ABSTRACT

Nigeria women do not seems to participate actively in matters of nation building, this study was therefore embarked upon to find out the factors that are responsible and to ascertain it education plays a position or negative role in this matter, how far has the principle of equality been observed in involving women in all aspect of our national life political, economically and socially. Questionnaire was used to collect data and the population comprised all workers in six different establishment in Ebonyi state excluding  such low workers as security men, messenger, labourers, cook etc. the institution are Banks, schools, Hospitals, Courts Insurance companies and Agricultural  establishment. A total of 200 workers make up sample. The data collected were analyzed using percentage and means the highlight of the study was that women aspire to take up national post only that the society right from time turn to be based against them, having perceived them as a weaker sex whose roles should center in child bearing and other household jobs, that education has positive impact on women in their performance of their job but most of them turn to study more of arts because right from childhood they were meant to understand that the science are male domain subject, the denial of equal access to job position with their male counterparts lower women’s moral to put in their best toward nation building. Base on the above findings the following recommendation was made that the education of women should be given more attention by the federal government. The tradition of the society, which limited the role performed by women, should be described and that equal opportunity should be given to women with their male counterparts so that each person contributed his/her quota towards the realization of our nation goal and objective.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

All over the world the role of women in national development is determine by the socio-cultural environment of such society. Perception of women determines their status and place as well as the extent of their participation in national building. In the traditional African society, the place of the women. Was in the kitchen. But traditionally, conception of women was a tool of baby factory.

Therefore, their contribution to national development ends only at child bearing, services at home and in the farm, having been so perceived women were relegated to the background and stereotyped in certain role women welfare are naturally lazy and not self supporting and they were not made to enter the work force most of them are channeled into lowpaying, temporary job, eg typists or sale, clarks, unless the

women is sufficiently well educated and affluent to exclusive work like medicine and law. This attitude is ever drummed into the younger one’s such that, when ask to describe their days of domestic life almost entirely, and girls gives explicit accounts of house wife routines that centered on their husband and children and in choosing careers. They “girl” tend to base it on the usefulness to home and family life.

But there is nothing as dynamic as change, the society in which we live changes and so does everything in it whether living or non living, they were born to grow, mature and die being replaced by a new finding. In Nigeria as elsewhere in African, society has traditionally placed in a high premium on the birth of male children.

The preference for male children lingers  in Nigeria even among the highly educated middle class families. At the present stage of our development. The Nigeria women has gone beyond the stage of agitating generally for liberation or equal rights with her male counterparts, Nigeria has for long, certainly since 2003 accepted obligation to accord women the same as accorded to men he all space of life, particularly in all the areas covered by the convention.

The 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria which  is the  current constitution of Nigeria, that contains chapters on which a chapter contains fundamental human right and freedom citizenry as stated at chapter 4 sub- section 33Vs 46 of the constitution. That stated the equal right of men and women as freedom of the land, all expects of our national life politics, economic and socially.

Even qualitative and guantitative progress is included in national building of a country, Therefore in this work it stated that for a nation to develop, the individual within the environment that make up the nation should put in their potentials to act on their social culture economic and political environment. And in the process of transforming their society they also transform themselves to contribute to national

building more effective and efficient is it’s one’s role. But we can found out that in these rights are good than the paper in which it were started, despite constitution amendment but still equal right for women. Based upon traditional norms and values still prevail. Such a state of affairs has persisted for so long and been so universal that deeply rooted socialization patterns has resulted of life and the set of

attitude which build their character. The most recorded  history remains dominant today. The Gux of particular believe in male superiority and female inferiority. Acceptance of this distinct between men and women explains the sex-based division of labour characteristic of all patriarchal societies male authority over female was legitimized from biological culture, religion and economic perspective.

The strength of the economic women as considered adequate for gardening, but female been properly man. According to Engus mother, right was over thrown and men took command at home, the women at home was degraded and reduced from the power and became the slave of her  husband and a more instrument for the production of children.

Therefore, the discussion of women position is not only a national affairs but has even gone international affair. The commission on the status of women had been the catalyst for the 1967 U.N. General Assembles adopted of a declaration on the elimination of all form of discrimination against women is incompatible with human dignity.

The declaration laid down the philosophical criteria by which nation could more from their prevailing stage of systematic sexual discrimination to one equal right. The study will therefore look at national building from the economic social and political perspective and examine the role Educated plays in equipping women for building.

The recently company on women education initiated by the federal ministry of education and the programme on women in Nigeria (WN) is a testimony to the relevance of women education in national building with the recognition of women as vital role which education plays as a foundation for proper building of a girl into useful women-hood it is necessary to properly equip her with good education.
