CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY.

According to Oxford Advance learners, Dictionary 7th edition looked at women as adult female human being not experienced about the society, one not young and innocent. Woman is said to be a suitable helpmate created out of a man to assist him in life endeavors. So we can say that a women has a divine task to carried out. In the content of this project, we will accept that for a nation to successively develop, the role of -women is as important as the role of men in making the objectives of development real.

From women have been generally identified to constitute the life of nation building across the country, women have created innovative, comprehensive programmes to meet their communities at large. Nigeria women are not out of this development effort. In Ebonyi local government where we took as our case study, women have contributed a lot in the development economically, socially and politically. In the agricultural sector, they contributed immensely. They equally form the majority of voters in electoral distract.

However, according to Muoneke (2000) women are quintessential and Ebonyi women are future mothers resilient, resourceful workers and patient. The hand that nutures from the state of obscurity and nothingness, armed with touch of tradition, customs, societal norms and values. Women have struggled, reverend, and today emerging from the shadow of societal shares to demonstrate. That they are the owners of destiny, as seen by their numerous achievements so far as contributing their quota toward building a state or Nation.

In the geographical region of Nigeria precisely Ebonyi Local Government, the women are energetic hard workers. A typical Ebonyi woman is the breadwinner of a family of about six to ten children where the men are not earning a living. They feed, clothe and survive. She goes to farm, rice mill, whenever the jobs are to labor every day of her life. With the little she earns, she struggles to pay the school fees of her children and provide other needs,, and with theses building up the nation for a better tomorrow.

Notwithstanding, Ebonyi women are labourers but nurse, academicians women with qualities to affect their society. We have potential lawyers and Doctors. Women like Hon/Barr. Elizabelth Ogbaga, who has been in National Assembly and Dr. Adaeze Nwuzor who is promoting and dominating, degrading and dehumanizing dilemma of daughters of Ebonyi in Ebonyi state is a celebrated case. We equally have Elders Mrs. Ugoeze Marcellina Uburu (JP) being the first lady to be educated in her days, she shaded more light to women by enlightening them.

She was a mirror and the women saw her as the symbol infect, no amount of lobbying changed their mind, what against early marriage of girls and rather went further to admonish the parents of the female counterparts to send their female children to school, and enumerated to them the inherent rewards so we will definitely understand that women have greatly contributed to the national development so, let’s support women and give them equal opportunity with men for what a man can do women can even do better.

In the older days women are seen as weaker vessels in all per practices, socially, physically, politically, economically and otherwise, we can say that some tradition are somehow responsible for the non-participation of women in national development. Society has clearly defined roles of men and women. Those roles are important for the existence of human kind. No sex should use the role of the other or lord it over the other through customs and tradition, though primitive understanding have wrongly led women to believe that they can only be seen and not heard, they fact remains that both sexes are complementary to each other for growth of mankind and to the development of society.

In any society, the first role defined dictated foe a woman is that of a wife. This encompasses the task of domestic work and childcare. These roles do not only set barriers against women’s participation but also affects their advancement in political activities. In view of traditional roles of women, some women are educated narrowly thereby not developing their potentials to prepare them for works as housewives and mothers. Coming to Ebonyi, women in the olden days they feels Inferior to even come out in a social gathering, they feel that they not are important.

Moreover, it is in male and female pairs that God created ail things, the role of women in national development is over whelming numerous,, but the problem is that their efforts in the development process are not regarded. Therefore, this is the basic upon which the researcher has decided to venture in to this subject, in other to find out those factors that militate against the effective participation of women in national development.
