CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

In Nigeria there has been a general public protest about undesirable behavior in the society and schools undesirable behaviour at this moment is a damage to the entire educational system. It manifest itself in different forms but the type that engages our attention is undesirable behaviour among students in secondary schools. Undesirable behaviour is at a higher tension in secondary school. The tendency is for everyone, this made blames on the school teachers.

According to Kazu (2007) undesirable behaviour in classroom are classified in terms of their result as dedimental to academic activities, social relationships, physical equipment and environment management should therefore, considered that undesirable behaviour of students in classroom affects both the result is dete to the social relationships, physical equipment environmental etc. thus, there is a need for proper guardian by the management towards the students.

(Ozturk and Celik, 2002) coping the undesirable students behaviour in the classroom is one of the essential requirement for creating on effective teaching and learning environment. A good management of classroom depends on the positive communication and interaction to be built by the teacher with the students. Undesirable behaviour are one of the most important problems of teachers (ran 2000).

It is the responsibility of the teacher to find new strategies for solving these problems (Kellametal, 1994). Research demonstrated the student with undesirable behaviour continue these behaviour in various forms from the first grade to the end of secondary school (Sutherland, 2000). Students with problematic behaviour act detrimentally to the teacher’s authority and the order of the classroom when they feel angry, board or aggressive (Long and Morse, 1996).

The teacher must use different methods for students against this kind of behaviour (Acker et al, 1996). The prevention of problematic behaviour is related to discipline. Effective discipline methods are very important in achieving academic success and safe learning environment (Luisell et al, 2005) problematic behaviour may occur throughout the life. The important thing is that both the parent and the school know how to solve these problematic behaviour.

Ensuring discipline in school is one of the most important problems of educators. Because of complicated social relationships, it may be said that parent also focus on this issue. Undesirable behaviour is one of the topics of complaints of everyone no matter they have children at school or not. Classroom is a social structure several problems may occur and lots of character exist under the effect of these negative stimuli.

These problems may lead to unfavourable results in terms of both teachers and students. In order to cope with these behaviour, it is necessary to search for the required problem solving behaviour of students. Students with undesirable behaviour needs to know what exactly is expected from them and be frequently reminded of these expectation (Nelson et al, 1998) these students are believed that they may reduce possible problems which they may have when they are trained and find this training attractive.

Classroom management involves not only finding effective solution when problems occurs but also preventing frequently viewed problems before they emerge. In order to make the most effective decision in classroom management, the teacher should clearly determine his/her goals and the desired target, and make his/her decision depending on them. The most important part of determining a strategy is the quality of the negative behaviours, (Ozturk, 2000) choices of strategies against undesirable behaviour diff according to the type of the act, its severity how it influences others, it objectives and possible results (Basar, 2003).

Strategies to be used against undesirable behaviour may be applied through various behvaiours or manners (Celph, 2004; Turnuklu and Tildiz, 2002). The following strategies may be applied for the purpose of displacing undesirable students behaviour with desirable ones and correcting them understanding the problem, ignoring, warning, making changes during the lesions, giving responsibilities, talking to the student, communicating with the school management, communicating with parents and punishing (Basar, 2003).

Baloglu (2001) makes a list of methods applied by teachers against undesirable behaviour, ignoring trival mistakes, eye contact, approaching, warning, reprimanding, changing seat, making a wise crack, making a break, talking, making deprived of rights and privileges, detention, refusing request, communicating to parents, making an agreement, non-physical punishment. It is quite hard to say that these strategies upon several studies will have similar results in all students. Thus, new strategies should be searched as the student group studied changes.

Traynor (2002) and Saritas (2006) stated that teacher uses compelling, free, job oriented, authoritarian and essential strategies against undesirable behaviour. Farmer et al (2006) propose that teachers use several methods in preceding undesirable behaviour in the classroom or extinguishing this kind of behaviour. These are time out, corporal punishment, proximity control, directing at group level and individual direction.

Every teacher has to deal with students who display undesirable behaviour in the classroom. These behaviour can range from students who engage in relatively behaviour such as chewing gum talking with their friends or acting rowdy to truly negative behaviour such as bellying other students. Principles from psychology can be used to provide teacher with several options for how to reduce.

These undesirable behaviour and many of these techniques come from the behaviour perspective, some basic solutions has been applied by the teacher but severally it failure the time out techniques punishes negative behaviour by removing an unruly student attention or even by smiling and joining in this removed subtract that peer reward while also adding the isolation as a punishment such as spanking or using of come to slap a child’s hand, over half of Nigeria has stopped corporal punishment.

It is consider overly harsh, and physically dangerous and not effective instead of punishing undesirable behaviour teachers decided to actually techniques surprises children by allowing them feel less interest and they felt they have arrive in the society or classroom environment. Psychologically, emotional and cognitive development of students at secondary school age is important in both social and individual terms. It is believed that it is significant to determine what kind of undesirable behaviour the students at that age have. It is known that undesirable behaviour which starts at this age influence all students educational life.
