THE ROLES OF MOTIVATION ON STUDENT’S COMPREHENSION OF GOVERNMENT: A CASE STUDY O F IZZI LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF  EBONYI STATE

Abstract

This project is a product of research work on the role of motivation on students comprehension of government. Data collected were analysed with mean and frequencies. The data collected were used to answer six questions/mean and frequencies of the study. And the result revealed  the impact of motivation  on students performances in Government. The project is made of five chapters and the contents includes  chapter one which allowed for the background to the study, statement of problem, significance of the study, research question/man and frequencies, scope/delimitation of the study and operational definition. Chapter two allowed for review of literature, chapter three allowed for research methodology, chapter four allowed for data presentation and analysis, while chapter five allowed for summary, conclusion and recommendation.

 

          CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

          1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Motivation seems to be factor required in the realization of objective in education. Adequate and effective use of motivation may go a long in increasing students performances in government. Motivation can be conceptualized as students, energy   and drive to learn work effectively and achieve to their potentials at school and the behaviour from this energy an drive (Atkinson, 1990).

According to Ereke (2005), motivation plays a large part in students’ interest and enjoyment in school and study. First of all, one might ask what is motivation, what is government and who is a student.          Kirk Patrick (1983) defined motivation as that  which causes a person to act or do something, because he wants his objectives to be achieved.

Motivation according to Olabaji (1985) is that which provides the desire for an individual to lean. It is a factor which makes, inspires and promotes learning, those factors includes: Cultural factor if the law of the country insisted that no child should drop-out from school, all parents will ensure that their children are being motivated so that they can go to school when the law of the land pay much attention on government order than any other subject. Ekerao et al (1989) defines motivation as the process involves in arousing directing and sustaining a behaviour. Use of instructional materials, for effective students comprehension of government the teacher have to make use of materials such a chalkboard, textbooks, these will motivate students an make them to understand government more than any other subject.

         Guidance and counseling for effective leaning to take place in government students need guide and advice on the relevance of government.         Organization of quiz competition in secondary schools also can help students’ comprehension of government since each and everyone of them struggles for prize. Motivation underpins students achievement a child should be rewarded for the work well done, if a child does something correctly, that is a teacher should do something to satisfy a student for the job well done. Government according to Nwankwo (2002) can be defined under three approaches that is government as an institution of the state, government as an academic field of study and government as a process of governing.

The first approach defines government as the institution of the state. By this it means a body of person and institution or agency that makes and enforces law in a given state, while the word institution in the definition refers to organ of government which are legislature executive and judiciary, it is the legislature, executive and judiciary interpret the law, it is the harmonious relationship among these arms of government and the people in them that makes government the institution of the state.The second approach sees government as an academic field of study called Political Science while the third approach defines government as a process or act of government, it means the process or act of governing. It means the process of administering and implementing laid down rules and regulations in a department minister or company.

        According to Kirk (1983), a student is the one who enrolled for a course of instruction, main looking to our government students among others which tell you that there is poor performance of students in government due to lack of adequate motivation. Students complaints about a teacher because such a teacher do not bring words that can move them to action (Agwu, 2004). Even in the church the congregation pay attention to pastor who is able to motivate their minds to listen even when they are uninterested to sermon. A child listens to her mother because her mother motivates him/her to do certain things. Lack of motivation has created a big hole in students’ performance in government.

        Students paying attention matters a lot in understanding government. Motivation searches the need and thereby proffers an atmosphere conducive enough for the listener (Onyeneje, 2004). Driving this argument home, a mere teacher in primary school can teach but not all can create impact their students, therefore ugly performance of students in government, the quickest way to motivating students, how to get appropriate feed back from students to teaches, the best strategies to employ to enhance effective students comprehensive of government, inadequate publicity to the programme are being taken care of in this work.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

    From the series of research carried out, there is indication that there is poor performance of students in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Few students who inspire to read government in the aforementioned secondary schools encounter many problems.Therefore lack of government and public patronage to the study cum instructional materials. Shortage of relevant government textbooks and curriculum content which are quickest way of motivating students. Inadequate publicity to the programme and appropriate feed back from students.  There is high level of difficulty in attending to this problem. All these degenerate to  students poor performance in government.This lingering problems prompted the researcher to  this study believing hat at the  end of the study it will proffer solutions to them.
