Chapter one

Introduction

Background to the Study

Literature has long been studied by many scholars and researchers alike, literature plays very important roles in human life which include cultivating reading culture in students, encouraging creativity, reflective thinking and making proper judgement. However, despite the enviable roles literature plays in our social life it has not become functional in our life because of the inadequate importance accorded to its teaching

in our senior secondary schools. Non application of dramatization ineffective practice in the act of literary composition, outright laziness to read literary works insufficient text books and students hardly use literature text for extra curricular activity, recreation, extensive reading, all these are notable negative factors affecting the teaching of literature through reading in the senior secondary schools in Ezza north

Local Government Area. Many scholars have written about literature through reading which according to Unoh (1982:29). Recreational or extensive reading are necessary for expanding intellectual horizons sharing vicarious experiences, resolving emotional tension or conflicts and developing more mature personality. Literature helps the reader to develop the spirit of creativity and reflect on the knowledge

acquired from it in real life situation, it also helps the readers to develop the ability to discover specific fact make meaning out of unknown words from the contexts, acquire reading habit, respond to opinion expressed by the writer of any work of art especially in prose work. Literature makes the reader think critically especially when reading poem but we find out that, that particular genre is being neglected in

our senior secondary schools. Literature is very unique and effective in opening the mind of it readers and purging it of prejudice or illuminating it for acceptable norms with literature the society is x-rayed human characteristic is explored for the reader or audience to reflect on but unfortunately we find out that little reading is being done in our schools today, students hardly read due to their laziness and poor

attitude towards reading and it is through reading literature texts that students can enhance competent reading in other school subjects. According to the New Webster dictionary of English language it states that: Reading is the act of understanding the meaning of symbols, signs gesture etc by looking at them and assimilating them mentally. This statement is true because it is through reading that teaching of

literature can gain more stand in our senior secondary school and through this the students will be able to read. Other school subjects without stress that is why Enright (1969) on the foregoing stated that: English literature offers a vast reservoir of human experience and a judgement of experience, a development of imagination and entry into situation which otherwise might as well fall outside our keen.

Literature can be described as all printed work or material which gives information instruction, description etc. but this is literature in an ordinary sense or concepts which are not so much concerned about but as a subject it refers to all poems, novels and drama or plays written in verse or prose it is a literary composition which is imaginative, which uses the medium of language to create form, beauty and

meaning. Literature is only vital if the reader or audience reads it. However, this strictly is directed towards the teaching of literature in senior secondary schools through reading. It has been noted that students finds reading of literature or literary works very stressful and difficult and that is having negative effect and causing the declining situation in our education system which is being experienced

recently. In the light of the above, attention would be focused on the possible problems faced by teachers and students in the teaching of literature through reading in senior secondary schools in Ezza North Local government Area of Ebonyi State. The student inability to read their literature text frequently has affected reading of other subjects offered in the school and the ability to read will improve their spoken

English but their inability to read is affecting the comprehension of questions by the students in all the subjects since they are meant to be read, although many Nigerians neglect reading. With a professional boost to the current national policy which makes the teaching of literature in English mandatory in Nigerian schools, reading of the text on literature and all other school subjects might be improved,

teachers should their fore teach reading of literature text and not about literature. According to (Berman 1975) literature textbooks are the composition of grammar and structure of English called reading. Based on the interview personally carried out by the researcher in the teaching of literature through reading in community secondary school Nkomoro and Terry Couphlan Memoria secondary school Ogboji both in

Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, she has witnessed that teacher shy away from teaching the reading aspect of literature reasons being that it is stressful to them and some of them were not well thought in the cause of undergoing their educational programme. A person is condemned to the abyss of failure in academic if he cannot read effectively the right text which he is supposed to read. It is also noticed by the researcher that most of the schools in Ezza North have no library for students and teachers to borrow books.

Statement of the Problem
