students it will bring about better understanding of the subject English language.

The finding of this study will help the Secondary School Management Board to be able to measure the extent of effectiveness of inputs by teachers and output by students. This relationships  would enable for appropriate measures to betaken in order to remove the imbalance, if any. It will also offer a ray of hope to Secondary School teacher since such recommendation when implemented will likely assure that a

better teaching and learning relationship exists between teachers and students rather than seeing the teaching and learning of English language as frustrating and hazardous. Moreover, it will equip the classroom teachers with vital teaching aids needed in solving problems associated will the teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools.

Scope of the Study

The scope of this study will therefore border on the following.

  1. The extent of availability of instructional materials.
  2. The utilization rate of the instructional materials.
  • The relevance of instructional materials.

The study also limited itself to some selected Secondary Schools in Owerri Municipal Council. They included Ikenegbu girls secondary school, urban Development Secondary School etc. This study also covered both visual and audio visual instructional materials used in the teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools.

Research Question

The following research question guided the study, they included.

  1. What instructional materials are available in teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools?
  2. What is the extent of utilization of the available instructional materials in the teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools?
  3. What are the remedies for the improvement of teaching and learning of English Language in Secondary Schools?
