CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Health is something of an enigma. “You look well” stands as a common greeting to a friend or a relative who appears relaxed, happy and feeling good: reflecting on term, however, immediately reveals its complexity. The idea of health is capable of wide and narrow applications. The world health organization (1948) defined health as state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

In other words, one can be free from disease or infirmity and yet be unhealthy. This indicates that health operates in three dimensions of human make up, namely, physical, mental or emotion and social. According to Bethworth (1982), health is human effectiveness; the qualifying factor for living. Thus implies that health is a necessary factor or ingredient, which provides the ability for one to carry out his or her daily tasks satisfactorily, such as a accomplishing among other things one’s routine activities in life.

Akubue  (2000), stated that health is the back bone of all human activities and source of all achievements. Without good health life becomes meaningless, unproductive drab, painful and a source of anxiety just as we promote a business to make it grow and prosper, so also do we need to promote our health. From the above definitions, health is viewed as a necessity that influences or determines one’s success in his entire endeavour.

During the transition from childhood ro adulthood, adolescents establish patterns of bahaviour and make lifestyle choices that may affect both their current and future health. Oxford Advanced learners  Dictionary  (2000) defined problem as something that is difficult to deal with or to understand. This shows that problem is an unsettle matter demanding solution or decision and requiring considerable though or skill for its proper execution.

Okafor (1999) noted that health problems of some groups of people are often acute and disabling. Consequently, recoveries and prompt though others turn to be pseudo-problem when viewed from different perspective. He also stated that health problem’s and needs are common to both males and females but appear with different emphasis in different people. As a result, he explained that people such as secondary school students face difficulties and health problems in school.

According to Johnson (2003) health problems impair physical, social and mental development of an individual, and that nobody can live effectively or efficiently unless he has a well functioning body. The above author noted that health problem deprive a person of the capacity for successfully solving the problems which cries through life. According to editorial of Nursing care (2003), health problem is a condition which prevents individuals from mobilizing their physical, social and mental resources for optional living.

Thus, any condition which prevents individuals from attaining maximum daily task would constitute a health problem, because it could not permits them to mobilize their physical, social and mental resources for optimal living. Boys and girls are confronted with numerous adjustment problems that are peculiar to their age group owing to the demand of parents, school and society at large.

A number of social and emotional problems ranging from health and physical development to courtship, sex and marriage as well as personal, psychological relations, home and faily, religion, future vocation, educational aspirations have been identified among those factors affecting the adolescents at the secondary school level. Omoegun, 1995, Reagan and Brookins-Fisher, 1997). There are many secondary schools in Ikwo South East development centre of Ebonyi state, both public and private schools.
