CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

Background to the Study

Science according to Mogbo (2004) is defined as organized knowledge gathered through many years of careful observation and experimentations. Mogbo’s definition entails that science is the study which deals with creativity and resourcefulness. The process of teaching and learning of biology as one of the branches of science sounds incompletes when standard laboratory is absent.

According to Igwe (2003) scientific knowledge cannot be acquired without well-equipped laboratory. Therefore, there is great need to plan and design standard biology laboratories in secondary schools found in the metropolis of Ebonyi local government Area, so as to ensure effective biology education.

According to Maduabum (2006) science (biology) constituents the bedrock of National and prosperity still the same source, science in its broadest sense refers to all human activities which involves organized knowledge of natural phenomena from Mogbo (2004) it simple implies that, science is the systematic study of nature with the purpose of accumulating an organized body of matter, their interaction and outcomes by Njoku (2004).

According to Omiko (2001) sees science as the way of facts and theories of the nature, according to Omiko this knowledge of facts and theories promote attitudes of reality, curiosity objectivity, self-examinations and search of truth, when standard biology laboratories are made to be available in Ebonyi local government secondary schools there will be clarity in biological science. In the word of Taylor (2007) one of the basic derives is striving to understand which the mother of discovery. Discovery according to Perutz (2007) and a noble prize winner and a biochemist is like falling in love and reaching the climax of mountain after a hand climb. This world of max motivated Stratman and Ewulukwa (2005) to cite.

Thus: Science provides ideas and devices to improve the quality of life, Ewuleukwa (2005) define biology as a science subject that deals with life. As it was derived from two Latin words: (“bios which mean life” and “logy which simply means to study” the vitality principles in the words of Taylor (2007) states life is something very unique. The reason forms the objective of researching into the strategies of planning and designing standard laboratory for biology education. Discovery and the mother of science will be over looked.

Taylor and stout (2007) emphasized that biology is rooted in human spirit as the ultimate study of human life and the existences of every living organisms in an ecosystem, and this form the basic reason people nature and build houses, plants, domestic animals. This scientific extension of this human tendency is called biology. Because of the great importance attached to biology as production of vaccine, organs transplanting, improvement of lives, controlling pests to mention but few, Stratman (2004) maintained that biology should be based greatly on experimentation and observation rather than theoretical work and its knowledge and skill enhance economic and industrial progress and also has increasing influence on social changes seen in every day life in the study of biology through the use of standard laboratory equipment while teaching.

School science laboratory according to Eze (2006) is a room or space equipped with chemicals, apparatus and other materials for teaching science especially biology practicals. It can as well be defined as a facility for learning the scientific way of finding out, employing our senses and mind to generate knowledge. It is teaching device primarily for the purpose of bring students in direct content with things and their reflect scientific thinking. According to Ekereke (2004) biology because it affords students opportunity of ensuring and investigation of processes. Ekereke maintained that the purpose of the laboratory are to involve the learn in the use of logical procedures and strategies to demonstrate the implications of scientific theories and laws for provision of experience asking Good questions, the nature provision of practiced in reorganizing regularities, commonalities and diversities among laboratory is to help students in cognitive order of data, psychomotor and affective acumen. He concluded by stating that, active participation of students in laboratory activities foster their minds to the understanding of science and wisdom of biological concepts.

In biological students, the federal republic of Nigeria (2008) regards the need of science especially biology to be activity centered but no attempt has been made in Ebonyi local government area to practicalzed biology education through laboratory exercises Bute (2009) Kempa (2008) have shown in their studies that regular laboratory exercises helps to develop a good range of skills in student and laboratory activities enable students to develop education domains for accurate planning Ozor (2005) defined planning as the fore thought exercise in an attempt to select the best polices to be implemented over a medium or long term period for the development of nation, the felt need for infrastructural facilities to be available in schools of insufficient quality and quality for effective development to occur, it become the responsibilities of authorities which have been given necessary incentive and directive to develop school to plan adequately for the provision of such equipment and facilities.

Planning and designing enhance on the proper arrangement carried out on a specific area of disciplines, which also has to do with the different patterns, founds to ensure the effectiveness nets of the use apparatus in the field of study, as regard to well use of standard biology laboratory in the schools that offers science, and the need for strategies for planning and Designing standard laboratory in schools. Therefore, the needs for strategies for planning and designing standard laboratories in the school is that, it motivate the interests of the students to have more zeal while studying the course of science, it also enables teachers or tutors to be able to perform difference experiment to the student in the lab and also clear student in some areas where they are confused, meanwhile teacher also clear/ disclose to the students the do and the done of the laboratory as referred to the precautions of the laboratories.

However, the Design of the biology laboratory by the structure of discipline if serves. According to Ozor (2005) designing is the execution of planned work maintaining its content to ensure accuracy and efficiency. Therefore planner, should table decision on what specific projects that should be undertaken, during biology laboratory designing carefulness should be counted first followed by adequate supply of needed materials.

 Statement of the Problem

Despite the researchers that have been carried out on the planning and designing of standard biology laboratories for effective biological studies by expert like Ozor (2005) Ausbel (2008) Bate (2008) Kempa (2009) secondary school in Ebonyi Local Government Area still face great tribulations in biological studies.

Like Osei Yaw Abebio on his (third Edition) on the separation techniques which he gives evidence on the separating funnel method of (petrol and water) at this case the mixture of petrol and water do not mix together to form a single liquid instead, they separate out into two distinct layers when they are added together, to separate the two layer a separating funnel is used the lower denser liquid layer is tapped off, leaving the upper less denser liquid layer in funnel. This has immensely contributed to the poor performance of students in the study of biology and great failure in biology examination.

Greater number of teachers in Ebonyi Local Government Area is yet to discover the problems that radicate or emanate where there is no standard biology laboratory for effective biology education. This has misled many students to the thought that biological studies are difficult. Hence there is need to find out the strategies for planning and designing standard biology laboratories in Ebonyi Local Government Secondary school for effective biology education.

 

Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of the study is to find out strategies necessary for planning and designing standard’s biology laboratory for effective biological studies in secondary schools of Ebonyi Local Government Area,

 

Specifically the Purpose of the Study

  1. Discover how provision of equipment is a strategy for standard laboratory for effective teaching and learning of biology education.
  2. Identify the how provision of facilities is a strategy planning and designing of standard laboratory for effective teaching and learning of biology education.

iii. Identify how conducive learning environment is a strategy planning and designing of standard laboratory for effective teaching and learning of biology education.

  1. Discover what teacher’s characteristics (efforts) experience and qualification, items of the laboratory science teachers also well trained in the field of sciences that knows the good use of laboratory equipment while performing some experiment or practical to the student in the laboratory and such abides with the different strategies of planning and designing of standard biology education.

 

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will be beneficial to all the science teachers through active participation in expert planning and designing workshops, conference and seminars.

This study will also benefit laboratory attendants technologies projects managers and administrative personnel through supervising exercise assistance in works and regular attendance cum careful observation. Programme managers. Planners and designers will as well benefit from this work. This finding will enable them to known the features of planning and designing in conjunction with what should be the first considering factors during discussion of how to plan and design standard laboratories it will also enable them known that faculty decision leads to faculty plan and design.

Parents will as well benefits from finding of study through parental involvement in support of their children’s education. This study will enable them bring science home so to improve the cultural orientation of the society.

Great benefits i.e purposed on government sector through the realization that better education is achieved through standard laboratories establishment its knowledge and skills enhance economic and industrial progress and also, has increasing influence on social changes seen in everyday life. Therefore, there is a need to build standard biology laboratories in the secondary schools found in Ebonyi local government area.
